In this second installment of our Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) series, Dr. Lukin and Ami Patel-Kang delve into the expectations couples should have when engaging with an EFT therapist. EFT is an evidence-based experiential therapy known for its effectiveness, as highlighted in our first video.
EFT unfolds through three primary stages:
De-escalation: This initial stage involves familiarizing ourselves with the couple, exploring their attachment histories, understanding the triggers of their disputes, and "tracking the cycle."
Bonding: At this stage, we go a step further by examining attachment bonds and emotional needs while breaking down the barriers of vulnerability.
Consolidation: Lastly, we ensure the bonding experiences have been fruitful, fostering a new, positive cycle of attachment to effectuate lasting changes.
Of these stages, de-escalation holds paramount importance; it lays the groundwork for any subsequent progress.
A significant component of EFT is "tracking the cycle," which is where we utilize the "EFT Bow Tie" or infinity loop analogies-concepts that are further elaborated on in the video.

Great video. Though an important note on "evidence-based" 0:50. Just because a therapy is experiential or is more unstructured doesn't mean that it's not evidence based. For example, psychodynamic therapy (including object relations) is experiential and open but it is still evidence-based in that it draws from John Bowlby's attachment theory and also because patients tend to not only get better, but also stay better even post-treatment (versus short-term manual treatments). EFT in particular draws from attachment theory, except that it does add more structure to the path you take the couples through. Source: Jonathan Shedler's work on evidence-based practice.
