Hi sorry to bother you, firstly thank you so much for all this feeding information! My uncle saw a painted turtle get dropped off at the side of the road by its owners. My uncle gave it to me to take care of, so I've been doing research and that's how I came across your videos, they are all really helpful, so thank you. I need some advice, my turtle isn't really eating a lot, whenever I try to feed him by hand he'll swim away, so I usually leave the food floating in his tank, but he'll usually only eat a little bit of it. I initially thought it was cause he's stressed out by the new environment environment/tank, but I'm not sure.
@DIYReptiles4 жыл бұрын
Hello, are you sure they were its owners? Are you sure they were not just relocating a turtle they found on the road? Anyway, I would not exactly worry about it too much. As long as you think it is eating a bit, it should be fine. If you are worried about it losing weight, I recommend weighing every month or even every week. I weigh all of my animals monthly to make sure they are doing well.

Hey I have a question. I have a 1 year old turtle and I recently got a 3 day old turtle. My older one keeps biting at the baby and is scared of it. What should I do? I kind of have to keep them in the same tank or else I have to get rid of the baby
@DIYReptiles4 жыл бұрын
Kooklicious I suggest adding a divider to the tank. If you do this, you need to make sure each turtle has a basking spot and everything it needs. If you can not do that then you need to get rid of the baby. That probably is not what you want to hear, but unfortunately some turtles are aggressive, and you definitely do not want the baby in that type of environment.

@DIYReptiles4 жыл бұрын
That is a hard question. You could try educating them on turtle husbandry. A good way of doing this is showing them what can come from caring for a turtle incorrectly. I know that in Ohio you need a license to keep native turtles. I am not sure where you are located, but you may be able to bring something like that up. I am not really sure what the answer is exactly. Hopefully this help though.

I found this painted turtle on the side of the road and she’s very active and till scared I’ve tried to feel it dried mealworms and she’s not eating what should I do? I’ve done research and found nothing
@DIYReptiles4 жыл бұрын
I mainly recommend letting the turtle go back into the wild. As long as it is healthy, just find a water source near where you found it and let it go. It will most definitely eat and do well in the wild. If you do not want to do that, try feeding it pellets and/or live insects like earthworms.

Can they be social? And, how big of a tank should I get one? Thanks.
@DIYReptiles5 жыл бұрын
Reeseyeet they can be very social but I depends on the individual turtle. I would say a 75 gallon tank at the very least for one painted turtle.

Can i have it in half water half land?
@DIYReptiles4 жыл бұрын
Bryce Drexler as long as the water area is large enough and there is a proper basking area for it. However, I believe that the land area will be wasted space.

I have a wild 3 year old turtle why doesn’t he eat pellets is he just not used to ot or something? I already tried the zoo med and repto mini but he doesn’t even want to touch them what pellets do wild 3 yr old turtles eat?
@DIYReptiles4 жыл бұрын
G Jayzerz waltford I will first recommend letting the turtle go back into the wild if that is an option. It is my opinion that wild turtles belong in the wild. If you decide not to let it go which I believe is not the right option in this situation, then I recommend trying to get it to eat something other than pellets. Try insects like feeder roaches, crickets, earthworms, and mealworms and greens like Romain lettuce, collard greens, and dandelion greens. The only thing I can think of to do to get it to eat pellets is to wait until it is hungry enough. It must eventually eat something, and if it is only being offered pellets, it will probably eat the pellets. Again above all I suggest letting it go.
@gabbypeng9304 жыл бұрын
I did let it go but it kept on going back to my swimming pool (where i found him) i put him in the creek but all he wants is to go back to the pool (I also caught him back in june 2019) but since he is only eating earthworms and pork, beed etc.

He refuses to eat any greens 🥬 like ANY i tried cucumber and lettuce (romain and iceberg) even fruits and watermelon (Which people told me that watermelon 🍉 was a treat) but he still doesn’t eat any greens
@DIYReptiles4 жыл бұрын
That actually makes for a proper case. I suggest letting it go somewhere close, but not in the creek. I believe that it would not be detrimental to the turtle to be moved. Turtles are quite hardy. If you do not want to do that, then you do need to get it eating pellets. I suggest just not feeding it anything until it eats the pellets. Turtles can actually go quite a while without eating, but if it gets to upwards of a week, you would have to start feeding the insects again.

my turtle refuses to eat pellets, I know he waz a wild caught baby, i dont know exactly how old but measuring the belly he/she is less then 2 and a half inches long and less then an inch and a half wide now, but I don't know where the were caught cuz he/she use to be my old roommates and when they moved out they just basicly abandoned him/her with me and my bf at the time, my ex then left and now I'm kinda just stuck with a little turtle trying to get him to eat but he won't touch anything but tuna and cooked shrimp that I've thawed out, he/she won't touch the dried shrimp anymore, imma also stop spinach and start giving him lettuce/greens, it's been 5 months total but the last 2 and a half months I've been on my own, I'm trying my best to give him a good life sence I have no way of returning him back where the idiot roommate found him.. I'm also saving up for a 75 gallon tank already, I hope it'll be enough for when it's older but I'm not sure, any bigger and i just don't have the room unfortunately and it's just going to be the 1 turtle in the tank, the roommate has tried to ask for the turtle back recently but I refuse to give it back cuz they had it in horrible living conditions, yellow water alot of algae no fresh veggies, poor thing didn't even have a filter till it waz just me taking care of it, any advise you can give, id realy appreciate the help
@DIYReptiles3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you are doing very well in your situation. I think a seventy five gallon will be great. I suggest with whatever tank you have to fill it up as much as you possibly can. Do not just fill up half the tank because that is a huge waste of space. If the water level is down a couple inches that is not a big deal. As far as feeding it, I generally suggesting just waiting until it will eat pellets. It will probably never start to eat pellets if it is getting other more enticing food. I would continue feeding it greens (it is definitely a good idea to which away from spinach), but maybe do not feed it meat for a while. I am not asking you to starve it, but eventually it would probably find interest in the pellets. Once it is hungry enough, it should eat the pellets. Turtles can actually go a week or two without eating without much issue. It definitely would not be a problem if it still ate the greens during that time. It sound like you want the best for the turtle, and that is great. Good luck! Another thing to note is that if the turtle is a native species and you are in the United States, you may need some kind of permit to keep it. I live in Ohio, and I have quite a few captive bred native turtles that I have taken in. I just recently learned that I need a non-commercial propagating license to keep them. I was unaware of this before, and I am getting one now.

Gabby Yang if it is a natural pond and they are wild turtles then I would not worry about feeding them pellets. They are probably better off on a naturalistic diet of whatever fish and plants they find in the pond.

@DIYReptiles4 жыл бұрын
Turtles do not take care of each other. Please let the baby turtle go. I do not really know how to explain this, but you are personifying turtles. Unlike humans, mother turtles do not take care of their babies. Likely the deceased turtle you saw was not even its mother. Young turtles survive on their own. You are not helping it by taking it in, and it would probably have a much better life in the wild. I am not telling you this to upset you or offend you, so I hope I have not done those things. It is just that there are lots of turtles already in captivity that need homes. If you want to really help a turtle, find one that someone else is trying to get rid of.
