Despite Bayern Munich adding Sadio Mane in the summer, minnows Union are among the shock table-toppers of the campaign so far, alongside Napoli and Arsenal, but while those teams have storied histories, Union won their first promotion to the top flight just 3 years ago, and have already beaten Dortmund and Leipzig this season. Seeing that today they won in the 97th minute, it is the setup for an upset. These kind of victories is what defines a magic season. Hopefully they can do it, they don't play as pretty like Bayern, Dortmund or even Frankfurt but they use what they have to the fullest, like Iceland 2016

The secret of Union is simple, back to basics. No fancy counter pressing, no fancy tiki taka or anything. Defend strong and with purpose and counter attack. That's it, and they do it very well.

Totally agree. I remember Fischer getting sacked after winning the double on the basis of "boring play" at the time (1st place for all of the 36 rounds, leader by a record 17 points). I think it shows that he manages his team (emphasise that!) on the basis of their abilities and goes from there with a sense of realism. He once said, why bother and implement a 2nd and 3rd system if you don't get the 1st one right. Some may call that boring but it works out for many years now.

There's no chance that Union will win the Bulli this season, and this is from an Union fan. We've deteriorated since the start of the season, and have struggled to create much up front. Bayern will come back to bite us this season, and Europe has been a dodgy affair too. It's safe to say Union are overachieving by a significant margin as they always do at the start of every season before fixture congestion and injuries hit, as well as the winter window. I believe we sneak into the champions league though and possibly go far in the pokal once again, even in Europe. Our defenders this year have been super smart acquisitions, all of whom are comfortable on the ball and can play a great long ball. Jordan's goals have dropped, but he is a real handful for defenders. This is a team look out for in the future, maybe one day Bayern will be toppled by us.

I think there's an error here, if Union allowed 39 xGA last season and Bayern allowed 40, then Union weren't "behind" Bayern in the metric. Either that or Union's should say 40 and Bayern's 39 if that's the error

I don't know how you English fans see things but in the rest of the world, we have favourites and underdogs. There's no Leicester, no Blackburn in most leagues.

no at the start of rhe season bayern had a big issue with the defence (de ligt not being ready to play on that intensety) but now they got a foodhold back in the league and if you look back in the last years bayern had a rough start in the league because they first concentrate on the ucl

As an American fan, it's been so gratifying to learn about this club and their stadium this year. The Premiership costs a $70/month subscription here. But we get the entire Bundesliga for $5.99/month. I'm honestly not sure why anybody would watch anything else.

If you learn the exact formula, please tell me. But the basic idea is the placement of a shot, the closer to the centre and the goal, the better the xG of the shot. Also factors like if the goalie is positioned close, or how many players are in front of the player during the time of the shot.

I think they'll make it to the champions league this year, however Bayern has started playing so well the last couple of weeks that it's pretty much only a matter of time till Union drop some points somewhere and loses the top spot imo. Bayern doesn't look like they will drop any anytime soon

The only reason Union is first is that Bayern had a bad start. I dont think any team has a Chance in the league against Bayern in the long run of this season. Bayern will probably win again with 6+ more points than 2nd.

No one in union berlin has the quality to play in munich secondary ist just a good run so far. Those team usually crumble in the second half of the season. Seen it way to often, could be mainz, hoffenheim or now berlin. Btw they dont play good football they are kinda atletico Madrid just with less individual quality.

If bayern chairman and dfb work together use bounty hunter approach (Set up certain category of award for teams that have no chance to win the title) and player trading (swapping some of their players to exchange ace players from rival that has no chance to win bundesliga)

You fail to see why Union works. There are no „star players“, no one in our squad is good enough to be of any interest for Bayern. However, our top players are regularly bought by other teams (like Gladbach, Dortmund or Frankfurt) and it still didn’t stop our rise. Look at Kruse, Friedrich or Prömel.

@@hello7032 Well He should have released the video at the time of relevance, now at this moment it's outdated and at this point in time Union Berlin is losing 0-1 to Borussia Monchengladbach at Half Time right now. If they completely lose this match, they could possibly drop to 3rd place behind Dortmund. This is common sense. Btw, after failing to play in Form, Bayern has already got their confidence and form back. Union Berlin may have their chance of Challenging Bayern for the Bundesliga Title, but it won't be easy unless more injuries to Bayern's whole Team.
