I feel like the jury should get paid MUCH more than they are because jurors are essential to any criminal case for HUNDRED of years and should be compensated well so people actually would want to attend. Too many people say it's not worth it financially to attend when we could rather be at work making money.

Don't be fooled. Jury Duty is a miserable experience, in both criminal and civil trials. As for myself, Jury Duty not only interrupted my life and business, but when I answered questions honestly, I was chastised since I wasn't answering in the manner that they wanted (and no, I was not obscene or disrespectful). People should already know that Jury Duty is a miserable experience. This should be evident considering that the courts immediately warn you that if you don't show up for jury duty you will be fined and possibly sent to jail. If jury duty was an enriching experience the courts would not have to issue threats to you. The biggest farce of Jury Duty is that lawyers and courts are looking for an impartial jury, or 12 people who can set aside the biases and prejudices in order pass judgement on another person(s). The problem is that no one can actually set aside their biases and prejudices, and the lawyers themselves fight to have jurors who seem more "favorable" to their side. Actual studies have shown that juries usually come to their conclusions based on their own personal experiences. These studies have also shown that in the Jury Room, discussions/debate is usually only done by 3 people (on average) and that the rest of the jury simple side with whoever is winning the argument in the Jury Room. And yes, questions can become personal, and you will be forced to answer the question. If the question is "Have you ever been a victim of a sexual assault or molestation", you may not have to answer the question in front of a room full of people, but you still will have to give your answer to at least 4 or more people (judge, lawyers, court reporter), so the shame and embarrassment is still there. If you don't want others to know about your past, its best to either stay silent or simply lie. Your personal life is no one's business, regardless of what pseudo-important title that they hold. Also, the grifter mentality of government filters into the jury system as well. Whereas all other businesses are required by law to meet the minimum wage requirement that is issued by the government, that same requirement is not enforced with jury duty. Jury Duty's comical payrate is excused by burping out the tired excuse of "It's your civic duty". No, your civic duty is to conduct yourself in a manner that doesn't send you into our courts to be tried by others. Again, Jury Duty is a miserable experience that is force upon you, and the threats to your freedom continue on even if you abide by all of the rules and regulations of Jury Duty. Your honest answer to a question may end up with the judge lecturing you about how you don't understand anything and are a shitty person, or it may end up becoming a contempt of court charge. If you can find a way to "get out" of Jury Duty, by all means, do it. And if you do sit through Jury Selection, be prepared to be lectured to (or worse) when you spike the judge's ire after answering a question honestly. Courts don't want honesty. They just want to get through the day, and then pick up their paychecks every other week.

It's very similar in VA, I was just on a criminal (murder) case and ended up getting excused by the judge. 2.5 straight hours of questions from the judge, state and defense.

I happen to know quite a few people that this question would apply to, so here it goes: "If they ask has anyone here been a victim of a crime?" Does that only apply to crimes that are actually in the legal system that they can then refer back to? For example, it was something that had legal charges attached... Or what if no actions were taken at all. Then do those people not raise their hands/ answer yes?

But what if you miss a week and then can't pay your rent? Do they pay you enough to cover your rent or will they take financial hardship into consideration?

I work for a major aerospace firm that has major operations near your offices. We receive our normal pay while on jury duty. Thus, serving on a jury is not generally a burden for me. Sure, it isn’t fun to wait around all those hours and worse if selected, you have to listen to all manner of grim details of grim lives. But by far the worst part is filling out the questionnaire. I understand that the Washington Supreme Court assigns several attorneys to update the questionnaire periodically. The questions rely on the juror candidate having far more knowledge about legal processes than is typical. For example, “Have you had your civil rights restored?” No layman can know what this question means. I can speculate. But I won’t speculate when the penalty is perjury.

I’ve been through voir dire twice but never made it into the jury box. I’m always a bit nervous about expressing my genuine distrust of police and especially police testimony. I don’t want them to think that I’m “just trying to get out of it,” but I also genuinely do not trust them. Any advice?

Show up at court and just refuse the illegal search getting into the court building because as a citizen you have the Constitutional right to refuse any search.

The best way to approach a jury summons is to forget trying everything you can to get out of it and just accept it. Yes you do have to get up super early, you won't have your phone, you don't get paid squat and it can be painfully boring. Just assume you're going to get picked and enjoy the process if you do.

I was teaching myself chaos theory and brought a textbook and pad of paper (to do problem sets) to jury duty. The prosecution tossed me because I'm a mathematician and have been well-taught as to how to go about proving things. Even though I was no longer 'in the box', I watched my former music instructor (someone I would describe as amoral) tell half truths to get onto the jury. This happened many decades ago. What can someone in my situation do--when they know another juror and they have good reason to believe that the juror was deceptive, either to get onto a jury or to get off of jury duty?

If a person is not guilty you can demand a innocent if guilty then you can stand your ground even if judge say let him go your the boss not the judge ! Say if judge wants to put some one in jail and you say no it defense and the rest of the jury agrees he innocent
