soupthestarfish Not entirely true, John himself gets a lot of his information from other news sources, I’ve noticed he has a deep regard for Anderson Cooper, for example. That said, it often seems that other news stations are untrustworthy because of their attempts to try to remain unbiased. They often try to report both sides of a story evenly no matter how insane.John doesn’t do this because his show isn’t actually a news program, but a Satire. He is willing to call a spade a spade, and he is willing to call bullshit where necessary, which other programs often can’t (though likely wish they could). Additionally, it’s worth checking out Noam Chomsky’s “Manufacturing consent” to understand why it is best to get your news from a few sources, as some are more willing to tackle some issues than others, although I can’t see any reason to watch Fox News or Fox and Friends except for a laugh or for comparison. As the meme said, “I don’t watch Fox News for the same reason I don’t eat my cereal out of the toilet”. The point is, yes, he speaks truth, and there is no problem with getting your information from him, but don’t give up on all other professional reporting. There are some great journalists out there doing an amazing job, and John would be the first to agree. Just pick your sources carefully, demand facts and be critical.

I didn't know some of it. I was aware of most of the "main" facts but very few of the details of each one. A lot of people really enjoy John Olive and LWT but don't go looking for info about the people on their favorite shows. In other words, I love LWT but don't feel a need to research Oliver. But if you hand me a video with 10 random John Oliver facts I'll watch it if I'm not doing anything else.

There is literally nothing new here..... He is absolutely correct though, for his comedy to work it has to be factually accurate. This is the same for most of the late night comedians that tackle daily issues (Meyers, Colbert, Bee, Noah, etc) the only agenda is that it needs to be funny. Meaning any news discussed on these shows can often times be more factually accurate than reading it in a newspaper, or watching any of the US news channels. They are producing higher quality journalism than most of the mainstream media.

I first saw John Oliver doing stand-up in a small pub in Leeds called The Original Oak in 2005. There can't have been more than about 25-30 people in the room and I found him absolutely hilarious - a great show. Furthermore, as there normally is in British audiences, there was a very drunk heckler, whom Oliver dispatched of with such ease and style that I had instant respect for him. I never heard of him again until I saw Last Week Tonight on KZfaq a couple of years ago, but it was a very pleasant surprise.

John Oliver is AMAZING!!!!! I have his Marlon Bundo book and I want it to become an animated movie ASAP!!! I watch Last Week Tonight every week and I rewatch past episodes on youtube. He is smart, funny, and creative. Jeff the Diseased Lung in a Cowboy Hat, Eminem v New Zealand National Party, Mr. Nutterbutter, and.... just about everything about that show is amazing. Btw I donated a $10 bill taped a bag of sunflower seeds to Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption when it was still open. John Oliver never fails to crack me up 😂 😂😂😂

@Nikki Swift I have loved John Oliver for over a decade. For those first few years I was really pissed off that so few found his sardonic, Truth speaking, sometimes passive aggressive, sometimes aggressive, complete choosing to be ironic humor not funny. Was it too heady? Was it because he was British and the only TV I could watch as a kid was PBS. Under John Stewart and his audience his fearlessness was uncaged. I find the Oliver effect a testament to abject failure of major news media (entertainment current events). Truth speakers are finally being acknowledged, believed and followed. I LOVE this piece. The end was particularly amazing!

I would vote for Jon Stewart for president and Oliver vice, at any point in mine or my children’s lifetime. They are a perfect Pres/Vice joint army. Jon Stewart has the stigma of MTV on his tail, but I see that as a strength. He was a child of that era and grew up on the front lines of it on MTV. The Daily Show possibly has more factual and unbiased stories than all news media including National Geographic and the wsj. Having comedy running a news show should have been done like the daily show since the inception of news media platforms. It checks the pulse of the news, it makes sure you see the sides that aren’t easily consumable (the news you see on your local tv stations and the three big ones). John Oliver upholds Stewart’s theme of comedy news and was actually a great addition to the daily show during his stint. Being on HBO is just a perfect place for him, and the fact that LWT drops their dueces on youtubey is brilliant. Allowing the unabled to watch their segments without the need for paid cable.
