The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla will take place on the 6th of May, 2023. The Palace has announced that it will “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry”. The components of the ceremony, taking an oath, anointing, investing of regalia, crowning, enthronement and homage have not altered since King Edgar was crowned in 973. And since 1066 nearly every coronation has taken place in Westminster Abbey and been performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury. But over the 1000 years since, everything from the wording and prayers to the guest list and what they wore has been altered with each new monarch. I’ll use the last two coronations of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937 as a guide. And look a bit into palace announcements and media speculation to guide you through what we are likely to see at the coronation of Charles and Camilla.

I saw Queen Elizabeth II coronation as a child in England. T.V's had only just become available and we were the only family on the road who had one--a tiny 12 inch screen in a huge walnut cabinet and a large aerial outside on the roof. All the neighbors crowded into our living room to watch it--standing room only with all us little kids seated on the floor close to the t.v. A wonderful street party happened after the coronation service --it was all so wonderful especially after living through World War II.

What a Wonderful story. Thank You for that. I can just picture it. My Mom, here in the States, purposely went to our local movie theater to watch it. I understand that the film reals were immediately flown directly to the US. But here's the greatest part, the film was still raw and they had to develop it in the air over the Atlantic. I was a 7 year old young Dutch girl when the Queen Elizabeth ll was crowned. As school children we heard her coronation ceremony on radio. It was in English and of course we could not understand it. But I remember the awesome music. My dad happened to be in England at the time and brought back commemorative mugs , which we still have in our family today

I am missing royal family member that went missing 34 ago at age of 4 years old they got rid of me after putting a lot some of money and the form of over 14 trillion in gold after chloroform in me and putting me on a plane for Scotland to be swapped around with a common boy they thought they could then put someone else in my place and then claim the money but then got caught someone else took the name guess who my true name also has the Crown Jewels two of the largest Diamonds known to man no that the royal family and the British government have ran out of money they are now torturing me after I had flashbacks oh my life of things happening when I was little I've been jumped beaten abused salted for the last five years they have been hitting me with electronic Warfare and calling me a piece of crap that they got rid of that won't go away and die and never know why so then they can now claim the money or gold they they keep shouting about outside my house I actually saw with my two eyes black Land Rovers guys with electronic electronic warfare equipment shouting about the Winters a state. I think it's William so-called of Windsor I say because he can't even give Kate what's meant to his second name because it isn't Kate must have been born a queen to have George the King as well another excuse to get to my gold that failed but he still gets cold the Windsor more lies. So the family the royal family and the British government are taking it out of me the broke my hip fractured my vertebrae fraction most pelvis I get no help from the police just abuse and human drains abuses I have not slept in 27 days this is been going on for five years five years it has something to do with the Ark of the Covenant as well I'm not going to see much more as a may sound insane but just me this is so true please someone help me I will give kilo bars of gold to people that tell me tax-free and rent-free to others

Just keep in mind that ER II's Coronation, with all its hoopla, was held at a time when the UK was STILL experiencing WWII rationing. Rationing didn't end in the UK until 1958 (!!!)--over 10 years after rationing was discontinued in the USA (1947).

I'm English, I was 6 when rationing ended in 1953. I had never tasted a Sweet or an Orange until then. I remember shopping with my Nan and her getting out the Ration Books each Saturday. My Mother was thrilled to get rid of "Utility" Furniture and buy something she liked. I can hear and see it now as if it were yesterday.

The last coronation was June 2, 1953. This is a very special occasion, I’m very excited to see this live. My grandma, born in 54’ never saw a coronation. Queen Elizabeth II was the Monarch for my grandmas entire life and she was OBSESSED. We even found out in our genealogy that we’re related to William the Conqueror.

While I understand Charles ditching the fealty swearing of the royal dukes due to Andrew (who as far as I’m aware, has not even been given an invitation to attend?) and to a lesser extent, Harry, it does make me sad that the Dukes of Kent, Gloucester and Edinburgh won’t get this opportunity. Granted, the Duke of Kent has done it once before, but I hope the three of them will have some part in the ceremony to honor their dedication to the monarchy.

Most people l know don't care anything about the monarchy and know very little about them. I am 66 and even though l am American, l was always interested in the history of the British monarchs, even as a child. One note - Queen Mary's crown is not Art Deco in design given that it dates from 1911 and the Exposition of Decorative Arts (formally the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs), from which the Art Deco movement derives its name, was held in Paris in 1925, hence making it impossible for Queen Mary's crown to be called "Art Deco." In the years prior to the exposition (World's Fair) of 1925 there was a movement in architecture and design of "moderne" styling, which greatly influenced what became Art Deco. No matter, beautiful crown that will be wonderful to see used again.

The term "art deco" didn't come in to common use until it was used in a book on the history of the style in 1968. Until then, it was called "moderne". Art deco had its origins long before Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes was held in 1925.

The Art-Deco style predates the 1925 exposition, even if it wasn't referred to that name, hence the crown being called Art-Deco inspired. It has the hallmarks of the style.

Very disappointed Charles would wear a military uniform. This is a ceremony of peace and unity not war and death. Moreover he is the King of the whole nation and every aspect of it, not just its military.

I read in the Guardian that 4 MPs who represent different different religions will play a part by carrying the Orb, Sceptre, and the other royal items. They will not offer prayers or speak. The article stated that Charles is keen to have religions represented, but it seemed like he wasn’t keen to have their roles be too large. As a distant cousin of Diana, William, and Harry, this American is very much looking forward to tuning in. Also, Dominic Raab is no longer Lord Chancellor. Edit - From People on April 30th: “In another remarkable departure from tradition, and underlining the different communities in modern Britain, the leaders of other faiths will greet Charles in unison as he leaves the service. The representatives from the Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and Buddhist faiths will say, "As neighbors in faith, we acknowledge the value of public service. We unite with people of all faiths and beliefs in thanksgiving, and in service with you for the common good."

I must say, this makes me miss Queen Elizabeth II so much. She was so full of spunk with a twinkle in her eye that revealed her feisty attitude. Princess Ann shares this trait with her mother. King Charles is much more stoic. It just makes me sad.

What this video fails to include is the Scottish side of the monarchy and the Coronations that took place at Scone Abbey. Charles is not a King of England and will never be crowned as such. The monarchy is British and has been since the Union of the Crowns, and the Acts of Union.

Daniela . . did you not watch the FIVE!! Seasons that preceded that film?? (I have no idea why they didn't just make another season!!!) It's called 'The Last Kingdom', called so from the 12 books (approxoimately!) by Bernard Cornwell! It''s just fantastic! (I also read all the books 😅(must be crazy!). True kings wear a crown of light. These ones here, and their ancestors centuries before them, did not and do not have this quality and so made themselves a crown of gold or platinum with precious stones to elevate themselves. But he who exalts himself ....

Camilla is a Queen Consort but she is styled as Her Majesty The Queen. A Queen Regnant (Queen Elizabeth II) is styled the same way.

No one is perfect. He was illegally hacked too. Don't forget how he was raised SO privileged, and yet neglected by his parents. He had loving nannies, but they spoiled him. He has done important work with his Trust and has long been a climate activist and environmentalist. Now he won't as King. He is a kind, well read person. Finally able to be with his life long love. Maybe cut him a break? Wait and see how his reign unfolds.

Other European monarchies have done away with coronations way before religious diversity was an issue. Mainly most of those monarchies never had continuous coronation traditions or gave them up in the 19th century out of recognition of modernity
