What Tires Should I Get For My Truck? BFG K02 - General Grabber ATX - Continental TerrainContact AT
In this video I put the question out to the group on what tires I should get for my truck?. My choices are the BFG K02, General Grabber ATX, and the Continental TerrainContact AT. After the original Firestone Transforce AT bites the dust, they will be due for replacement at about 50,000 miles. They would probably go for another oil change, but I don’t want to take a chance in the middle of winter. Out of all the tire reviews I have made and tires I've sold over the years, I chose the BF Goodrich K02, The General Grabber ATX, and the Continental TerrainContact AT. (Full disclosure, I am a Continental Gold and a Michelin, BF Goodrich, and Uniroyal Dealer) I think I have pretty much made my mind up, but I wanted to put it out to the group to get feedback. Most of my driving is on the highway on long trips or trips towing the RV so I really don’t need a super aggressive tire. I rack up about 30,000 miles per year, so the engine barely gets cold. I don’t take this truck off road much because the suspension is just so stiff, but I do like to have a tire with the capability for some light off road driving and definitely need the winter capability. Let me know what you guys think and thanks for watching!

@@thomasroseman575 Hi man, I don't have snow or ice where I live, but I have used them in really heavy rain and deep water crossings and they have really good grip, I have done some emergency stopping in wet and dry conditions and they don't slip as easy as other tires, they even provide you a lot of feedback when braking, my truck doesn't have ABS and I can brake really hard and feel the point where they want to start the slip but still grabbing the floor. That feedback saved me of hitting an idiot two months ago, he tried to cross the highway on a bicycle and I was able to stop completely before hitting him, with my old tires I would have killed him. The compound of the ATXs is soft and almost like chewy haha. I'm pretty happy with them

I think anything you can do to make a big truck more livable is worth it, and all riders will appreciate that. I’d go with the Contis for your uses, even if just for road noise and smoothness. I think my next tire will be the General ATX. I currently have Kuhmo RoadVenture A/T 51, which have been excellent in snow, ice, mountains, off-road, wear, and couldn’t really ask for better... but I like trying different things. I used to run Firestone Steeltex AT, the precursor to the Transforce, and then the Transforce AT; both were great, long lasting, and I never got stuck in the COLORADO mountains off roading in the snow. BFG now offers a DT model with a longer lasting compound to address the wear issues in some applications. It drops the 3 peak snowflake, and I don’t know if it comes in your size yet.

I just put a set of Continental TerrainContact AT's on my Grand Cherokee. So far, I'm very satisfied, no regrets. Very quiet tire, somewhat firm sidewalls for stability since I do tow a boat, and has very good off-road traction in the rocky terrain I deal with. I've had KO2 before on a 4wd Tacoma and thought they were good off road tires with plenty of grip. But, they chunked out from the rocks, were noisy, and a little stiffer than I wanted. So, I really didn't want to go back to that because of its negatives. I still need more time with the Conti's but my initial impressions are very favorable.

I just swapped out a worn set of the Continentals (285/45/22). They were a great tire on the road, wet or dry, and still great in the rain even down to the wear bars. I never run tires that low on tread, but they still had great traction. That said, they’re not the best in snow and mud and the tread wear wasn’t very impressive. I wanted something with the triple peak rating, so I’m trying the General Grabber APT. They look similar to the Continentals, but start out with 2/32 more tread and have a slightly more aggressive tread. We’ll see.

Whatever Tire you get make sure you get them high speed balanced, since you drive a lot of high speed and that will make your tires last a lot longer. I got 107k miles out of a set of Grabber at2. On a 02 Tacoma. Tires do get harder the older they get. I've noticed that the last 2 years.

I have a 2016 Ram Rebel with LT285/70 R 16‘s. The factory tires were Toyo Open Countries and I got 44K miles on them, so pretty good mileage out of them but they are slippery in the snow and slippery in the rain. Like you, I use my Ram for towing often in the summer, I have a 9000 pound travel trailer. Last week I put on a set of general grabber ATX tires and headed out for a camping trip four hours away. The squirming and the sway of the grabbers was almost to the point of being unsafe. My first call coming back was to the tire dealer to say I wanna get the Grabbers swapped for a set of Continental contact terrains AT. I am hoping for much more sidewall stability from the continentals. Thanks for the video 👍

I have the same truck but in 2017 year ( 4x4 Ram 2500 6.7 cummins), I have the factory Transforce HT's and I have been stuck on flat, level but wet ground with them 3 times . I now carry a shovel. The tires are a great highway tire , no compaints there. However, if you dont plan on having that heavy cummins on the highway 100% of the time then get the General grabbers. They appear to be the most aggressive of the three without a ton of road noise. You really dont need a snow tire because you are like me...you dont want that road salt on it...that is why I drive a corolla for most things such as snow and work. The continental appears to be the best tire of the three but look like they will stick you on wet ground too. In the future I will sacrifice mileage/longevity for the ability to get off of wet flat ground here in SC. I would go with the Grabbers or just keep using those Highway tires and get a winch and a shovel.

Congratulations, Matt! Campus Automotive has the best tire reviews on KZfaq. I'm from Brazil and have a Jeep Compass. I need to replace the 4 tires on my car and after seeing tons of videos and reviews all over the internet, I chose two tires and I need to make the definitive choice here too. I'm between the General Grabber ATX and the TerrainContact AT (which here in Brazil are sold under the name "ContiCrossContact ATR"). I'm not a frequent off-road user but when I do it, most of the time it's on sand, because I live on the beach. You know, between the Grabber ATX and the TerrainContact AT, which one behaves better on beach sand? Which one has the best side construction to accept the lowest pressure without risk of damaging the rubber or popup from de rim?

Great video. I am at the same crossroads as you are. It is time to replace the tires on my wrangler. I currently have Perelli all-terrain’s and I do like them. However I’m not impressed with the Perelli performance. Just like you said the KO2 it’s a great tire with terrific traction and that is absolutely true but they do have a tendency to cup and wear quickly. I am also considering the continental and the general. So far I am leaning towards the continental terrain contact at, with general grabber ATX as the second choice and because the KO2 are so awesome in the snow they are also considered.what to do.

I replaced some Goodyears with plenty of treadlife with the Continental TerrainContact A/Ts and I gotta say my truck rides like a new truck and I can leave it in 2WD mode most of the time and be confident that I'm not going to spin out on a little bit of snow or ice or hydroplane every time it rans like I did in the Goodyears. Granted, Goodyears tires are not my first (or even top 10) brand for tires, but the difference in ride quality was quite surprising and they don't break the bank too badly. I was also considering the Nokian all terrains and the Cooper AT3 LTs as well (which has similar tread, good for light off-roading but not overly aggressive to where highway performance is bad). I did not get the BFG because I have friends who said they got around 10k on a set and did fine on Coopers, which are softer and don't last as long as some others.

I was pulling my bosses 3500 gmc dually out of a snow bank with a 16 foot dump trailer on his truck uphill in a foot of snow. My only issue with the ko2's was longevity. So I started looking for a road worthy replacement and it just happens to be the 3 you have in your video. I’ve decided to go with the Continental AT’s in the 315/70x17 @34.4” size because it’ll handle everything but severe off roading, which I wouldn’t do anyway. The tire will last 60,000 miles with normal use and should give minimal rolling resistance plus give me about 1.4” increase in height plus they’ll look great. Looking forward to having them put on soon.

I know its an older video but the Continental will ride better and give you a better driving experience. Just not the more aggressive look the other tires may give off. The BFG KO2's is what I had last on my GMC 3500 w/5th wheel and I was none impressed AT ALL!! When I said something to Discount Tire the rep said my Ranch Hand Bumper is really heavy and was likely the cause of the quick and uneven wear LMAO! So I decided if I cant find a tire that last like they claim then I may as well just put some big mud tires on the truck and except having to change them sooner than I would like to. I decided to buy some 33's mounted on the factory rims, also these tires where made in China and only cost me $160 a piece installed (Deep Diggers) and I have to say I was very pleased with them for the price and the way the tires handled. It comes out to practically the same money when I buy 2 sets over 50,000 miles. Plus I get newer tires twice and the nice new look twice in the same time period. Never again will I pay almost $400 a tire after all their fees and warranty B.S.

Finally; the video I’ve been waiting for. ATX vs KO2. If the KO2 had BOTH a mileage warranty as well as the 3-peak rating in the same tire, it would be a no-brainer. It’s my opinion that they look the best and are well proven. Although the ATX has a 2-ply sidewall vs. the KO2’s 3-ply (load rage D & E), I’ve read multiple times on the net where it’s two 1500 denier plies vs KO2’s three 1,000 denier plies (same overall thickness). I’ve also seen multiple points of feedback that suggest the ATX is absolutely phenomenal in the snow, even compared to the well known KO2. I think the Terrain Contact AT looks like it’s a half step above your Transforce AT in traction. I’d love to see a legitimate, non-biased, on & off road review between the ATX & KO2. Out of your group, I would choose the General Grabber ATX owned by Continental, close to what I use I run Nitto Ridge Grapplers, maybe you could do a quick side by side on those I wanted to stay in the Continental family, but I fell in love with the Nitto Ridge Grapplers BFG owned by Michelin lowered the durometer on the K02 making the the tread softer like a snow tire to get the snowflake symbol that doesn't help much ,and they wear out twice as fast because of thIs, like driving winter tires in the summer, not good and they get ripped to shreds off-road on rocks and gravel I wish I would have read the small print on the requirements for the snowflake symbol before I bought the BFG KO2's they are useless on ice and hard packed snow I copied and pasted the whole snowflake symbol :requirements at the end of this comment, Here's a piece I copied and pasted from below (Testing measures a tire's acceleration traction on medium-packed snow only. Braking and turning on snow, along with ice traction are not components of the test) THERE IS NO WAY TO GET A TIRE FOR BOTH WINTER AND SUMMER, I LIKE MOST PEOPLE TRIED TO FIND THE HOLY GRAIL TIRE THAT'S EXCELLENT ALL YEAR ROUND, REQUIRING NO WINTER TIRE CHANGES UNFORTUNATELY, THAT TIRE DOESN'T EXIST I run Nitto Ridge Grappler for spring, summer, fall as I have a 4runner , and don't want to get stuck in the spring and fall wet ground, looking like a idiot, like I did with the BFG KO2's , useless in light mud too And for winter I run Continental VikingContact 7 , driving on these in the winter, is like driving on Nitto Ridge Grappler in the summer, they are that good, except for the off-road part It cost the same in the long run to buy 2 sets of tires as, they will last as long collectively as 2 sets of all season tires and 4 times a long as BFG KO2's , as they last about half as long as other tires in the group Only extra cost is another set of rims I use those ugly steel wheels for winter as they will be covered in muck anyway, and if you slam into a curb or huge pot hole under the snow the cheap steel rim will bend and take the damage, not your suspension, and you will have no trouble matching them for cheap, if one does get eaten by winter My friend runs Continental TerrainContact AT, they don't have a snowflake symbol , but are better in the winter than the K02's that he replaced too, we both bought the BFG KO2's for looks, but the new Nitto Ridge Grappler looks a lot better He was surprised, and so was I that the Nitto Ridge Grapplers are as quiet and performs as well on pavement as his Continental TerrainContact AT's, and of course mine are far superior off-road His next set is going to be the Nitto Ridge Grapplers and getting Continental VikingContact 7 snow tires like I did, as the Continental TerrainContact AT's, aren't even close to them in winter 1 out of 10 compared to the Continental VikingContact 7 as you would expect Here is the snowflake symbol requirement: A three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol branded on a tire's sidewall indicates the tire meets required performance criteria in snow testing to be considered severe snow service-rated. Originally used as a designation for winter tires, the 3PMSF symbol is now featured on some all-season and all-terrain tires with snow performance that meets the testing criteria. Testing measures a tire's acceleration traction on medium-packed snow only. Braking and turning on snow, along with ice traction are not components of the test. Tires branded with the 3PMSF symbol are expected to provide improved snow traction beyond a standard M+S branded all-season tire. Note: 3PMSF-branded all-season and all-terrain tires cannot match the traction of dedicated winter / snow tires in all winter weather conditions and should not be considered a replacement for where and when a dedicated winter tire is needed My 2 cents

I'm going to take your advice and go with the continental AT. In my opinion KO2 are overrated unless you only run off road. For the rest of us who use tires to commute to work, I had so many flats and slid around in rain many times with KO2's

Im considering something besides the KO2 because of this same issue. I have never had to rotate my E rated KO2 on my Tacoma but now that it is close to 4/32 it loses traction on wet pavement from a stop.
