Had a root canal yesterday. Procedure was painless, and more than 12 hours after, I don't have much pain just little throbbing here and there. I'm avoiding hard foods.

I just had a root canal done, and I’m very angry. It may be good to get a root canal done in the long run, but don’t let anybody tell you it’s a small whatever procedure don’t allow them to sugar coat it. Post op expect your pain threshold to grow. Make sure you get pain meds and antibiotics. I didn’t get prescribed neither, make sure you eat minimal (soft foods only), have good oral hygiene, and REST. The first 72 hours are brutal before you start adjusting. If you can sleep threw most of those hours, your experience won’t be that bad. Also make sure your dentist has a good reputation following that person, the cost to make sure your work is done right is all worth it. Do your research and don’t be afraid. Dental hygiene is important in ones life. You can do this! I hope this helps, make sure to check up with your dentist if any concerns.

This comment is so true. Currently going through this. Had my root canal on Wednesday. I wasn’t given any prescription pain medication or antibiotics even though my canal had to be done in two parts due to more severe infected tooth. Was told to take ibuprofen over the counter. By Thursday morning I had to call and ask them to write a prescription for antibiotics and pain. I was given the bare minimum pain medication (ibuprofen 800mg every 8 hours) that only lasted for two hours. My Walt Friday morning, my face was so swollen I’m that I couldn’t close the side of my mouth and my eye was starting to close. Worst experience ever. If I had know this, I could have told them to just remove the tooth and give me antibiotics for the rest. Sad part is, they didn’t explain any of this to me, they told me that I would have immediate relief and minimal swelling after the procedure

I told the dentist to remove the tooth but he insisted on a 600$ rootcanal treatment And now i'm in even more pain than i was before with 600$ less to spend.

@@peachqtpi thats cheap.. I just had one done, My root canal was 1300$. I was told it was one of my only options. It was either get a filling which might not rid the pain. or get a root canal and the pain will be gone I was told theres no nerve..

@@nobody3888 hi... i did the same thing and same exact price but my doctor put in a pin post core between the rootcanal and my crown... sadly he told me, this will last maybe 10 years... but i can not bite hard on it or eat sticky foods lol... its my front tooth small incissor #7... so i will b careful... maybe i will live on protein drinks lol

@@peachqtpi Some times these root canals don't work. I always recommend going to a Endodontist dentist, who is a root canal specialist. I had a root canal 2 weeks ago. I chipped a bottom mole tooth in the back by chewing on ice. Last time i ever chew on ice. My regular dentist wanted to do the root canal. But i told him i'm going to a Endodontist. I went to Dr Steven Lipner in NYC. He's one of the top Endodontists in NY. Dr Lipner told me the main thing a dentist must use, when doing the root canal is a microscope. On my root canal, he said the canal split and he only saw this on the microscope. He said an x-ray wouldn't have seen this. That's why i tell people, if you use a regular dentist for the root canal, ask the dentist if he uses a microscope. If he doesn't, do not use him for the root canal. A great dentist is worth their weight in gold-- and worth every penny we pay them. Tooth pain is indescribable agony. The anxiety people feel when they hear the words 'root canal' or 'tooth extraction' can be off the charts, so overwhelming (root canal has terrifyingly bad PR, which is a mystery that it endures in 2022) and so a gentle highly experienced dentist or oral surgeon calming them and reassuring them of minimal pain is EVERYTHING. A good dentist can even administer the local anaesthetic so that it feels like a sting followed by pressure-- which is not the same thing as real pain. Absolutely wonderful how far medical and scientific technology has come. When you throw a warm, patient, highly competent doctor into the mix...well, it's the best possible scenario. Great dentists and their assistants are true unsung heroes.

A dentist gave me a root canal without telling me. He didn’t offer me anything for after care... no pain killers...no antibiotics...nothing! Before knowing what he did..I went back to his office.. I saw another dentist there. I went for another filling... the Dentist filed down my teeth next to the root canal.. now I have a toothache. I can’t tell which is causing me discomfort...the root canal or the filed down teeth. I went to see a new dentist who was hasty to pull my teeth with the root canal. I just want the tooth with the root canal out. And I might have to get work on the other tooth that was filed down. It’s sad that I can’t find a dentist I can trust.

Me too i had the last one on the list and they had to remove dead tissue from my gums and between the jaw bone and gums. Everything was great yesterday after the procedure and today I am sooo sore. They gave me tramadol and I've been swilling warm salt water as well as brushing and flossing

@@ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293 Hi - the treatment itself was absolutely pain free. The only thing that hurt a bit was the endodontist tapping on it before she started, to confirm that it needed it. Not horrible though. Once she numbed me up I didn't feel a thing. Before she started the work she kept testing to see if I felt anything, and gave me a few injections. After I realized it wasn't going to hurt, I relaxed and started watching the procedure out of interest. I have no fear of it at all now. I had some residual pain in that tooth (only when flossing next to it) for a good 6 months afterward, but it's since resolved and I have zero pain. I was told that even though the tooth itself is dead, the structures beneath it can still be "annoyed" for a while and cause some pain. That pain is NOTHING compared to pre-RCT though!!

@@andreav2125 finally a comment from not too long ago. I am having this done on a little over a week and I am so scared. I don’t have any pain in the tooth but my dentist says it needs a rtc. I am nervous of the pain during and after! I’ve also seen that they can fail and cause even more pain.

Some distressing posts. My root canal treatment was carried out by a specialist endodontist, and although it was a challenging tooth, I had no pain whatsoever afterwards.

Hi Ashleigh. I'm not sure if you've already had your RCT but the injections are nothing: they're the tiniest sharpest little needles and they aren't stuck too far in; they just feel like a little sting, like when a mosquito bites you and don't realise till too late, or like when you unexpectedly touch a sharp leaf on a shrub in the garden...that sort of sting. And as you're going numb it feels like someone's pushing on the roof of your mouth with two very strong fingers. I hope you won't worry about injections. Doctors are GREAT at giving them these days.

Really weird, for me, they killed my tooth and some weeks later they filled it with something and it looked normal. The thing is that 2 weeks after that (now) it feels weird all the time and it hurts when I bite into something.

Mine was the other way around. I had an exposed nerve and I didn’t go to school this week because of the pain. They did the root canal but they made me high so it was awesome. Now I’m in some pain from keeping my mouth open for an hour, but overall feels way better. It was my third root canal. I got 2 when I was 10, and one today and I’m 14.

I had a root canal about 5 weeks ago, and I was really expecting it to take the pain away. Boy was I wrong. It used to hurt when I bit down on something hard. Now it hurts if I ever-so-slightly tap it with a fingernail. I don't dare bite on it, obviously. A tiny, soft little tap on it sends shooting pain into the roots. The root canal obviously didn't work. So now I suppose I'll have to pay for it to be done incorrectly, yet again. FML

I just got mine yesterday well the first part at least and believe it or not it hurt but not that bad the worst part is the numbing needle because they put that right in the nerve feel like it sticks you all the way down to jaw after that I didint feel much but still have to go back lol I’m scared af too

God, I hope not! I’m having a retreatment on the same tooth and hope they remove any missed roots and can recrown what’s left. I wonder how often a retreatment needs an implant. Go in once, fix it right the first time and let me live!

Do you go with same or different doctor? I just had a retreatment yesterday and going to check again next week.. Wow the pain starts after 12 hours crazy knife pointy pain til now, hard to sleep at night.. I was given painkillers but I didn't used it, lol, enjoy the pain, I don't like the side effect of painkillers... I went with a different doctor btw, was referred by a previous doctor to an endodontist, my first root canal treatment wasn't with an endodontist back in 2008 and maybe she have missed 1 canals or didn't fill it in deep enough that have been causing problems recently in 2020 :(

Let me save you all some time. Having a root canal can take anywhere between 45 minutes and 21/2 hrs depending on how well the procedure goes, and how damaged your tooth is and how much infection is present. It's a LOT of Lidocane injections spaced apart at different stages of the procedure. And it still feels like having a filling without anesthesia. And you can expect discomfort for at least a week. (just the number of needle pricks in your mouth.....) I would NEVER do that again. Flippers are cheaper and an extraction is much less painful.

Has anyone out there still had pain weeks after a root canal? I had a abscessed tooth I neglected but no pain. I finally...after a few years get my root canal done and am in pain now. For the first 2 weeks I felt swollen in my cheek and eye, but now it has also progressed into pain. Even my skin hurts on my cheek. I think it could be some kind of nerve issue.

Im 15. I had a root canal on my front tooth a few months ago after a fall resulting in a fracture. I didnt get any pain after the surgery but it is extremely sensitive to air so I have to keep my mouth closed at all times. A few months after the root canal i realized i had several cracks in my tooth and any biting down is alot of pain

I’m only 14, I got a root canal procedure done today. The needle they used to numb me, obviously helped to feel no pain after the procedure but now that it’s gone I can barely sleep. It hurts a lot where my tooth is and it feels kind of numb on the left side of my mouth (down the corners of my mouth). The heartbeat feeling is also there as well. Has this happened to anyone? How long will it last? I can’t take it.

Im also 14 yrs old, and my dentist explains this why. You should go to your dentist because it might have a very bad infections inside. If you will wait for a long time it might spread and might undergo surgery. Practice having no sweet, and oral hygiene and changing lifestyle/way of eating/diet. How are you now?

my old 17 i get root canal huh because my child days in grade 4 the class all childrens checkup by dentist so my two teeth drilled but after filling i eat chocolate biscut huh i.m children i dont know about that but after 6 years time has come possibly😩😐1st molar and another side 1st molar huh only this teeth are hurt me 💔 ❤BUT I HOPE SOMEDAY I CAN REGROW MY TEETH OR REGENERATE❤❤❤❤❤love your works sientice please doo❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I got mine a week ago, my dentist didn’t even warn me of the pain I ended up crying at night until dawn and had to wait til the morning to buy me my own medication. The rct didn’t hurt but three days later I was feeling so much pain. I had to do deep research to know what to do and which medicine is best.

Dan Livni no lockdown was in effect soon after I underwent root canal.cracked fragment removed also filling.Dr advised for crown after fixing a post.waiting to return home and do the procedure

After a root canal can I just have the tooth filled does it have to be crowned. On a molar tooth a corner was broken out. Just a small section. Though the tooth never hurt I was told I needed a root canal. I had the procedure done and was scheduled for two weeks to come in and have the existing tooth shaved down and fitted for a crown. Something came up and they could not get me in for over a month. When I phoned them we went over the cost. The root canal was paid in full and I was supposed to pay an additional 700 the crown the day I receive it, but I'm told over the phone I will need $1,600 I said no. The root canal has already been paid for it was $700. And then I was told they are aware of that but the crown is an additional 1600. I argue that that was not what I was told and we got started. So now I don't want to go back there and every other dental place I call nearby are anywhere from 1200 to 1600 just for a crown. Yet if I call and ask for the full procedure needing a root canal with a crown I'm being told total price I'm being told $1600 to $1800. So basically I'm getting charged because they didn't get to do the root canal?? I'm not a dentist but I really believe the root canal was unnecessary to begin with. I'm wondering if I can have a band put around a tooth and it filled.

Cheryl what state are you in? Get the crown. You should be able to get a crown for 1000 from a good dentist.

I had no pain and no swelling. Only a slightly discomfort with cold food and drinks. So why it was neccessary to do a root canal. There was a cavity for sur but very slight pain and no swelling.

Mine hurt like hell when I drank cold water. My insurance didn't cover a crown so I'm stuck with a filling. It cracked so I had to get the filling redone again. If it happens again I will have to get it extracted so tbh I should have just gotten it pulled instead of messing with a root canal.

If you go for vacation or visiting family in third world countries do the dental work there. Root canal or extraction costs 15 dollars in macedonia. Fixed 10 tooths for 150 dollars

Good news. My pain was aswell unbearable lastnight and this morning. Im still numb from the Novacane . But Im really hoping it doesnt hurt even worse than before.. That was the worst pain Ive had thru out my whole life thats why I went thru w the Root Canal. I was told it would remove the nerve from the tooth So Id have no more pain

@@geraldinemcardle2418 A microscope will show you if the canals split. A regular dentist does not use a microscope and if you do a root canal with a regular dentist it wont work if the canals split. An Xray or one of those magnifying glasses dentists use wont show if the canals split. If your canals split and you have a dentist do the root canal with out using a microscope, the Root canal will not be successful. That's why you always want to go to a endodontist who uses a microscope to do the root canal. I can tell you, even my dentist admitted he wouldn't be able to do the root canal correctly if the canals split, cause he doesn't use a microscrope. Dentists don't want to tell people this. I only found out about this, cause this happened to a friend of mine. He got a root canal from a dentist who didn't use a microscope and the root canal failed. He had to get another root canal from a endodontist dentist who uses a microscope. Then he had to get that same tooth re-crowned. So if you need a root canal, make sure you go to a endodontist.
