In this video I’m exploring one of the oldest neighborhoods of Mexico City, which used to be a small colonial village before.
San Angel has cozy cobblestone streets, old monasteries, colonial villas and busy Saturday bazars. Mexico City and the national government have issued declarations to preserve the unique heritage of this neighborhood, which I’m showing in this video. I started from the little park in front of the San Jacinto Church, which was founded in the late 16th century by Dominican friars. Nowadays, it's popular for high-society weddings and if you are there on a weekend, you might see one.
Next to the entrance to the church yard, there is a Plaza Tenanitla. There is a bazar there on Saturdays, where you can shop mainly for local crafts. Casa del Obispo is an art gallery, where you definitely can find something for a gift or a valuable tasteful art for yourself. Even if you are not shopping, I highly recommend to go there and enjoy the inner yard.
Another good place to shop is El Bazaar Sabado, organized in old colonial building. You can also get breakfast or lunch there, sitting in a shade of a large tree and listening live music.
Right next to El Bazaar Sabado or Saturday Bazar in English, is Museo Casa del Risco - and former U.S. Army watchtower during the Mexican-American War, that exhibits art from the 14th to 19th centuries.
Plaza San Jacinto is also a bazar, where local artists exhibit their art for sale.
After you’ve done with everything around the main square, I recommend to walk up the Calle Hidalgo to Casa Blanco enjoying quiet street and colonial architecture. Right around the corner there is hidden little park called Plaza de los Arcangeles. This place is probably the most beautiful in San Angel, which has a lot of greenery, flowers and gorgeous colonial architecture.
The last stop is House of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, which officially is called Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo. Usually there are not a lot of people or sometimes you would be the only visitor there. You can walk through all houses, including the neighboring house of architect Juan O’Gorman.

Thank you for making this video. I’m from the US and lived in San Angel for one summer as an exchange student. (1972) This was so much fun for me to watch because it brought back a lot of wonderful memories. The architecture, the flowers, the food, but most of all, the Mexican people.

San Angel ain't minimalist. Behind those stone walls are big expensive homes, for long time it was the prime neighborhood in Mex City
