How These Harry Potter Characters Almost Looked

The Harry Potter film franchise is one of those nearly-perfect film franchises that it almost feels wrong to complain about. Still, we’re going to anyway.
The massively successful film franchise adapted a great deal of JK Rowling’s sprawling wizard saga perfectly but there were a few details that eagle-eyed book lovers noticed were a little off.
Whether it was an incorrect eye color, teeth that were too straight or just details that were completely wrong, Potterheads were quick to take to the earliest messageboards of the internet to air their grievances over any little visual that didn’t align with their favorite series.
There were also instances where early art for the characters showed something very different than the designs we ultimately got.
So let’s grab our time turners and look back over the history of the Harry Potter film franchise to see how all our favorite characters almost looked!

lol, yeah and JK said that the eyes only had to be the same as his mother's, so didn't really matter which colour. Which I guess is why they left the CGI.

@@alyssiawhite304 And then they casted Ellie Darcey-Alden as young Lily and kept her brown eyes in the movies instead of making them blue (with contacts or CGI) to match Daniel Radcliffe's and Geraldine Somerville's blue eye colour..... (There's no problem with Ellie Darcey-Alden as an actress btw, just the fact that they apparently completely forgot the 'same eye colour as his mother' part regarding her character).

Isn't it interesting though that Neville was one of the two possible children who could destroy Voldemort, and in the end he kinda did, because if he didn't kill Nagini, Harry was gonna lose the duel with Voldemort.

Well harry wouldn't have lost his duel with Voldemort in the books because there was no duel, and besides harry was the master of the elder wan, which is how he won in the first place.

bhavana samhita In the books though it’s mentioned that after Easter it really was just Neville. Ginny stayed home and Luna got kidnapped so the only thing they really play a critical role in is helping steal the Sword of Griffindor, but I agree that should’ve been credited to them.

Jimmy Endacott well, most of the world we believe was created by our imagination. For example, countries, religions, democracy. It’s all in our collective imagination. So, I think it’s perfectly normal to be bothered about the lives of imaginary characters, just like it’s perfectly normal to be patriotic to an imaginary country.

Regarding Harry, it is mentioned over and over in the books that he had wild hair that could never be combed or "flattened". What is funny is that they did give Daniel wild hair in the 3rd and 4th movie but then they said "nah"

The thing that bugged me the most was that Harry--and his messy-looking hair was supposed to take after his father. But in every scene they showed James Potter, he looked nothing like Harry, & definitely did *not* have Harry's hair. Frankly, he looked like a generic blah sitcom dad.

You can Harry's hair in the book art. It's short, messy, black hair. To me the closest match in the films was his hair in the third movie.

He's not allergic to contacts. Daniel Radcliffe wore brown contacts in the movie Kill Your Darlings. So he could have wore green contacts for Harry Potter. 🤦

The thing about Hermione's hair: 1. She did fix it once with magic, for the Yule Ball, but complained it took forever. 2. A hair straightener also takes forever. 3. A hair straightener couldn't work within Hogwarts, anyway, as muggle electronics don't work because of the magic. They go haywire. 4. Even if they could, there are 100% NO outlets in Hogwarts anyway. 5. Frizzy hair isn't bad, so why would Hermione want to change it anyway when there are more important things she can focus on, like school?

Can...we talk about this commentary on Hermione? The whole point was that she didn't care to change her appearance through magic (until her teeth, which came as a big shock). And she didn't care to use a hair straightener. Her appearance wasn't her priority. Of course she'd get self-conscious from time to time, but she was supposed to be one who didn't even think or doing anything to 'fix' her hair. It wasn't important.

IVAN IVONOVICH One instance doesn't make a character trait. She also did her hair all nicely for the ball in fourth year, but generally, she was focused more on academics and people's characters to really care to fuss over her appearance. Everyone has times where they notice things about themselves more or feel self-conscious. That isn't really defining.

also, electrical appliances don't work inside Hogwarts, the amount of magic makes them go crazy, Hermione explain that in the Goblet of fire. ALSO she tell harry she had to use a huge amount of a special potion to straighten her hair for the Yule Ball, but that it took her almost 3 hours and wasn't worth it doing it every day. also, not all people with curly hair wants to change them. they actually like them.

In Neville's defense, bullying and trauma don't suddenly disappear just because you start looking more physically attractive. People will still have the negative image of you in their minds and unchanged mannerisms and behavior won't help.

That's not technically mutually exclusive. It unfortunately means the actress played a forgettable character, but it's still the most memorable role she had. That's more of a diss on the actress tho, which probably is harsh. Tonks as a book character tho was not forgettable even tho movie Tonks was.

How can frizzy hair "not make sense" ? -If you read the books, you would have known that Hermione did use magic once on her hair, and said it took a really long time. -If you ever talked to a person with frizzy hair, you would have known it's the same issue : hair straightener is not a magic tool that makes your hair straight and shiny. It takes a crazy long time. It's not easy to master. It damages your hair. And not everyone has one. Plus Hermione character is not one who cares a lot about her appearance anyway. -FRIZZY HAIR IS NOT A PROBLEM TO FIX. It's just a type of hair.

By that logiv, noone should have straight/smooth hair either, because curling irons exist. I listen to audiobooks at night to sleep and I do the same thing, but I do picture the actors as the characters and when I read the books I hear their voices. But I agree. Mind movies are better.

Actually, Neville shouldn't be on the list because book 7 explicitely mentions that Neville grew to be attractive in a rough way - had a growth spurt, lost plenty of weight so he wasn't chubby anymore and had some scars from the frequent abuse from the Carrows and their cronies - those kind of scars that aren't disfiguring, but just make a guy look more badass.

He's probably not a costume designer, or a CGI artist, or a figure artist, which makes it unfair to hold him accountable to a task he can't possibly complete. He is an analyst though, and in that he seems so-so. And he's also video editor and voice actor, and on that note, I just gotta ask: why this personality-less approach? He sounds like he's announcing something at a "cool corporate retreat" or something. Like a bad VJ on an MTV knock-off channel. He's clearly got a great voice and a grasp of broadcasting, so why make it sound so cheesy?

Quite a few of the characters didn't get some of their best moments from the books. Ron and Ginny Weasley in particular were made to look like useless baboons in favour of Hermione. Hermione is close to a "Mary Sue" in the films and it's rather irritating because at least in the books, Hermione actually had plenty of *flaws*

I was really disappointed they didn't fully go into all of Snape's Pensieve memories about him and Lily in The Deathly Hallows movie part 2. All of that was so defining for Snape and Lily's backstories and characters, but they just sped through it. The first Snape Pensieve scene that Harry saw in Order of the Phoenix was also rushed in that movie. The books were better.

Hermione had frizzy hair because when you brush curly hair when dry it becomes frizzy, also her character didn't care about her looks she was more focused on her studies and the pursuit high knowledge. Yeah she started to care about guys as puberty hit but her looks weren't the most important thing to her, especially as there was a psychotic megalomaniac trying to kill her and her friends. I think having a hair straightener or using magic to make your hair less frizzy is not really on your mind when you are fighting just to live the next year. Also if I remember correctly when she was experiencing high levels of stress of anger her magic moved through her hair in a static or electric kind of way. If you every played with a plasma globe you know that electricity can cause a frizzy effect on hair. Also electric devices don't work well surrounded by magic unless magically altered.

Personally, it is totally my headcanon/fanon, and if the movies ever get remade (which they will be, the question is more like, when..), I hope to see her as a person of color. Of course, with how we saw so much of Dumbledore being gay in the new movies, after she announced it once the books were over and she never had to actually deal with it..

Movie Harry's eyes were blue because Daniel Radcliffe suffered an allergic reaction to the contact lenses (or lense solution) that would've made his eyes green. So I don't think less of the movies for going with Radcliffe's natural eye color.

1. Bellatrix’s hair was fine in the movie, a piece of her psychoticness 2. The merpeople picture u showed us is supposed to b one of the 3 subspecies, but I did read the part of what they look like. Dark green hair, yellow eyes (which the movie got but sideways slit pupils), grayish skin on the upper body that’s all humanish with the tail of a silverfish, broken teeth, and a necklace of pebbles. P.S. I still liked the merpeople design in the movie thou.

Bellatrix was described in her younger years as having thick, shining dark hair. In Azkaban (where I assume the pictures in the Prophet were taken), she had 'long, dark hair that looked unkempt and straggly'. And anyway, they were probably trying to imitate Sirius' hair a bit

The one that really pains me is Hermione, because it robbed her character from that amazing transformation at the ball scene, also she does say at some point that wearing stuff to tame her hair everyday is a bore and time waste, also Tonks deserved better . All the others don't really bother me at all, except that Charlie is never shown in the movies and he is also very cool and Bill should have more screen scenes.

Hermione didn't straighten her hair because looks weren't the most important thing to her. She was still beautiful and as the books go on she learns to maintain her hair better. But Hermione valued her knowledge more than her appearance. At least in my opinion.

As the books go on, she doesn't learn to maintain her hair better. She does it once and literally says the next day that she finds it too impractical to do it every day. Book!Hermione is beautiful in the same way that 95% of real life girls are - she's average looking, neither ugly nor completely stunning. She just looks normal, and except for special occasions (yule ball, Fleur and Bill's wedding) doesn't do anything to enhance her appearance because while she does get a bit insecure from time to time, generally her looks aren't that important to her. Emma Watson on the other hand is naturally stunning. That's not her fault, but it changes what the audience sees to a certain extent.

Well the main thing that was wrong with Ron is that in the books he's supposed to be super tall and kind of skinny, wheras in the movies he ended up of normal corpulence. Ginny was also supposed to have that "cool girl aura" instead of just being the shy younger sister.

Totally missed Hermonie. First off, she didn’t fix her teeth because she was being bullied. She was hit with a jinx to that made them grow to her collarbone. When she went to the healer to fix them, she had them fixed to be normal length. Secondly, the whole point is she could fix her frizzy hair but didn’t bother. She was too busy studying and researching to care.

Literally if you don’t like the movies because the actors don’t look like the books then you have clearly never done theatre tv film or anything in that realm you should be happy that we have good actors bringing us some pretty solid movies Edit why would people attack the actor who plays Neville for going through puberty

Trisha Young I work in theater and there were several times where I’ve had to change a character’s looks because it just was not possible for the stage. Film has a lot more flexibility but not that much if you don’t want it to look cheap

yes, they must've some reasons why they changed the details. It would be a honor for them to do exactly the same as the details but things get more complicated when they started to make the movie, like how did the actors feels about the extentions (side notes they're still underage and lil kids's 'comfortness' is an important thing), can they act, did it bother them, the technology in that time, the time limit, the plot, etc. and actually it brings some weird feels when the movie didn't match 100% with the books, so u wanted to watch the movie over and over again, re-read the books, talks about it for years, and try to bring u to new journey.

They do actually mention in the movie that Greyback was a werewolf. Bill Weasley mentions that he was bitten by him in Deathly Hallows part one when he is in the Dursley’s house near the start of the film.

McGonagall and Snape were meant to be quite a bit younger than they were portrayed as. I believe this was also the case for Sirius, but they could explain this away by saying that he looked aged after his years of torture in Azkaban. I just remember that Sirius was supposed to be quite handsome and kind a the ladies man.

Sometimes an actor walks into the audition room and the producers prefers their look/style compared to the original character design, so ye in many cases they are open minded and let the role choose the character itself
