Setting aside abramovich's involvement with the Russian government and other (alleged) business malpractices, he really had a passion and involvement with Chelsea that is very difficult to find in owners/chairmans in this age of football as a business. He probably had relationships with the players that made them give that extra push at times, no wonder Chelsea were one of the most successful clubs in Europe during abramovich's tenure. As someone said here as well, the other upper staff members were just as stellar as the players (specially that woman that was chief of operations, can't remember), so that was another big blow in terms of the higher management.

Chelsea's owner has tried to run the club like an NFL / NBA team and it has massively backfired. I don't think he realises that signing players to long contracts in football is such a big gamble that it could cripple a club. The average length of a football contract is 3-5 years for a reason and it's because situations can change in an instant. (A bad injury, unexpected illness & trouble with the law to name a few.)

It felt like their biggest mistake was committing so much money to new players under 1 manager then opting to sack that manager so soon into the season. Then the new manager comes in and is stuck with a bunch of players who were just purchased that don't fit into their system. The same issue plagued united for so long, as a manager would come in, sign a bunch of players then leave, and the next manager simply wouldn't use them for their intended purpose.

Chelsea got what they paid for with Potter, last season at Brighton when he got them into 9th they scored less goals than 16th place Everton. Hiring a manager known for not scoring many goals and then complaining about a lack of goals seems like pure idiocy on behalf of chelsea fans. Chelsea should just forget about everything for the remainder of this season and probably the entire next one and focus on building their team properly. This season is already a bust and I very much doubt they can beat Madrid on the CL, and given the current results they are out of all European competitions for the next season and are gonna start with very low expectations for the regular season based on their current performance, good time as any to work on team building, tactical systems, and whatever else they may need. This also assumes that they get a new manager that can actually work towards this, because Lampard as interim manager is in no way prepared or experienced enough to actually do any of this.
