When I learned the first Filipino settlement in the U.S. was located just outside New Orleans, LA, I knew I had to visit. Thanks to the knowledge of Dr. Michael Menor Salgarolo, Ph.D who recently graduated from ‪@newyorkuniversity‬, I also got to see important Filipino historic sites, including the markers of St. Malo, Manila Village and Clark Cheniere, which is where the first settlement of Filipinos was located, as well as the tomb of the Hispano Filipino Benevolent Society Tomb at the St. Vincent De Paul Cemetery and the site of where Jean Saint Malo (namesake of the St. Malo Filipino settlement) was executed in front of St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square (Plaza d'Armas) in the French Quarter of New Orleans, LA.

Love this! I lived in Louisiana for a bit and found out about the Filipino settlement when I saw some Cajun friends using spicy vinegar. I said we do that too! It was SO cool to find out because I felt very at home in Lousiana. So to know I have ancestors who settled there was a special. Thank you!

Jean Saint Malo wasn't a Filipino man! He was a Black man rooted here in Louisiana and of our Foundational Black-American LaLwizyàna Kréolité regional ethnic group here in Louisiana.

Yes, that is correct. Professor Michael Salgarolo explained to me who he was, as well as his origins. He found it fascinating that the Filipinos chose to name their first village after him. He is currently researching the origins of their connection.

I just returned from there few days ago with the same mission to find St. Malo and couldn't find it. The closest I could get to it is through Shellswamps. a fishing village surrounded by bayous and swamps. I was dissapointed but will return someday to even a hidtorical marker and perhaps meet a descendant.

Yes, Dr. Salgarolo informed me the actual settlement is only accessible by boat. The structures the Filipinos lived in were destroyed by a typhoon and never rebuilt when the Filipinos moved to the city for shelter.

the first recorded arrival of Filipinos on the land that is now the continental U.S. on October 18, 1587, by way of a Spanish galleon, that docked at what is now Morro Bay, California. A Plaque commemorating this event was built in downtown Morro Bay, Ca. This town is located northwest of San Francisco, CA. Historical Landmark Declared by the Filipino American National Historical Society California Central Coast Chapter Dedicated October 21, 1995

💯 There is a location said to be north of San Francisco where Filipinos may have first touched US soil, even before Morro Bay. But I visited Morro Bay (and did an episode about it 👍🏼) and it’s actually located in central California, about an hour outside of San Luis Obispo. Beautiful area… and the plaque was a challenge to find. But I found it.😉

@@TESZMillan , looking at the map I thought it was NW of SF coz it's close to the bay. But anywho.. good that you visited that place. I did not know that either until 7 years ago because it was in the news during the Asian American month & I lived in the Bay Area for 45 years.

@@alroberts193 In a way, you were right though about a location being NW of San Francisco. I’ve heard on occasion there being another landing site that some believe predates Morro Bay, which would be fascinating to see. It’s great that your knowledge of Filipino history is expanding. I learn something new every day and it makes me feel so happy.

@@TESZMillan , history is my forte. Regarding the Manilamen who lived in St. Malo, Louisiana they were actually featured on PBS (Public Broadcasting) on Channel 9 way back in the mid 1990's. I still remember that time when I watched it on TV. In fact the descendants of these Manilamen held a reunion in Louisiana of course. The descendants were of mix races from Native Americans, to European & African Americans. It was interesting to watch.

I found this as a strong supporting documentation of Guro Dan Inosanto, that our ancestors in the old aboard the Old Galleon Ships as slaves but had a Strong hands and Heart and Knowledge of Knife Fighting (aka Kali, Eskrima, Pekiti Tersia) As I saw, Sad to say that this art of self defence is more appreciated in other countries, due to collonial mentality of most Filipinos that they love K-Pop and Coco Martin corny antics😅

@TESZMillan I was born and raised on Grand Isle and my people intermarried with Filipino Fisherman and workers from the Shrimp drying sheds at FiFi Island and Manila Village with last names of Bradberry and Santiny. Through the turn of the 20 century we created an entirety unique race of people known to the locals as Islanders or Baritarian...
