What to do when your dragon fruit is turning yellow

You might observe that your dragon fruit turns yellow. This usually happens during the summer season or during the growth cycle. I noticed this yellowing of my dragon fruit last year and did not do anything about it. My dragon fruit eventually turned back to green. This year I decided to tackle the situation. I found out through research that applying epson salt will alleviate this problem. Epson salt is basically magnesium sulfate which may help plants grow greener. It help increase chlorophyll production and improve phosphorus and nitrogen uptake all of which help the plant yield flowers and eventually fruits. It is recommended to start applying epson salt a couple of weeks before summer/hot weather to prevent the yellowing of the plants. I hope this is helpful to you. Cheers.

David there was one viewer (from Spain) that uses 40 percent shade to correct the yellowing. I think this will work as well. There is also a grower that has his farm in desert type location in Mexico that uses epson salt on his dragon fruit. He says it helps his plants survive the desert environment.

I’ve found the dragon tells you it’s in too much sun as it’ll grow and bend towards shade and send aerial roots those directions. Also found micro nutrient foliar to be good for correcting branch coloring as it is applying directly to problem area vs needing to go soil to roots to trunk to branch.
@wilsonwilson3439

Magnesium can certainly help. The key point people are missing is that the yellowing is due to the fact that more nutrients are being utilized by the plant than is available to the roots. Periods of intense sunlight (high summer) etc. The plants (any plants) will start to cannibalize their leaves for more nutrients if they cannot access enough from the soil.

Hi, I think it's the same thing that happens to my pitayas here in Malaga, Spain. The problem here is the summer sun and the high temperatures, I do not know if the solar intensity in California is the same as here but I think so. I solve that problem by putting a 40% shade because the pitaya grows in nature under the shade of the trees. But if your method works I will try it. Thanks for your videos, greetings from spain and sorry for my english

mesudalapeluda2 Wow, it is nice to hear from somebody all the way from Spain. You may be right that is it could also be because of the intense exposure to the summer sun. I will find out soon if it will fix the yellowing. By the way your English is fine. Thank you for your input and if the epson salt do not fix it, I will surely do install some type of shade. You can adjust the quantities as needed depending on how much soil volume you need as long as you keep the same ratio of the components. Thanks for the info. I wonder, is it possible that the dragonfruit are getting sun burned? I don't know. This is my first year having dragonfruit. I have some which are still very young and just received some which seem almost as young, but are a little droopy from the trip. So I'm learning.

Hello. From my experience dragon fruit gets damaged if the temperature reaches 100 degrees farenheit and higher. The branches will looese its green color and turn white. During summer when there is longer daylight hours some branches will turn yellow just like in this video. One of the viewers said that because of longer daylight hours there is more plant activity like production of new branches, flowers buds, and fruits so the plant will transfer nutrients from one part to other parts where it is needed. I don't use epson salt anymore. I just allow the plant to turn yellow and it seems to be just fine. The plant still produces flowers and fruits. Plant the "droopy" young cutting/plant in a shaded area until it recuperates. Usually when cuttings used are not the matured ones they tend to droop until they recover. Best wishes on your dragon fruit plants. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. Cheers

Hey, I would like to know more about it. How effective is this? How many days the effect of adding Epsom salts lasts? What should be the frequency of adding epsom salt, (given mid March to mid June in India I.e. 3 month period is really hot for plants). Also I would like to know if you have any other ideas on developing natural ‘partial shade’ situation by adding non-invasive root system trees in between dragon fruit plantation!
@sackboymahalo
@sackboymahalo 6 жыл бұрын
Smit Dedhia when I used it last year it alleviated the yellowing although it did not totally took the yellowing out. I only apply it once a year since we only have mild temperature rise during summer in my area. This year I applied the epson salt earlier (10 days ago) and it appears to be lessening the yellowing as compared to last year. I think it is better to apply it 2 weeks earlier of the anticipated hot season. I've read of people using epson salt as foliar spray (2 tablespoon per gallon of water) every month during the hot months or every other week (1 tablespoon per gallon of water). I've seen a video of a grower using Chaca tree as a natural partial shade. In fact he uses the Chaca tree as his posts where his dragon fruit plants grow. Dragon fruit in nature climbs trees and most probably trees that grow in your area will work as a natural shade (just make sure it is just partial shade). The roots of the dragon fruit do not go really deep so it will probably not be affected by the root system of the trees you're planning to use. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for watching. Cheers.

sackboymahalo thank you sir, very informative. I have a few more questions actually. If I could get your contact details, I would be able to learn many things from you. My email address in smitdedhia@outlook.com Doubts: 1.Can Epsom salt be used in organic farming. (I have read many articles but have mixed feeling about magnesium Sulphate & commercially available Epsom salt) 2. I am planning for a Row plantation technique (like in vineyard for grapes), rather than pole and ring trellis technique. I am confused with what can be the average weight of dragon fruit plant after maturity. I wanted to find out the holding capacity of the trellis. In your video, it’s a pole trellis and tyre on top as a ring, so is tyre able to sustain the weight of four dragon fruit plants? ( I have read in an article that mature dragon fruit tree can weigh over 100 kg, that means weight on tyre will be about 400 kgs?)
@sackboymahalo
@sackboymahalo 6 жыл бұрын
Smit Dedhia i think the best person/organization that can answer the question about can epson salt be used in organic farming is your local Department of Agriculture or if you're planning to export then the local Department of Agriculture of where your exporting to. I recommend having your soil tested and analyzed to determine if it is magnesium and sulfur deficient. Doing this will probably tell you exactly what other elements are present or missing in your soil as well. As far as how much a mature dragon fruit plant can weigh and can your trellis system hold that weight, you can control that since you can trim off branches as needed. If you're planning to use tires, get the ones that the sidewalls are thicker/stronger as compared to the ones that are lighter, softer and easier to bend. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for watching. Cheers.

Hello. In the video I followed the directions on the back of the epson salt bag. I will say about 1 tablespoon per plant if they are matured. I do not use epson salt anymore. So did the leaves/branches turned green afterwards?
@sackboymahalo
@sackboymahalo 4 жыл бұрын
Hello. Yes the branches eventually turned green although it turned yellow again come summer time maybe because of longer exposure to sunlight (longer days, shorter nights). I noticed that the branches that are exposed to direct sunlight are more prone to yellowing and the branches that have been shaded (covered) by other branches stayed green. Branches that are vertical (new branches that are standing up) and pointing down stayed green while branches that are horizontal are prone to yellowing. I still don't know how to completely eliminate the yellowing. Adding a shade might help which I personally will not do. I will make a video once I find an alternative cure to the yellowing. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers.
