What To Do If You Hate Your Real Estate Job (& How To Fix It) // Through running the Break Into CRE Academy platform over the past few years, I’ve come to realize that there are a lot of people out there who are trying to work their way out of a “false start” entrance into the real estate industry, usually in the form of taking a position that wasn’t the right fit to begin with.
And I’ve personally found myself in similar situations, and especially when this happens right out of college or grad school, just sticking it out for a few more years can feel like an eternity when you’re in your 20s and trying to build a career for yourself.
So, if you feel kind of like a “fish out of water” in your current role and know there’s something better out there for you (but just don’t know what that is), here are two big things that you can do if you do find yourself hating your job to figure out if you’re on the wrong career path or not, and if so, how to land on your feet and in a much better position in your next career move.

What are some of your career red threads?

I took an entry level AM job a few months back after not finding anything else for about six months. It is far below my skill level and I am bored doing nothing most of the day. I am contemplating returning to accounting in the real estate industry as I can command a salary 50% higher than I make today. I just don't see the current role getting me where I want to go. I'm worried I will either need to commit a few years to a low paying salary or go and get an expensive MBA to get into a REPE firm or make a decent wage. Outside of applying for new jobs I spend my free time researching and analyzing real estate opportunities I could invest in personally. I will say it is hard sometimes to pull myself away from my phone and actually try and push myself forward

Definitely understandable and sounds like a tough spot - thank you for honestly sharing. Fortunately, real estate shops can operate (and pay) very differently from one another, so it may just be that your current company or the AM discipline isn't the right fit. If you want to be in CRE long-term and don't want to go back into accounting as a career path, it may be worth looking into different, more pay-for-performance roles in CRE next rather than exiting the industry. Thanks again for sharing your story - good luck!

Great video, thank you! I've just joined the industry as a graduate in portfolio & asset management at a REIM firm. I've been fortunate to have had a broader experience in capital raising and transactions as well. I'm thinking of moving into a boutique fund that is more "value add". What would you recommend I should do now, to walk into futures interviews in a relatively strong position?

Congrats on landing the role, Amar! To move into a position at more of a boutique shop, technical modeling skills are where I'd focus most - smaller shops are going to be looking for for someone who can build models from scratch for complex deal scenarios, especially if you're targeting a more transaction-oriented role in acquisitions. Good luck!

is it easy to start from an agency lending/originations internship to an acquisitions/REPE/REIB internship?
@BreakIntoCRE
@BreakIntoCRE 3 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily easy, but a real estate-specific internship should be helpful regardless of whether you were in lending, brokerage, or PE - if your technical skill set is there, I think you're still in a great spot to move into an acquisitions/REPE/REIB internship next. Good luck!

is it too late for a 35 yr old with a background in accounting to get an associate analyst role?
@BreakIntoCRE
@BreakIntoCRE 3 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily - your accounting background will help. If you're willing to take a step back career-wise and you can build (and prove) your real estate financial modeling and analysis skill set, it's definitely possible to make that shift. Good luck!

Hi Justin, thanks for another great video. I work in Corporate Finance not Real Estate but still enjoy your videos. Quick question, you mentioned ULI and another organization, what was the name of that second group? Didn’t catch it. Thanks!
