That is so cool that they give you a test on learning a made up language. I can understand that because in language its all about understanding the patterns of how the language works that is important and how quickly you can pick up on those patterns. I want to see this made up language.

I really miss my time at DLI. I graduated earlier this year. While you’re there it seems impossible but I really miss learning so much. A lot of this information is VERY outdated now and it’s done a lot differently now. The length of the schools changes based on the category for the language.

I’m On my way to going to DLI and was wondering if the military will pay for my spouse and kids to move out there considering the length of time it would take to finish? Also if I’m fluent in two languages already do they send me strait to Goodfellow TX rather than Monterrey CA? Nobody seems to have the answers for me in the Army recruiting process

(Ancient History) Used to take an "A-Lat" or "A-Lap" test to get into Army's language school. I tried to enlist in 1973 but couldn't pass the dayum physical, so I never got to take the test for that school. Some languages (like Korean) were longer courses than others (like German).

One of the biggest mistakes that I made when I went into the military back in the 80s. My test scores for a job indicated I should go to their language school on the california coast, but I choose to work on aircraft instead. Long story short, if I could go back in time, lol.

Hey so I'm currently in the same boat where Im waiting on a medical waiver but already tested well. If you scored above a 73 asvab and a 91 ST then, you qualify. They have discontinued the DLAB for now and there is no word if there will be a new test to replace it but, right now your asvab is the only test you need.

There has to be an available slot "position" opened for that particular language. Say if you join a company off 300 soldiers and there's 20 language slots (or positions), those slots have been slated for a certain language, depending on the unit's mission. If you qualify for that job (MOS) and are slated into one of those positions, you get sent to DLI (Defense Language Institute) based on that slot's language need.

Going to meps tomorrow and possibly picking this mos 😳 my recruiter just told me that if you score high enough (above 125) on the ST line score you don’t have to take the DLAB. I’m still slotted to take it but my line score is higher than 125. I’m still hella nervous though
@Aknight292
@Aknight292 3 жыл бұрын
Umm I don't know about that one. I scored a 119 ST score. So i qualified. But i never heard about the 125 thing. I was told that you can lock in the MOS before taking the DLAB, but the DLAB is still required to determine what language you qualify for at the very least. I recently completed everything and am just waiting to go to basic in early March. But I signed on as a 35P

One of my daughters is a total brain with languages and wanted to go to the school, but, has a small accident. Her doctors said she would never get pregnant. Her husband is from Bangladesh, so when things started to get closer, she studied it. In weeks, partially because she immersed herself in it, she could speak it. But, she said she never dreams in it. In Lenape, Iroquois tsalaki, and German, yes, but those are our milk languages, absorbed with Penna's version of English :) this rocks, thanks for making the flick.

If I’ve taken 4 years of Russian (18-22) and go into the military, will they let me keep with my Russian or is there a chance I’d get reassigned?
@georgekornack8790
@georgekornack8790 3 жыл бұрын
you would have to let them know because there is the possibility you could "test out" meaning you know the language and they have you take a proficiency test. It is not guaranteed from what I know though. The military assigns languages based on what is needed at the time. Russian is definitely needed so you may luck out. Best of luck.
@AlexOxygen

I'd assume Russian is desired at this point. If you're still considering, Russian will likely be selected anyway.

@@affablesage9582 I believe that you have to take the DLAB to see what your score is. You get sent to the language that meet's the military's needs. For example, I was in the Army Reserve and was assigned to a PSYOP (Psychological Operations) unit. Our mission is focused on Asia, particularly Korea. There are x amount of slots (or positions) in our unit to fill. Those slots require a certain language. Therefore, they send you to that particular language to study (based on that position's need).
