What to do when your polishing pad stalls during a car detail

Mike Phillips and Todd Helme from RUPES take you down the rabbit hole of pad stall and how to correct it.
1) Identify if the problem is momentary pad stall or constant pad stall (if it is the latter, downsize tool, switch tool movement, or consider different technique.)
2) Increase tool speed temporarily in areas of stall (mindful of pad heat retention)
3) Increase down pressure temporarily in areas of stall (mindful of pad heat retention)

Its a good idea also to produce machines with more torque more power , and not so easy to stall in the future.

Everyone is different , I have compounded polished and aoi'ed infrequently over the last several years, but still get pad stall with griots g9 & g21 sometimes. They are pretty powerful tools, and I am good with hand tools. The only one I have that doesn't stall is the flex 3401, but it gets hot as f! Even using it lightly over longer periods( 3d speed in a hurry).

When is RUPES coming out with a battery operated D/A? I am holding out. If not within a year, I may consider a battery operated FLEX. My PC 7424 XP is ready to bite the dust.

I'm having pad stall, I'm using hex logic 6.5 pads from chemical guys on a 6 inch back plate. I've tried powering through but sometimes that's not enough. I'm wondering if I'm not changing pads enough, putting too much compound on. I'm used to rotary gear driven machines that this wasn't an issue.

Another thing you can do to address stalling - switch to a rotary. I think all this DA stuff is overrated.

i was hoping they would mention the rotary as another option lol! but they are selling the Mille , ;-) with a rotary you can change the angle, lift a few degees, have overlaping wool pad to get in the contour,etc......

@@danmorrissette4814 I haven't had the slightest problem with a rotary, and my only "training" was YT, but I am only doing light correction. Once at a detailing store they guy looked at me in shocked disbelief when I told him I was using a rotary. He tried REALLY hard to talk me out of it, and told me how he had burned through the paint on a Porsche, and he was very experienced. I ignored him.
