Rent being so expensive there is really not all too surprising. Hawaii is made up of a few relatively small but beautiful islands, and there’s no shortage of Americans and foreigners who want to move there. But there’s not exactly many places to establish new housing complexes on small islands, so the cost of living therefore increases to fit the demand.

So a 3 bedroom house is appx. $3,000.00 to $4,500.00/month, and that doesn't include water, electricity, cable, food you need to eat to survive (that's a whole different ball game)... Fuel at $5.00/ gallon Milk at $8.00/ gallon Cereal @ $8.00/ box That's not the only problem. Rich people coming here from all over the world then selling, buying, then selling... Repeat, repeat. Driving up all the Real Estate prices for those of us from here! Yeah, you rich one's, you go buy land somewhere else, because you're half of the problem. Come visit, then go home. Get da picture? Oh, and the payscale is so wayyy off the charts... At $13.00 to $17.00 starting pay, you need 3 to 4 Full-time jobs just to survive. That's the real stuff those other people dont tell you! 😮😢😊😂

As a Hawaiian, it's sad to see that tourists get a bad rap because of the actions of a few. For the most part, tourists are not disrespectful and try not to bother anyone, but because one family out of a thousand didn't follow the rules, it makes all tourists look bad; even the good ones. Sadly, this results in many people in my community and other Hawaiians hating haoles and tourists so much that it becomes borderline or actually racist and xenophobic. Yes, some problems in Hawaii are related to tourism, but not ALL of them are. Some issues are caused by ourselves, but locals are quick to point fingers at outsiders because it's easier to do so rather than to own up and fix it ourselves. And the worst part is that it works since locals already hate haoles and the haoles feel bad for things that happened a hundred years ago.

@@nicktune1219 Hawaii's economy does not rely on tourism. Corporations rely on tourism to Hawaii. Those corporations do not benefit the economy of Hawaii. The problem is tourism. You can't stop an American citizen from buying a house in Hawaii you can't stop an American citizen from charging rent for that location and not living there or putting it on to Airbnb or verbo unless you ban Airbnb and Verbo. Hawaiians can't vote on something that is a constitutional right of sorts. States cannot go against the US Constitution. So Hawaiians cannot restrict traveling and they cannot fix the issues with corporations. Because corporations are to be privately owned in a capitalist society which the United States is.

@@fallen1219 Well getting a better high paying job could also possibly be an issue. Houses are millions of dollars, and not every homeless person can just magically get millions of dollars. Since the government sets high expectations when tourists come, more tourists mean more money, more money means more eviction, more eviction equals homeless. And “getting a better job” isn’t really an option because there is barely any jobs that will pay such high amounts in Hawaii. Most things you see in Hawaii on the west side is homeless people, and food trucks. Food trucks are small things for some families to make money, and stay home. The ones that push their dead refrigerators and stoves off the back of their pickup trucks on to the roadside by pristine (WAS pristine) forests instead of driving a few more miles to the transfer station. Cleaning up after their dogs at the beach. This ain't the tourists or the transplants. It is the born and raised locals. They forgot what the word "aina" means. Or even tourism restrictions…. but then you realize that several facets of the economy thrive off of tourism and Hawaii relies on the money it receives from it. Thus, obviously it’s not the tourists who are to blame. It’s most likely the overly inflated prices of regular store items, like you said.

I’m not native Hawaiian but lived there for a while and we moved bc we couldn’t even find parking when trying to have a family day at the beach and prices are ridiculous, drugs are a huge problem and when u park at the beach sometimes ppl break windows to get your money and homelessness is crazy bro. And natives are annoyed bc tourists aren’t respecting the land, buying houses there for vrbo and airbnb and the locals can’t find houses to live in, people are taking stuff from the island, ppl aren’t reading the signs! So if you plan to visit please respect the locals and the sea life, READ SIGNS and if you go out try to go to local restaurants not chain restaurants (prices are crazy so most ppl just eat pbjs or ramen)

For the people complaining about tourism: Hawaii’s economy is mostly based off tourism. Tourism helps the economy there and it provides a large percentage of the jobs there. Also the price of housing has to go up to meet the demand of people wanting to move there because there isn’t much room to build more housing complexes on those small islands, so obviously it’s expensive to live there.

⚠️Here's another fact about Hawaii, that you wouldn't know unless you've been, cuz it is very obvious! But did you know that the tourist not only destroy the land but also kinda helps at the same time! And they also are pushing all the homeless out to the west side, so no tourists can see the reality of the amount of locals getting kicked out of their rightful island! They also made it “public knowledge” (even tho they’ve been doing it for years now) for any homeless who wants a one way ticket from their home to the mainland can get a ticket!!!! Literally pushing them out and bribing them with a lil cash to make the disappear!⚠️

The history of how the islands got taken away from its people is so upsetting to me. I put him in his place and educated him of the truth of what happened. Someone said “Drug addiction is no joke.” That’s everywhere, it’s just not Hawaii. I have been brought up to respect all cultures, and I love the land; it’s so beautiful, and what people are doing for the greed: like destroying land is disgusting. I always get confused why Homes and stuff don’t seem a rich as you’d think, and planes aren’t as advanced as you’d think. Does American take a bunch of Hawaii’s money, or something like that? Another statement, who would disrespect locals? I would love to see locals, they are such beautiful people. The place is extremely expensive, and it’s horrible for the people who live here. I went to Kauai and the big island in June for my honeymoon and it was the most amazing life experience I've ever had. ❤️ What a beautiful place, the people are kind and helpful, and experiences you cannot have anywhere else in the world. Despite people commenting here, "please stay away", the people i met there were incredibly kind and welcoming. We visited mauna kea and watched the sunset at the highest observatory in the world, we watched lava boil up for Kilauea, and noticed these very unique blossoms we later visited big island bees who pollinated those same flowers near the volcano. Steam vents you can feel the steam in safe areas. We went to the only cloud forest in our country, a forest literally in the clouds and i met the family that created it starting in the 80s. I flew in a helicopter around the island and saw waterfalls over 1,000 feet tall, the crystal clear waters, and the flows of past lava and moist recent that covered a large area this past December. I saw ancient ruins inaccessible on foot. I visited a cave with critically endangered species only found in that cave. I will remember my trip for the rest of my life and i feel like I've checked off a whole lifetime worth of bucket list items.

Verse of the day “Instead, he emptied himself by taking on the form of a servant, by becoming like other humans, by having a human appearance. He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, death on a cross.” ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭7‬-‭8‬ ‭GW‬‬
