Thanks Neil. I’ve always heard “Never run a diesel out of fuel” so thankfully I haven’t. But I almost did 2 days ago on my L3301. I was using the backhoe for a long time at high RPM with my back to the fuel gauge. When I finally turned around, the needle was well into the red. I honestly didn’t know what to do if I had run it dry but now I know! Thanks again.

Was taught this many years ago by my father. Back in the day we had an old Cat dozer. Those old ones you had to crack the lines like Neil stated. Some of the newer ones have a bleeder valve that can be cracked open while cranking. I would guesstimate this Kubota does also. The old advise of never run a diesel out of fuel still applies.

Well, it used to be more of a deal, or so I've heard. Never ran any engine out of fuel unless winterizing it, for example (gasoline only, never diesel). Thanks, Neil, a very useful and timely topic. Another fuel topic I've heard a LOT about and would like to see you cover are issues with cold weather diesel fueling and all the things people do for the variety of condtions encountered because of the cool-to-frigid spectrum.

many of the older ones have a bleeder on the injection pump that you crack open and then a plunger pump that you manually pump until the fuel comes out the bleeder; as far as the 30k psi lines, sometimes those lines are not reusable once they're installed, so if you crack them loose then you may have to replace them. at 30k psi, the fuel leak may not be easily visible and can cut right through skin.

I once ran my rtv1140 out of fuel when sitting on a slope. Locate the mechanical fuel pump located on the engine close to the injection pump. There is a lever on the fuel pump that you must pump many times in order to prime the pump. You should be able to feel a little difference in pressure when there is fuel flowing at the pump.

My main tractor is a 1986 Kubota L2550, a 30hp 3 cylinder diesel. I deliberately ran it out of fuel soon after I bought it to get a feel for just where 'empty' really was on the fuel gauge. It was a bit below the 'empty' line. I refilled the tank and opened the bleed valve on the injection pump by hand (it's a small knob or wheel). I cranked the engine, it started and ran badly. But over the next minute or so it cleared the air from the lines and ran better and better. Once it was running well I closed that valve and went back to work. It was that easy. So....it's best to avoid running any equipment out of fuel. Even a chainsaw. But it's not a big deal, as Neil showed here. Only truly ancient diesels can be a headache to bleed.

Wish I watched this before I watched another youtube video some years ago. I opened the air bleeder on my L3940 after changing the fuel filter and it WOULD NOT start, after nearly killing the battery I found a video about cracking an injector line, which I did. I got it to start but I "spun" one of the injectors causing it to be out of time with the rest of the injectors resulting in a few HP loss and smoky exhaust. The dealer spun it back and timed it best they could, but still not what it was.

A new "twist" on this problem. I ran out of fuel by a blockage of debris at my primary fuel filter. After correcting that and insuring a good flow as I put the filter back, I still couldn't start it. I read my L3901 manual and watched several videos including your video. I followed the bleed directions but It still wouldn't start despite multiple attempts. The following day, after more failures, I removed the screw from the filter canister, activated the fuel pump by turning on the key, and watched fuel slowly rise preceded for 20 seconds by many small air bubbles. I continued this until the air bubbles almost stopped, put the screw back in, and it started up after a couple short turnover efforts. I have never seen any suggestions for removing the screw. One problem down. Now I have to get the stuff out of my tank. Do you have any videos for a DIY attempt to do I need a pro?

An old farmer buddy taught me never to let the tank go below half, esp. in the cold, to prevent condensation on the inside of the tank. My L3901 takes 5 gallons when the needle is at 1/2, or 6 gallons if it's anywhere below that. And like my sales weenie told me when I bought it, "at 11 gallons this tractor will last longer than you will."

Biggest thing to know if you are on an older tractor is that once the engine stops, and you suspect you have run out of fuel, don't continue to attempt to start the engine. Open the cap and see if the tank is dry (on most older tractors you can see the bottom of the fuel tank). If it's dry, add fuel, then start cranking. It will usually start after 3 or 4 attempts if you haven't run it bone dry by attempting to crank it initially before adding fuel.

If we are talking about modern equipment; No Spill fuel cans are the only modern ones I’ve found that are worth using. The “safety” systems on most cans should be illegal, I fully believe they are responsible for more irresponsible practices than the old cans, for you could actually use the nozzles on the old cans, the new ones you pretty much have to take the cap off to use and not take 10 minutes to empty. My solution to most modern cans is to bring a big funnel.

I'm not sure about smaller diesels, but when I ran equipment for a summer for a construction company, the guy that trained me did say it's hard on them to turn them off without idling them for at least a minute after doing a fair amount of work with them. Something about them continuing to build up heat for a short while after you shut them off, so the idling reduced the temp it would build from. Not sure how much truth there is to that, though... I'm not that knowledgeable about diesel. I've just always idled my tractor for 30-60 seconds before turning it off as a safety. That said, I would imagine it's hard on any kind of engine to go from a high RPM to 0 like that.
@trevorhorvath2112

@@Zurar since diesel engines run at higher rpms than gas engines and the fuel has a higher ignition temperature. If you don't idle the machine after running on high for a good amount of time you can cause the pistons to lock up because of all the pressure they have built up at 15000 rpms.

It's great on flat ground, but going through woods, over stumps, on Hills, not so much. And I had a 23 horse B without a cab a while ago that I got very used to so it wasn't me. It felt to me like the cab was too big for the tractor. Felt top heavy, and I had a few sketchy two-wheel situations over the 200 hours I owned it. I do mostly loader work, the b2650 replaced a t300 bobcat. I needed something that could lift a thousand pounds. I got a little smaller tractor so I could still have air conditioning and all the fancy shit on the t300. I had looked at the l2501 when I originally bought the B, but I wanted something with no emissions and a cab. To get a L with a cab requires emissions. So I got the B. I now have an l2501 with the roof. It's on my channel, along with the old B. It feels more stable, wider, heavier. Feels Like A Better Built tractor. Feels more to me like what a tractor should be, if you've ever run old equipment you know what I mean. More utilitarian, less frilly shit to break once the warranty expires. Well, I’m new school. 2016 BX25 If I did run out of gas I would just fill it . Then if it didn’t start ... I would start with the research... I didn’t know about the old school stuff.

It sure is sad to see that you may dump fuel down over the hood with that make of tractor!! Maybe the manufacturer will reconsider moving it to the rear, behind the driver seat. Keep the videos coming!! 😎

Maybe you can get one of those fancy Kubota spring loaded vented cans. I have one and it works great! Should I have my dealer send you one! 😂

There's a spill well around my filler cap on my B2601 with a drain down tube leading to below the tractor. Ask me how I know. LOL

Neil - or who ever - I have a L3940 tractor - after changing the fuel filter sometimes - or running out of fuel because i am so hardheaded - ahahaha -- turning the fuel off to the filter - even allowing the fuel to run out while tightening the housing to get out air bubbles - and also opening the air valve - it still will not run - until I crack the first two injectors - hose is not stopped up - I checked - ahahaha - whats up with that - sometimes it does it - sometimes not - crazy odd chit - farming for 40 + years - the nearest dealer to me is 50 miles away and says just to crack the injectors - which i do not like doing - they are old school country boys as am i -- ahahahahaha

Running it out of fuel is one thing, its when some idiot fills it up with gas instead of diesel and goes as far as actually starting the machine or vehicle and driving it, then it gets expensive.

I know the answer...add fuel!! Turn key to start, put in gear and mow down the person who last you the tractor and used up all that fuel. Now change into the orange jumpsuit and find you a new cell mate aka girlfriend in flip flops and enjoy that 6x12 cell for the remaining years you have to live on this planet or until they pull the lever and 2 million volts zap thru your body at the speed of light! Bet they dont use up your gas ever again.!!

if the person did not know about making sure the tractor was full and the borrower / user needed to know it also - then the owner was as much at fault - people are more like stupid animals sometimes -- ahahahahaha

It's probably better that most of these mugs still think running out of diesel is a big rigamaroll. Now 1/2 these jokers are gonna run em till empty in the next week or so.
