I recently had strabismus surgery and my eyes were overcorrected too far. My surgeon was able to readjust the sutures one week later and fix my alignment.
In this video I talk about what it was like and I even show some actual footage of the procedure.
If you want to read more details about it and see more pictures go to strabismussolutions.com/sutures

That’s crazy they do it whilst you’re awake right there in the office and yeah I can definitely see why you felt like you were going to pass out, your brain is like “there’s a guy cutting my eye open with a sharp object and I’m just supposed to sit here and let him do it”. Always remember to breathe, re-focus, rationalise and breathe from your belly. That’s what I tell myself at the dentist and it works. I have hypertropia where my eye deviates upwards. My optician said I’ve had it my whole life but could get surgery like you did but we’ll see if I’m ready for that in the future. Thanks for the vid.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I’m on a waiting list to have similar surgery in a few months, with the post-op suture adjustments while awake. I knew that the suture tweaking would be stressful and quite uncomfortable, but seeing how the post-op procedures actually work has removed a huge amount of uncertainty and anxiety. Now I know: It won’t be fun, but it will be worth it!

Very nice video. Serves as an awareness to others that it can be corrected. I suffered a lot because of my eye problem my right eye turns inward while my left eye is straight. I was the only kid in town with such condition. I was the center of bully during my school years. I became introvert, always had self-pity, I avoided people, I never joined team sport games in school. After high school, I wanted to join the military or police but I was disqualified because of my eye. I felt useless. I started entertaining some suicidal thoughts. I pity to much my mother that I don't want to give her any problem. At 25 years of age I got a baby and it give me that determination to keep going I want to see him grow up and live a successful life. I was 31 years old when I finally had my eye surgery. I felt I lost that 10 years of my supposedly productive years (from 20 to 30 years of age).

I just had this surgery today. On the same eye I had a previous surgery for convergent strabismus 25 years ago. Today's surgery was due to the opposite: the same exact eye had been divergent for 3 years, more or less. Tomorrow, I still have to visit my ophthalmologist for a realignment technique, which is the one I suppose was shown in this video. Let's see how it goes Tomorrow. Hoping for the best 🤞🏼

Hey, I think that is ME. Did you ever and do you now have binocular vision? I had that as a baby, worst in right eye, fixed as best as 1956 US Army paediatric ophthalmological surgeons could do. Never had binocular vision, have always been a switch-hitter. 10 or so years ago right eye started going divergent. Some trouble with left one tracking as well. So mine lasted about 50+ years. I didn't know it wouldn't last. I wonder if it was close computer work that did it. Changed jobs to graphic design at about that time and with nose in screen, favoured my left eye which has always been stronger. Interesting.

My daughter was born with this and I’ve noticed it’s getting worse. They were hoping that by her follow up appointment they could try using eye patches to strengthen the one eye that is worse than the other. However, they warned me we will probably need to do surgery if it gets too bad. They want to wait until she’s at least two if that happens but I am so nervous to have her go through with that. I don’t know if it’s better to do it now or to wait until she’s older, but so many people ask about it and I’m afraid it will make her self conscious when she starts school. It’s so frustrating to have to watch her eye push out every time she tries to focus. Thank you for being so detailed it gives me a lot to think about.

I would look into mewing, aka orthotropics. I say this as someone who has had never had vision problems, to it degrading over the past few years and I had realized what had happened from old photos. The upward strength of the back third of your tongue supports your head, left and right hemispheres. If the support of your tongue disappears for months, years, it gets worse and vision can be affected. I swear I’ve been back and forth with 1/3rd the capability of my sight and the solution is found in orthotropics.

My 3yr old son has intermittent exotropia in both eyes. It started around 6 months old, so it has been a long 2.5 years of trying to correct it with eye patches, and eye drops. He was referred to a surgeon at 1.5yrs old, because weren’t seeing any change in his eyes getting better. The surgeon wanted to continue doing corrective treatments until the age of 3, with appointments at the hospital and his surgeons office every 3 months. We just saw his surgeon again last week, and he said it’s time for surgery, so I signed the papers, and he said we will be doing it in 6 months (July), so that he is fully healed by the time he starts pre-k in September. It sounds like surgery for my son, will be a bit different than yours. He said that there is a chance that the eyes might turn inward afterwards, and that he may eventually need a 2nd surgery, which I’m guessing is due to his age. I’m super excited that he is finally getting surgery to correct his eyes, but I’m extremely nervous because they actually need to make an incision at the outer side of his eyelid crease, which will thankfully be closed with dissolvable glue. He also said that the the sides of his eyes, to his hairline is going to be swollen for a few weeks, and very bruised for around 6 weeks. He won’t have any eyesight for the first 24hrs, because we will have to keep them covered, and then he has to avoid direct sunlight and heavy activity for 6 weeks post op. It’s going to be a really long and boring summer for him, which is going to be difficult because he lives for the outdoors, and because of where we live, we spend 6 months stuck inside due to our very cold (-40•c) winters. We are crossing our fingers that his eyes will be good to go by September, because both his surgeon and my spouse and I, want avoid him possibly being bullied.

I’ve had strabismus since Birth! My right eye moves 60 degreees to the right. I use to control it longer enough to take a decent picture. Now the older I got the worse it has become! That feeling of not looking people in their eyes because I’m ashamed of it moving. I got picked on about it my whole life! It messed with my self esteem tremendously! I could be talking to someone and their looking around because my eye moves to the right and u can’t tell who I’m looking at. I just got a new ID and my eye is cocked to the right on it. I cried and cried for days about that ID PICTURE!! I hope I have good results after the surgery because I’ve suffered for 37 years not being able to look people in their eyes😢

@@ChicaCoco598you are not alone. Felt the same. Have it with my right eye. Though I can control it while taking photos, or while looking in the mirror, but in normal state when I am not conscious about it the eyeball is always exteopic. Some people even look at me as if this is a kind of disability, as if I m a retard. Some people even have the malice to ask why I can't look straight. In my childhood I was indirectly bullied as well. But yes, though deep inside I feel ashamed sometimes, I feel hurt and sad but I stay strong at the same time and choose to be only around people who can accept me the way I am. But yes sometimes I wish If I could also look Normal. I there's a way out of this thing. So here I am watching this video. Just wanted to say, stay strong. I can totally feel u. But Until you start having any problem with your vision, don't feel this bad.

I am now 71 years old. I’ve had divergence insufficiencies since I was 66. I had every neurological test available done twice in different facilities. There was never a dr who could even prescribe me glasses that would help with the dv. Not even a developmental optometrist. My first two pediatric strabismus drs told me I was not a candidate for surgery. I recently went to a new pediatric strabismus dr in one of the first facilities I had gone to and this dr said yes to surgery. I have been going to a vision therapist trained in NORA for 39 weeks. I’m going to graduate soon, but have no difference with my dv. My current diopters are 12. You cannot see my strabismus at all. Does this sound right to you? I’m very worried and a little skeptical, but this dv has ruined my life. Thank you.

I already have an eye surgery for my left eye when I was 12 years old due to muscular or nerve issues that pulled my left eyelid down when I was prek or k, but I did not need suture adjustment. When I was 17 years old, I have Graves’ disease and for few years now my left eye got lazy, smaller than the right eye, and my left pupil got misaligned when I look straight or to the left, my pupil just goes up. I also have congenital Chiari one malformation on the left side of my brain, it’s mild, so I went to see a neuro ophthalmologist in 2019, but he did nothing for my misalignment. Recently my ophthalmologist referred me to strabismus specialist, he said because this is a muscular problem, the neuro ophthalmologist won’t fix it. I’m so scared to have my left eye surgery in the future now after watching this video because I’m sure I would pass out if I have to do suture adjustment. I have 4 kids to take care of too, I have no relatives or even friends in NY. And none of my cousins in NJ can help me out because they have many kids there too and have to work also.

I am 72 and currently on the fence about getting this done. I currently wear prism glasses for the correction which work very well. I wondered if they did something to your other eye as it appears reddened also? I have been to an initial appointment but can't get the surgery for at least another 8 to 10 weeks as the surgeon is very busy and covers a large area. My eyes look normal as mine is a vertical alignment issue and no one can tell I even have this problem but have for about 10 yrs. He tells me it would take adjusting only one eye. I am extremely anxious since I have had the glasses which work well for over 10 yrs and don't want to end up worse off. The list of possible risks have me on edge. But thank you so much for posting this.

Does a doctor need to check it out in order to know how many degrees out of position it is? I've had a lazy eye my whole life. Had ab eye patch when I was younger but it didn't fix the problem. I see double sighted without glasses/contact lenses. I've known for a while that my eyes are uneven, but I only realised more recently that my left eye isn't straight, hence why it appears smaller, particularly when I smile. I already have quite narrow eyes so it's a big insecurity. The confusing thing is that although I can only see my eye seems to move inward/downward a little, the difference in how large both eyes appear is quite significant. Is strabismus surgery likely to be the right solution for me?

@sanabel19

Hey! I’m getting my surgery tm and thought I’d help you out 1) No, as the surgeon does not operate on your vision nerves/ area 2) Yes, but you will be asleep and will never feel it 3) Well it depends. If you have double vision yes it will stop that. Also it will help contacts/glasses work better as the eyes will now be working together. 4) It won’t work, and you may need another surgery. Or the alignment won’t be satisfactory for you. (these are both extremely rare) 5) Again it depends. Vision therapy MAY BE an option HOWEVER, it will take abt a year and it’s not recommended as the eyes most likely will cross again. But in my case this was not an option and surgery was the only thing I could do. Hope this helped! Lmk if you have any other questions!

Hi there! I agree with @sanabel19 on the first two, but have a slightly different perspective on the last 3 questions. 3. Surgery can help improve peripheral vision if the eyes become more aligned. For rare cases, the surgery can eliminate double vision, but this is more the exception than the rule. 4. I agree that poor alignment is not a great outcome, this happens about 20-30% of the time depending on diagnosis. Worse than a poor eye alignment is double vision. 5. Vision therapy is another great option. It doesn't always completely fix the eyeturn, but for 70-80% it does without the need for surgery. Sometimes you can combine VT and surgery for an ideal result. Explore options. Just because the surgery tells you VT isn't an option, doesn't mean it's true. Do a consultation with a vision therapy office to find out if it is an option. Good luck! Go to strabismussolutions.com/findvt/ and I can help you find an office.

It depends on the method that your surgeon used. Mine could still do the adjustment after one week, but others can not. You'd need to ask your office, sorry I don't have an answer for you!

I just got my surgery today, a day after my 38 bday. I think I’m encountering the same problem she had. I’ll give it a couple of days. I go see the doctor in six days. If I can get my eyes, straight like hers, I’ll be so happy.

@@moftnn I’m completely blind out my right eye, I will never gain vision. I had a real bad drift of my right eye. The doctor was able get the drift out and align my eyes. I will say that talking to people is a lot better now. I can see that they aren’t trying to guess which eye to look at.

Please any let me know I’m insecure sometimes and don’t look at people in their face because of my lazy eye it only happens when I’m tired or if I haven’t gotten enough sleep. My right eyeball goes up. But I have a 10/10 vision which is weird because if I’m rested my eyes are fine if I’m tired my right eyes turn up very noticeable people tend to judge I tend to live with. It but also in pics you can see it very much
