I think that Neon Dynasty is the best ode to Japan possible. Kamigawa is based on old Japanese culture. Neon Dynasty is based on modern Japanese culture. I also think that pulling it off with a somewhat Kaladesh vibe, minus the steampunk asthetic, will work without sacrificing the Magic the Gathering feel.

I think they will likely print a reference to it, but a 5-mana artifact with one line of strange text like that doesn't really fit modern magic design philosophy in my opinion

I've read the kamigawa novels, and the Kami War was started by Kondo stealing part of O-Kagachi's essence in the form of The Taken One. I don't know where the Homelands connection lies.

Shrines would be a great returning mechanic.

Even just one support card in any say would be pretty nice. But new shrines would be amazing. A colorless shrine would be the obvious choice for a 1 of print, but I think it would be more in the spirit of the deck to just print 5 new ones.

The energy cards would at least play well with the kaladesh energy in older formats.

Parasitic mechanics aren’t necessarily bad it’s just in kamigawa they’re isolated too. Energy as an abstract mechanic plays well with counter synergy, and other mechanics potentially imagine: ninjitsu (e)(e) or flashback (e)(e). Or how about (3): add (e) and (e)(e): add (1). Energy’s problem lies in it’s execution rather than the mechanic itself. Simply if energy abilities were dual energy/mana activated it’d solve 99% of its issues. Like make the aforementioned ninjitsu payable by mana or energy and of course make the energy cost cheaper allowing for energy use to be beneficial but not integral making both the downside of having your counters removed or losing to ability to gain counters back breaking but yet will hurt.

I must say I really dislike energy, not for the parasitic part just I find it a mechanic burden

@Professor, if you happen to come across this comment, it's kAmigawa, ka sounds like CAR minus the "R". In Japanese, barring exception unknown to me, every vowel is pronounced exactly the same. "A" always pronounced ä.

Splice was gold!. It just needed to be more expansive. Out of 92 Arcane cards only 27 had Splice. And the sorceries never had the option to do so…. I believe I was badly executed but the design is very clever and has a lot of depth

I loved the splice onto arcane that could only be spliced, not hardcast.

We've seen one or two cards using a more generalized version of splice, which might also solve the issue of the mechanic being so self-contained. If you can splice onto any instant, or any sorcery, or even both, the splice cards would have way more outlets to be useful than just arcane spells.

@@r0m988 Well, what I will say now is not a full articulated, well argued thought, but more of a gut feeling of mine. That said, if you have been following the professor for some time you might already know what I'll say. That question elicit two answers, because the question itself is two fold. First we have Magic: the Product. Given how Hasbro/WoTC have been pushing Magic, we can say that Magic is "morphing" from a good quality product, aimed at a niche market into a average(or mediocre if you have are a bit more salty like I am) quality product, aimed at the common denominator market. The crossovers with very popular series cement my opinion on this and I believe that Hasbro/WotC is trying to "milk" the goose that lays the golden eggs a "bit" too hard. I know that Hasbro and WotC are companies, I have no illusion about that, but they are going at a pace that I do not believe is sustainable. For more details on this, the prof and the others have videos that go at length at this. With that in mind, let's wonder about Magic: the Game. This part is more my opinion than anything else, so take what I say with a few grains of salt please. Given how Magic design has been for the last few years, we can see the game "morphing" into something more fast paced and more aggressive. Things are getting so out of shape that the bannings have been increasing (I don't particularly care about standard, but we can measure things by looking at more stable formats like Modern and Legacy), and given how the Magic: the Product has been introducing a FoMo policy, we can see the game suffering from unreasonable power spikes. I won't argue about the color pie breaks and that stuff because I don't have a good opinion on that, but I will say that since they "defanged" the color white (note the quotes please) and have been trying to change what white do, I have a feeling that Magic: the Game has been going towards a more... ephemeral direction that, like the product, I don't think is sustainable. Will this kill Magic? Eeeeh I don't think so. Although I'm quite a bit pessimistic, I don't think Magic is dying(yet), it is changing. Now the question is, do we as players, like this change? From a lore perspective I won't even touch that hornet nest because in that regard I HAVE some opinions and they are definitely not positive.

Honestly sounds like a pair for innistrad, with giest of saint Traft and Thalia.

Splice could make a lot of sense if the lore is going “we’re using arcane/spirit energy to power all this cool tech.” Suddenly, I’m wondering if we’ll see one of the Praetors on Kamigawa with that idea.

There was a leak some time ago with like a year+ worth of random information, and I'm pretty certain all of it has been accurate so far. One of the bits of info was that there would be a card called "Jin-Gitaxias, Reality Hacker". Edit: slight wording change.

Yeah. Bushido is a no-brainer. It is a simple mechanic that hasn't returned just because it is setting speciffic. And they learned their lesson from Zendikar rising. I don't expect it not to be in the set.
