Mark Twain must be cackling in his grave as the Met chose to embody the very era he skewered for its grotesque inequality. Twain coined "The Gilded Age" to describe the shiny, thin veneer that masked a society rotten with greed-a concept apparently lost on the Met’s guest list, who preferred to dazzle with sequins rather than substance.
Riz Ahmed deserves a slow clap for at least nodding to the blue-collar workers of the period. Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian, ever the historian, donned Marilyn Monroe’s multi-million-dollar dress-because nothing says 'everyday people' like an outfit that costs more than a house.
And then there’s the politicians. Hillary Clinton dusted off her gala shoes to sport a gown subtly stitched with the names of historic women-a sharp contrast to her last Met show-stopper. Mayor Eric Adams sported a tux that screamed 'end gun violence,' an ironic choice for a man beefing up the NYPD in a city where shootings are on the rise. Bravo for the consistency.
As the cream of society’s crop posed for their close-ups, the Supreme Court was busy rolling back decades of reproductive rights, but why let a little thing like the disintegration of bodily autonomy spoil the evening? The rich and fabulous at the Met were too busy out-gilding each other to spare a thought for Florida’s 'Don’t Say Gay' bill or the assault on trans rights sweeping the nation.
