The biggest thing I learned when sparring was you can be in great cardio shape but if you don’t do a lot of boxing specific workouts your shoulder endurance will fail you before your cardio haha

Interesting, I intend to get into boxing myself and all pro and amateur boxers have told me that maintaiming stamina over 8 to 12 rounds is more important than anything else. I've even heard a wrestler tell me that having stamina for boxing was much harder than wrestling.

@@Jordancheddar I actually think wrestling would be easier because it's more of a natural sport, you can always go all out when wrestling against someone. Punching someone and having the chin to withstand blows to the head and body whilst having the stamina to go 12 rounds is more taxing on the body because it's not natural.

So bad to suggest to do abs more than once a day, or even once a day tbh… unless your training volume is really low, it’s just not sensible in the slightest and will just fatigue you. Every muscle group should be trained every other day so they can rest…

@@QuiteStupid73 Yeah they are 💯 but if your intensity is high, then it’s not sensible irrespective of how quickly abs recover. The same premise with training every day, you’re really supposed to have at least 1 rest day a week so your body can rest - saying to new boxers that training abs every day is good is misleading, because it isn’t. If you train them every other day then you can maintain that for a substantial time but if you train them every single day, you’re likely to need 1-2 rest days a week because that’s simply too much volume to allow for recovery. Although like I said it’s dependant on intensity. I do callisthenics as well as boxing and if I do a session with a lot of dragon flags and human flags I need a days rest after.

My tip is just book your first session, don’t think about it. I booked mine. Didn’t think about it until I walked through doors at boxing gym on the day. That was around 5 years ago. Time goes so quickly before you know it you say u been boxing a year. Like look how quickly the last year went. So just pick up your phone and book it now. No excuses. If you wanna do something u find a way. If you don’t, u find an excuse

Here’s some advice before starting - jog 2-3 miles - skip 3 mins 30 second rest x 4 - do some press-ups - relax and don’t take advice as critisim, you ain’t gunna get everything down in the first 2 mins, don’t stress if you haven’t got it mastered by the first session (no one expects you to be rocky)

Did 30 minutes of "boxing" training with my dad. Felt like I was gonna pass out afterwards. I was just hitting pads not even getting hit lol and I'm lighter than I have been but still it's so hard. That's why I love watching boxers because you have no idea how much stamina it takes to go 3 minutes let alone 12 rounds. Great advice bro

Yup conditioning and learning how to breathe efficiently is the key when starting out. You can learn stances, movement, punches but it means nothing if you gas out in a min

coach back in high school on the track trained us jog for 3 minutes at a pace of about 5 miles per hour breathing through your nose only, then he would have us walk for 1 minute taking slow deep breaths through mouth only, to condition your mind on proper breathing technique 10 sets 4 times a week, it was good for me then, it's still good for me today and I'm 62

@@ragnar930 thats the coach and the boxers fault, when a new guy steps into our gym, they treat him nice, you can never know what talent hidden in people, also fighter are usually full of discipline and they will not show their power to a new guy, if thats what they doing at your gym, then you need to switch theres a lack of confidence and discipline there, in our club no one will ever use his power against someone with no knowledge, even if the coach hear that you had just a brawl on the street you get kicked out

Literally the worst thing I did before my first day of boxing training was that I wasn't at all active due to quarantine for 5 months and work. I put in a lot of pounds, and I just stopped on my vices just a day before my first training day. I thought I was gonna die from exhaustion just from my first round of shadow boxing. I've had intense training sessions when I was a basketball varsity, but nothing as taxing as a regular day in boxing training. Bottom line my boys, you thought you are fit until you try boxing.

@@ellietny3238 two completely different sports, two completely different demands but generally, I'd say yes, boxing training is harder than basketball, basing on my experience. I'd even say generally, combat sports/martial arts training are harder than any sport but thats just my opinion.

@@ellietny3238 the main reason combat sports is more physically and cardio demanding is because you need to give and take shots Getting hit once can take all the "marathon or basketball cardio" out of you if your body is not conditioned at all to get hit hard

Man I remember thinking I had good stamina keeping up with running because of football and turns out that stamina is completely different from being in the ring, within the first 2 rounds I was gassed and got ate up with body shots from my sparring partner glad I got better man love all of my boxers takes a lot to get in there

I went to my first boxing gym about 3 months ago and on my first day I passed out completely only from doing jump rope for 15~ minutes. When I came back around they got me on some bikes and I was able to get through an entire 2 and a half out beginner session. I’ve improved so massively in these past 3 months and I feel a lot better about my body and my physical strength than I did before. Highly recommend boxing gyms of all kinds would pass out again 10/10

@wisewise7121 15 mins is easy af lol what we do to build our cardio is for 20 minutes before we start the session we do skipping then for the last 10 minutes the last 20 seconds of each minute we do double jumps and sprints with the rope of he was severely out of shape tho it makes sense. Update on this since I forgot I wrote this I ran the broad street run a couple months ago (a 10 mile run) and got a time of roughly 1:20. I’ve gained a lot of muscle these past few months and I’m nowhere near stopping. Thanks for all the love ❤️

I’ve been learning through KZfaq vids and turns out I’m a quick learner and kind of a natural at it. I studied the techniques and even film myself to see if I have good form and if not I always change things and adjust. Haven’t joined a gym and took boxing lessons yet but when I do join I feel confident in myself and think I’ll progress a lot since it’s a huge passion of mines :)

I think it’s important to do sprints and calisthenics as well before entering the gym just so you can have an anaerobic and aerobic base as well as a base in strength. And good video ✊🏽

@@117Industries I would run a 2 mile bleacher run, (8 laps around the track with all the bleacher stairs in between) follow it up with sprints and calisthenics, i did that 3-4 days a week for 2 months i was in olympic shape, tapered off at the end. right in time for basketball season.

@Cash Quest it was tiring in ways I didn't expect. I definitely had to use some muscles that I've never much had uae for before. Oh, I also ended up taking kickboxing, as the coach suggested. Also, I already knew that the stamina required in striking is quite different than in grappling. Still, it's a whole other world actually experiencing it. Edit: I enjoyed the drills. I'm the type of girk who learns better from repetitive drills so... yeah

I knew he was foreal when he stated start with endurance and stamina, got alot of weed, cig smokers, and alcoholics that couldnt run up the block from getting high and drunk thinking there mayweather. I felt that shit I need to start running/ jogging foreal, the weather is getting nice out.

I am in great physical condition, my job is very active, I workout 5-6 times a week, and my heart rate recovery is above average. However, my first 30 minute boxing workout consisting of 10 rounds of 2 minutes each with a 1 minute rest in between, I was destroyed. Boxing is a whole other level of cardio and takes a lot of muscle endurance too (mainly shoulders) I recommend newbies alternate between the orthodox stance and use the philly shell when they get tired to give their shoulders a chance to rest. Other than that good luck to ya!

I will go one step further: It takes 4 times the task, and it is tedious as can be, to unlearn a bad habit, than it does to struggle a bit with learning properly. Another thing that is overlooked is just simple calisthenics. Days you arent running push ups and pull ups can be a great way to build some baseline form of strength and muscle to those guys who havent really been that active before.

You're absolutely right, it makes perfect sense but it wasn't the case with me, i used to watch tutorials and train at home (shadow boxing and heavybag) i used to video record myself and than compare what im doing to the tutorials and lessons i watch on KZfaq than try to adjust and fix the mistakes i do and it actually helped me learn almost all the basics the right way, it didn't take too long for me to start with the advanced stuff when i joined the boxing club, ofc there were some adjustments here and there but nothing too big. This is great advice. Started maybe 9 months ago, was in decent shape, but got gassed after a round of light sparring. Gotta run..adding sprints/hills will help you progress faster. Abs so you can take body shots and move quickly with slips/rolls Jumprope has become a hobby of mine since I started as well (took a couple months to get good) and i can hang w the best of them. Its also helped me to be a lot lighter on my feet when I spar💯🥊 Also..just do it💪🏼

I appreciate this. Barely started lifting weights and doing 100 crunches a day. I’m currently trying to work on my jogging. Struggling to squeeze out 2 miles straight. I’ll get to 5 miles Monday Wednesday Friday routine like how I used to when I was 21. I’m joining a boxing gym January. I been lifting Weghts for the last 3 months and I must say I’ve lost 15 pounds. And feel better than I have in 10 years. Im trying to brush up on self defense. And have fun getting in shape at the same time.

I am nearly 32 years old, horribly out of shape, and never been in a fight before. I am considering joining a boxing gym to help me lose weight and help me gain more confidence in myself. I think the most important thing that you said in this whole video was to not practice any punches. I started teaching myself like a year and a half ago and I've gotten pretty ok, I have something of everything I worked on footwork, defense, and offensive drills I'm also 5'5 and 120 pounds and I've sparred amateur fighters and did well but what I have noticed is you can only go so far without a boxing coach I eventually want to go pro and I'll need a boxing coach for that

I just started boxing for the first time last week. After one class here’s what i noticed. First off, I used to run and have insane cardio and stamina. It’s been a couple years since then but the cardio has stuck with me quite a bit as I work in the trades and am constantly pushing myself. Dude is most certainly totally correct about not even trying to start throwing until you get to the gym. Seems like it was a good way to develop bad habits and strain on your wrists. After my first class i gotta say, my arms were BEAT. The short head of my biceps are still sore as hell and last time i trainer was 4 days ago. My chest (abs/serratus) are also still a little achy but better than my arms. This guy is definitely right about making sure you’re at least capable of lasting the whole session in terms of your overall stamina and i could see how doing abs/running 3mi ever other day would be beneficial, but there are also BIG fellas in the gym that ik would be dead after a mile. I guess it depends on your own weight/physique but don’t let all that discourage you from starting. Even if you can’t run 3 miles boxing will definitely help you get some cardio back, but if you wanna be the best you’re gonna have to put in that work on your own time without a trainer. I don’t know a damn thing about boxing besides my few classes but as a beginner it’s tough, but not impossible. I put it off for so long thinking i wouldn’t be ready and then i just did it. Best decision i’ve made in ages.

man I've been in the gym for almost a decade and have the worst stamina. My heavy arms + bad stamina will definitely gives me hell the first day of boxing training. Still excited for it tho

Needed this, I’ve always told everyone ima be a boxer when I’m older, and I keep by my word, since 14 I taught myself how to jump rope, build my endurance and cardio, technique and footwork(which of course I understand I will needa coach for it) and I needa jump on it with my weight and such. I keep telling everyone I’ll be the best boxer in the next 10 years, I’ll stand by my word.

He's right and wrong on that, if you have a mind for it you can easily get really good without a boxing gym. I've been working on my striking for more than 10 years on a bag and always asking questions and watching videos as well. I also watched fights in boxing and even UFC just studying and trying what these higher end fighters do. For me personally it worked wonders and I've had people in my Jiu Jitsu club thinking I actually took boxing and came from a boxing club even the black belts in my club comment monthly on how quick I progress. It can depend on the person, I don't doubt you're decent at boxing if we were to do a light spar

It's a muscle group that is used almost constantly anyway so it's fine to train them everyday. You can do calves and legs everyday also. Just rotate the intensity and don't over do it.

Very informative video. I lift weights 4 days a week and started running again. I used to run a mile in 8 minutes but now it takes me 16 minutes. Didn't know abs should be done everyday. I was thinking about joining mayweathers boxing club in my area but I think $150 dollars a month is steep. I always wondered how boxers move up in weight class and don't gain weight in their abdominal area. When sugar ray fought hagler he gained 15 pounds but his waistline had no fat around it. As for me, I'll be 60 yrs old in november but I still like exercising.

This was great advice. I have been self learning for 2 years while training hard. I improved significantly and I seem to have the mechanic of the majority movements down but also am afraid of habits I may of made. My learning was purely visual and by critiquing my shadow boxing through comparison. Would you have your fighter train from scratch at this point?
