What to do with a REALLY COOL BOX when you're trying to declutter

Decluttering can be going great, and then a REALLY COOL BOX arrives in the mail! What is a creative soul supposed to do other than keep the box?
I like a cool box as much as (or more than) anyone else, but I've had to set some guidelines for myself to know whether I should keep it.

So nice to be in a community who appreciates a “good box” 😊 junk drawers are also great places that need a “good box” for coins, keys, wallets, receipts, rubber bands and clips for chip bags, air freshener replacements, stuff that otherwise would be rolling around the drawer!

Oho, I finally get it! This method puts evolutionary pressure on the box collection. Every time you ask, is there one I like less than this, the box collection evolves from “cute” to “really cute” to “super cute” to “superlatively cute”! Can’t wait to have a collection of superlatively cute boxes 😂

I can’t go past a good box, but I particularly love iPhone boxes. I use them in the junk drawer or in our caravan to store bits and pieces. My husband knows me too well…. If he buys some new gadget that comes in a small solid box, he says “You’ll want this!” So like a cat or a toddler, I do get more enjoyment out of playing with the box! 😂

Kon Mari said that electronic items come in boxes of the size that are useful to organise ckntents of drawers. I keep 'useful boxes' for a week or a fortnight, no longer. If I haven't thought of where I could use that box by then, I'll ask my husband if he needs it, then it has to go to trash. G Ire

When I was little we lived across a hospital because my bro. had asthma and every once in a while he needed a shot of adrenaline to be able to breathe...hang on, there's a box story here...the nuns that ran the hospital knew us well. They usually had a couple of clear plastic boxes to give us. Little ones, (the kind with hinges that actually open and close with your thumbs) different ones but no bigger than 3 inches. My bro. and I kept our "treasures" in them and displayed them in our "secret" drawers which had our own tiny lock that our dad had installed on them just for fun. Every once in a while we could convince the other one to open the drawer and allow each other to gaze at the other person's "treasures". Some were sea shells, colorful peaces of glass, cool bottle caps, a couple of marbles, etc. Was that a little peace of heaven, you ask me? I say YES!

Definitely a cat! XD I forgot that is another hindrance of getting rid of boxes. If I don't do so with the speed of light, then it will live on the floor for at least a month, until the cats get bored with it... (sometimes it takes longer than that... we've had a huge box just as a cat house in the living room for about a year during the pandemic ... )

I had literally tore apart a big very cute subscription box a couple days ago. I kept it, even though it was crashed from shipping. But it was adorable. Finally I decided to let it go so this time I tore it into many pieces so it would for better in the trash and no going back. If I had not, I would still have that big adorable crushed box trying to save it for something. I also canceled the subscription. I need to be more intentional about my purchases rather than paying a bunch of money for random monthly surprises to figure out something to do with. SERIOUSLY!

Oh yeah. Those iPhone boxes are Uh.Maze.Ing. I’ve got one in a drawer with my old, backup, iPhone in it. Though at this point that thing probably just needs to go, because I’m somewhat dubious that an iPhone4 will function as anything other than a doorstop, or MAYBE a really large iPod! I do have a place for gift boxes, and it would likely go there. I agree that when I had an attic, those tended to start falling all over the place because I kept too many of them. Also, life is easier now that I’ve been empty nested and don’t have to anticipate sudden wrapping emergencies on a weekly if not daily basis. LOL (LOL about the pic of you adoring your box, Dana!! During the konmari whirlwind, the one thing I did take away was her suggestion to use whatever items you already had on hand to organize. Since I suffer from chronic cute box syndrome, I had Many a cute box onhand to organize my dresser drawers. That was as far as I got, but I have kept it up and do enjoy folding my clothes to make them look neat which I still can't believe I do. I wish I could capture that motivation and apply it to other areas but no. Years later I still have the messy pile on TOP of the dresser etc and spend my life trying to get motivated to do anything about it. Anyway, I had No idea there were other cute box savers out there, feels nice not to be suffering alone at least.

I like that principle that the limits of the designated space determines whether you get to keep that item. Where people come unstuck especially in the example of clothes, is that they then start shoving more stuff into the space in an untidy fashion, because you can't fit as much stuff into a tidy organised space. When I decluttered the junk drawer in our hallway cabinet, there was much more space so then my husband shoved a bunch of junk in there. So I got rid of the hallway cabinet and replaced it with a table with no drawers.

Hey B B, About clutter blindness... I totally know what you mean. Walking through the visible spaces in my home, it doesn't look that bad to me (at least considering where I started from) but I have security cameras, and when I peek into the room from the angle of the cameras, OMG, it looks like a total mess! Also, in my garage, there are very cluttered, disorganized shelves with all sorts of unorganized things on them. Walking by, or going out to get something, I don't really notice. But when I pull in and see them thru the lense of my dash cam, oh geeez, it makes you think SLOBS must live here. So yes, good topic. I hope she covers it in one of her future videos.

Take a video of that pile and the room it is in. When your eye is viewing the camera lens panning your problem area, you see more detail than what just a photo can show you. I get shocked just how bad things really are and it prompts me to want to act to change it.

i friggin love this decluttering guidance. Im a magpie for boxes, present bags, stationery etc etc. I have been slowly decluttering my house using your theories and its been life changing for me!!!! I really identify with the do one thing at a time rule, as i often found myself making more mess in the process of cleaning and getting super fatigued and bored in the process. Now im getting further than i ever did even if its not all done at once. Love you and your vids Dana K

If the “cool box” is pretty I put it with my gift wrap and actually use it on the next holiday.

A butter box cut up into cards can be great to-do list paper! So many boxes are plain white on the inside and clean. I might have a problem. But thanks to these ladies videos that i just started watching, I've thrown out a drawer of random "cards" and envelopes.

Ok - cutting them up for a use is a good idea- DO IT NOW! Then take them to the place where you keep those things and put them there - NOW! I’m starting to train myself to stop hanging onto stuff to burden my future-self with a never ending ‘still haven’t gotten THAT done, but surely I won’t always be a hopeless mess and I WILL get to it’ pile. Acknowledging the reality of limits - space - also time & energy. And focusing on the joy of what I actually can/do get done in a less cluttered space 😊

I would never think this love of cool boxes, would be exposed and yet here it is. I totally relate and have my own little collection of neat boxes. I even love boxes in wood, metal and any medium. It's hard to just put any old thing in these favored boxes so often they remain empty. I am trying to change my approach. Thanks for talking about this Dana

OK as I have a box hoarding issue. I am saving these boxes to declutter and in the mean time they are the clutter. LOL Thanks for the video today and time to part with those boxes as they are not filled up or take it there now (recycling )

If an immediate use comes to mind, I'll go with that instinct. That box would go (assuming space) directly into my chocolate making cabinet to use the next time I give out sweets or filled with a craft supply housed in something that needs replacing, but that's me. If no other use comes to mind, it's gone and forgotten, no guilt.

I had a bunch of those for years, along with baby shower gift bags (that baby shower for me was literally 17 years ago y'all) and finally I put them all in a box for charity so someone else can freak out with the gorgeous boxes and bags. I'm down to one plastic container for ALL THINGS Gifts. It feels amazing.

That IS a REALLY COOL BOX! I have that problem with my tea tins. They are so cute and useful and I worry that if I put them in the recycling then I will come up with a need for it. I now have a photo box that I no longer needed for photos where I put all of my cool containers that I might need someday and if I need to put something in the recycling because there isn't enough room, I remind myself that no one has ever had a near-death experience because I recycled some packaging. (yet anyway ;) )
