Obviously Clyde isn't afraid. Things are very different trying to interact with a new bird on day one when it's flying away from you because it's terrified. I love your videos and I've learned so much from them. I'm really glad you have a Cockatiel. They are wonderful birds.

Clyed is doing great. My Pepper was petrified for 3months, i started to interact with him from the day one, it was so hard to tame him, we couldn't even passed by his cage, his previous owner never handled him, he was caged for a while year, not sure what they did to him. I got him 9 months ago, now he is 2yrs old happy boy.

I was laughing the whole time watching your video. I see your struggles (like accidentally casting the stick too fast) and I can definitely relate😂 I always felt that cockatiels are super cautious and the slight change in speed, angle, and color of everything presented can differ their responses… And that’s the point where I struggled A LOT. Some think that cockatiels are easy but yeah…. there maybe less serious bites but…..

one of my tiels whom i hand reared from seven weeks is a lot easier to work with than my other whom i adopted at about 15 yo. He'd been passed around a time or two and left in his cage covered for a very long time and shows a lot of the same behaiviors i saw in the first Clyde video. I agree Tiels can be hard! I look forward to this series to get help for my "old" man to help improve his life more so than it has already.

All these little struggles seems to be such a common thing with cockatiels. I have one who gives the paw BUT only on his terms. Sometimes he does it perfectly, and other times he flies away as soon as I ask him. And both of mine seem to absolutely love doing things they know will get them in trouble... like destroying my plants or chipping at my door frames despite having tonnes of toys (I always have to make sure all my plants are bird safe). They do their mischievous things together too.

I guess I can't watch your videos on speakers anymore. My cockatiels were SCREAMING when they heard Clyde hahaha! Were constantly checking him out and watching him. My ears are ringing now, but the video was great ♥. I am corious what your cockatiel mix contains, because we give them a selfmade seedmix with 50% low fat seeds and 50% fatty seeds, because they fly so much. I am scared if I take the canary seed or millet out of their normal seedmix they won't have so much energy anymore. We also give TOPS pellets and fresh food tho (although they are a bit picky about their veggies). Lots of love for you and the BirdTricksTeam ♥

I am one of the people who loves the cockatiel content. I've raised hundreds of cockatiels. Their bite is no joke. It's like 3 razor blades. Be happy Clyde is a male. Females can bite into your knuckle. Of course the females have stronger jaws so they can dig out nest cavities but that's small comfort when they've latched on to your finger

Clyde is very cute. ♥ My cockatiels won't step up but they are VERY food driven and even "ask" for food by nibbling the cage wall right next to the center door of the cage and/or saying IIIH exactly when it's 8:30 pm and bedtime. They know the time better than me some days, they're like an alarm clock 😂 They still do some wacky and insecure flying around the living room in our new apartment but hopefully they will be able to navigate better soon

Your cockatiel is so cute, even with the clipped tail. (Of course that’s not a good thing they did). I have 2 caiques and in October I got these 2 beautiful yellow-sided green cheek conures. When I drove to get them it took about 2 hours , my friend went with me. On the way home she got the birds out of their enclosure and put them on my shoulder and they just sat there so content all the way home. Now 5 months later, I let them out of their cage in the morning and they are out most of the day, they’re well behaved and oddly enough they will fly onto my shoulders or on my head but they will not let me touch them with my hands. They won’t step up. I deal with chronic pain, I did start doing target training in the beginning but my pain started getting bad and I slacked off. They are both females and the one would step up good but the other not at all. Now neither of them step up. And it’s been tough getting them to go back in their cage. I just started this in the evening when I put all the birds night-night; I have a whole routine that I’ve always done when having my 1st caique, and they love it. I sit with them for about 20 min. and play soft music preferably Disney, they really respond to that. Then when I leave the room to say goodnight I go over to Lani & Layla’s cage and tickle their little toes, then their belly. Lani responded to this the 1st few nights and Layla didn’t want to have anything to do with it, so 2 nights ago she started coming up to the cage for tickles too. Is that a good sign that they will eventually let me touch them? I also started yesterday to use the target again when they’re up in the morning, I do this while they’re in the cage. Any suggestions would be appreciated and if I’m doing the right thing . Thank you for reading this long post. Good luck with your cockatiel. 😊

Cockatiels can eat veggies btw! Also when you want him to go on your bare hand offer millet at a distance where he has to get on your hand and he will quickly learn that your hand is safe. Also might want to make that mix a bit more crushed up so its smaller pieces and easier for him to eat.

If he wasn't eating it at home, he likely would not have eaten it in the car. Cockatiels are notorious for avoiding new foods and diets. The only way I managed to convert my 'tiel to pellet, was because she was broody at the time (they are very motivated to lay) and she was too hungry to refuse an offer of what looked like millet. So I first converted her to Lafebers finch pellet, which is a pretty identical formula to their cockatiel diet, but it's roughly the size of loose millet seeds. After one container of Finch pellet, we switched her nearly seamlessly to their cockatiel pellets, mixing some in with the finch stuff for several days, and she was on the cockatiel pellets until she died at almost 16 years old. She never transitioned to chop. She would have a bit of whatever fruit we would be eating, but she would not touch vegetables. But at least, I had her on one of the best pellets, per our avian vet, so her diet was fairly balanced, if a bit boring.

(Any help is deeply appreciated, sorry this it kinda out of no where!) I've had my pet parakeet, Flapjack, since December of 2022. This is my first time owning a bird and the only pets I have taken care of are cats, fish, and rats. Currently, it's just three cats and Flapjack. Even though I've never had a bird there are some things as a pet owner you pick up on such as giving them space in the begining. I got Flapjack from a pet store so I knew it would be tough and take longer than usual to gain their trust and yet I still worry. I've tried to keep myself calm and that with time and effort some day Flapjack and I can be best buds, but I'm starting to worry and I freak out over the thought of failure. But I don't want to give up on trying I'm just really bad at doing the whole once every day thing. I have made a few mistakes like letting Flapjack out of their cage I will admit, I'm not proud of it, and, not on purpose, making them freak out and fly around in their cage. I feel like everything I do makes it worse. As of this moment, I can hand-feed them by holding a small piece of spray millet in my fingers or even some seeds. I understand a few body language cues such as puffed feathers or standing on one foot. I'm a sophomore in high school who is usually burnt out from school when I get home. I try my best with talking to Flapjack but I never know what to say, my mind goes blank. Other times I'm ranting to Flapjack. I sing to them sometimes or read a book, although I haven't done that for a few months. I've made sure Flapjack has everything they need in a cage. Some other things I want to mention either because I don't know what it means or if it might help are that Flapjack would bite at his hammock (that's what I call it might be called something else) made of seagrass. Flapjack used to bite through them so much I had to keep getting more but then they stopped for a while and started again recently. (Flapjack also lives in my room with me btw) Flapjack sometimes will stand on their perch and flap their wings a lot. I also have a black sheet that goes around to cage for when it's time to go to bed. Compared to when I first got Flapjack to now, there is a huge difference. I just was hoping anyone who knew more about birds could help with my problem. I hope to be able to pet and hold Flapjack. Have I already lost Flapjack's trust for good? I deeply appreciate any advice/help.

I took this advise, everyone else said to leave the bird in the cage for a few days. I've never left a bird in a cage when it isnt bed time. I wanted him to know straight away that the whole room is for him. I put carrier on the floor door open and started tidying up while talking softly. He came out after half an hour and I offered some millet and he took it but very scared of hands. I sat on the floor for about 2 hours just showing him toys and pretending to play with them and he sat quiet not moving but not freaking out or breathing rapidly. I offered millett again and after about 4 hours he was on my hand. Put him to bed, next day put my hand in and he went for it a few times so i just spoke softly and left the cage door open. I kept trying every hour or so and eventually he came out on his own and just sat on the perch outside of the cage. Three days of offering a hand with millet later, hes on my hand, head, feet and trying to fly but cant because previous owner cut his wings. No more millet for a while but hes doing really well now and whistles when hes awake in the morning so he can get out of his cage.

Hi. I have an affinity with most all animals. I'm 58 though and my next animal friend could possibly out live me. So I'm thinking of a preloved pet. It's more difficult as like us they have "baggage". Avians are a whole new world to me. I really like Mcaws and cockatoos. I'm thinking to buy an older one, without too many owners in it's past as the break bond baggage is harder to overcome with all creatures. I'm a committed owner in respect of time spending... I'm on the cusp of a three way choice. A camel or s parrot . Or nothing... But the last option is a shame as I can provide the right creature a loving compassionate companionship. What can I do. ? What will any of us do at this age when we find interspecies interactions so fulfilling, and when providing loving understanding care to any creature is something the world really needs? Adopt a human ? ,😂

@@melissatrader8528 oh I think you'd be fine with a bird, they are so in tuned with their owners, they bond with you, training, and lots of love, i wouldn't worry about your condition , they are very loving.

If you have any rescues nearby, I can't recommend fostering enough as a way to get to know birds and how they fit in with your lifestyle. And new foster homes are always in demand!

I second fostering or birdsitting for a week at least to get a feel of what being around birds is like.

I don't understand why people think it's okay to clip birds' wings. When I got a new cockatiel, the seller clipped a wing before I could tell her don't clip. Since one wing was clipped, she had to do the next one. Why, why oh why! Soar high, Clyde!

The main breeder here does because she had someone get two tiels without clipping. That night she got a message that one got scared, flew into a wall, then sadly died that same night😢. I feel like this could have happened either way but she does see it as a way of protecting her birds that she hand raises. I'm on the fence but this story just breaks my heart

Birds need to fly for so many reasons. That is the way they get around. It is much safer for them to fly then not.

The food you are trying to give him is not suitable. This is one type of grain. You have to buy food for the bird, various grains, vitamins and dried fruit pieces.

Lol... if Clyde will touch you first day he isn't much project😄 get a project that bashes itself into the cage from freaking out just because you are in the same room and then educate us about project birds.

I don't understand what the video has to do with the topic of bringing a new bird home....I don't think you should start with clicker training when you bring a new bird home....a bit of topic if you ask me and not what people expect to see...
