Rick Green
Former member of the popular Canadian comedy troupe, "The Frantics" and cro-creator of the "Red Green show", one of the top Canadian comedies of all time, Rick Green is celebrated as one of the biggest names in Canadian entertainment. When he was diagnosed with ADD after one of his children was found to have it, his work took a new turn. Writing and directing an award winning documentary called "ADD and loving it?" he became a major advocate for ADHD. He's currently writing a book with Dr. Umesh Jain called "ADD stole my Car Keys".
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Yes! That same triad has been transformative for me too, especially Jessica. And like Rick said in another talk, there are many things one can do to help treat ADHD, but the biggest thing is JUST. KNOWING. What a phrase! YES! Simply KNOWING it's ADHD has quite _literally_ changed my life. One even could say... _saved_ my life.

"ADD & Loving It" - It took me 3 tries before I could watch it all the way through. IT IS GREAT!!! I so wish the information we know now was known in the late fifties and sixties. Perhaps I wouldn't have gotten the "Isn't reaching full potential" on so many report cards. No kidding. I'm still learning how to understand & embrace this brain particular. Thank you Rick for your work in this field.

I think the sad part is when you have adhd and no one wants to treat you or prescribe you something to minimalize the effects. I've had adhd and no doctor wants to give me treatment. On top of which, even getting it diagnosed takes time and effort that people with adhd can't even do. You expect people with adhd to, book a doctor appointment,get asked 3 questions after waiting 2 hours to actually get seen, be told to make another appointment to get asked 2 more questions, then be told to have a blood test, then be told to wait a week, then see the doctor to see if your blood test is ok, then wait another week or 2 to get assets by like a theopists. Alot of people just say screw it and deal with adhd their whole life because it's so god dam difficult to even get it diagnosed these days. And it's probably why alot of people with adhd mainly men just comit suicide eventually, because they just think it's never going to settle and the pain,depression,anxiety, the head constantly switched on and throbing, the sleepless nights. Just gets to them and they can't take it anymore

You lose your keys, and I check the mail three times a day. While checking the mail one day, I found the box empty, and my right hand full of mail that I'd removed from the box minutes previously. The keys in hand were a stimulus to go check the mail.

I have to put my wallet and keys on the same end table or they disappear. I reported my wallet stolen and found it on the radiator in my living room. My cellphone migrates. It shows up on the porch, in the refrigerator, on the toilet tank, in my truck, in my jacket, in my pocket, or even in my hand. If I have to make a call on a Friday I say to myself it can wait until Monday, I don't want to bother them. Monday comes and I figure a lot of other people thought the same thing and they will be less busy Monday. I had forgot Monday was a holiday so i will call Tuesday. I forget Tuesday through Thursday. So it is Friday again and I figure I might as well wait until Monday...and the cycle continues.

Thank you for this talk!!! You hit all of the emotions. I’m from the US so I didn’t know about you. You are amazing, funny and so smart! My son is struggling with Add. Decided he does want to take his meds anymore. But it’s his senior year in high school. So his grades have went down the tubes. Now he is doubting himself and ability to go to college.
@xinaesthetic
@xinaesthetic 4 жыл бұрын
I hope you’re managing to find a good path for your son (or even better, that he finds one for himself) and that the world he grows up in will be more truly inclusive and appreciative of his true abilities rather than judging him for not fitting into the neuro-typical mould. When I was his age, I pretty much failed all my exams but ended up finding a less conventional path (that does still very much involve universities). I won’t claim that I’ve fulfilled all my potential or that I don’t struggle, but sometimes emerging from adversity can lead to greater things and we need to advocate for society to embrace and appreciate diversity rather than branding people who don’t measure up to tired outmoded standards - such as those of high school exams - as failures.

Was watching this on public television. I check most of the boxes. Self medicated for decades and overwhelmed by anything that does not hold my attention. Two divorces, lost friends, family that can't understand. Flunked spelling and straight A's in History. Suspended. My 2nd wife had us go to counseling then told me she wanted a divorce. I don't even remember going to the counseling. Obsessed with comedy and music. Even had a couple crazy songs played on Dr. Demento.

Thank you for providing this! my family believes I have this disorder. A past dr prescribed Adderral for me. I recently read that Adderral taken with Citalipram (for depresion) can cause issues. My new dr said to take them at separate times. I've not sen any improvement. I'll have to look into getting tested.

I don't either. You might have developed coping strategies, it's very common. I was diagnosed at 34 and I learned that my perfectionism is a way of dealing with the chaos. Everything has to have its place in my house and on my computer. Nothing is random. But there are many downsides to that strategy as well; you become very inflexible. A few years back my girlfriend and I moved in together. Turned out I have ADD and she has ADHD. Can you imagine how our relationship almost crashed and burned because I needed everything to be in its right place, while she was leaving stuff all over the house being a chaotic force of nature?
