I work in a visitor facing role in London and when I speak to world visitors, especially from the US and Australia, they usually ask for pub recommendations. I first tell them to try and go to an area outside of the tourist traps if they can! I’m an ale drinker so I do suggest trying an ale on hand pump, which was not covered here. The beer US drinkers are used to is the colder draft ‘tap’ beers (Craft ales) and there are plenty to choose from in London - most established breweries in London (Young’s, Fuller’s etc) have their own craft ales and smaller independents often do as well. The hand pump ales are the ‘warmer’ beers (Real ales/cask ales) that come in as great a variety as the craft ones. These are the traditional ales of the U.K., brewed without - in the case of craft ales - killing the yeast. Real ales are only ‘warm’ in comparison to the craft ales. In reality, their temperature is designed to be between 11-13 degrees Celsius (55 Fahrenheit), or ‘cellar temperature’. This makes real ales a lot more difficult to keep than craft ales. But if a US drinker wants a really authentic British beer, it’s the real ale they should try even if it’s just the once. Just like craft ales, they come in a huge variety from IPAs, APAs, Golden Ale and Bitters, to Red Ales, Milds, Stouts and Porters. If you find yourself in a pub where you have to choose which real ale to have, I would recommend avoiding the chain real ales like Greene King (Abbot Ale, Greene King IPA) - these are not a good introduction to real ale! Ales like London Pride and Doombar are everywhere and as such the quality is variable. If you can, always find ales from local London independents like Truman’s, Redemption, Southwark and Portobello. Some pub chains like Wetherspoons, Nicholson’s and Greene King do offer ales from these independents so they have an outlet. Also, if you’re visiting London at the start of August, look out for the Great British Beer Festival, held every year at Kensington Olympia - a chance to try Real and Craft ales from around the U.K. Enjoy your visit to our pubs!

I'd actually disagree with avoiding big breweries for someone's first cask ale. The big breweries (e.g Fullers, Greene King, Everards, Shepherd Neame, Theakstons, Sharps etc) are highly consistent and not especially adventurous with their headliners. When you're not accustomed to the style, something that's very middle-of-the-road, consistent and sold enough that it's always fresh is a decent start. Well it be the best pint of cask ale in that pub? Probably not. But the chance of it being wrong and putting someone off traditional beer forever is much lower. And although I called out Theakstons before, Old Peculier is one of my all-time favourite beers and I'll almost always go for it if I see if on cask. It's just a great beer. Generally speaking, I find Northern breweries to be better for traditional styles (that likely reflects the fact that I started drinking ale in Cumbria and Lancashire so it's what I'm expecting), but there are some amazing craft breweries in London (and more broadly, the South) who are pushing the boat out and setting the bar very high for new and innovative beer.

First thing you do is get out of the "Tourist District." With over 20 countries visited, you're far safer in the local pubs, and will have a much better time. My favorite towns traveling are the sleepy ones that no one pays attention to. Skip Dublin and London.

I'd disagree that the quality of Doom Bar is particularly variable. One of its selling points is that it's brewery conditioned, not cask conditioned - most of the yeast is killed off before shipping. That makes it much easier for landlords to keep compared to cask-conditioned ales. It's a bit bland compared to other beers (another selling point, actually), but it's consistently so!

I would say it's more common for there not to be a 'queue' as such at a bar - everyone stands at the bar, and etiquette is to defer to those who were there before you when the bar-person asks
@leighoriordan
@leighoriordan 11 ай бұрын
Agreed. I don’t think I’ve ever queued at a pub like shown here. It’s more of a huddle but defer to the person who was there before you if the bar staff come to you first. Also, not obligatory, but have your cash or card in your hand so as it’s obvious you’re waiting to purchase.

Watched a ton of your videos before visiting the past couple of weeks and this was one of the best ones to prepare me before stepping foot in a pub! One thing that might be useful in an updated video is taking note of table numbers since all the pubs I went to asked what table number I was sitting at, particularly when ordering food. Thanks again for your great content!

when my wife and visit london (we have done it twice), we have a beer a day challenge. Basically, we will go to a pub (usually a different one each time) and order a different pint of beer or cider at each pub. By the end of our trip we vote on which one we like. Its a great way to taste different drinks. And like you mention, pubs can have some of th best food as well. Sunday Roast is not to be missed.

If you are ordering food at the bar, make sure you find a table first and save a seat. Also note the table number as this is the way they know where to bring your food. It is interesting to note that the vast majority of pubs are owned by large chains that have locations across the country. The food and beer offerings are generally the same at all of their locations.

Another thing worth learning is what the options are if you are sober or aren't drinking as much. You can get any drink from the taps as a half pint which is exactly half the price. A shandy is half beer half lemonade. There is always soft drinks/mixers on tap - cola, diet cola, lemonade, soda water, tonic, lime cordial and blackcurrant cordial. Lime/Blackcurrant & Soda is a popular cheap soft drink instead of a pint, and it's also common to have Lager & Lime or Cider & Blackcurrant

I was at the Kings Head on Moscow Road in Bayswater on July 4th, 2003. While at the bar for a second pint I was approached by a local who, hearing my American "accent", congratulated me on our Revolution. He was pretty loaded. Had bangers and mash for dinner there. Best all around experience was in Thirsk, where after getting a bed an breakfast spot we ended up in The Black Bull, intrigued by the signboard out front featuring a "giant Yorkshire pudding" as the special. We each ordered one. The things were the size of a pie, but really good. Only one other customer in the place sipping on a Strongbow. The waiter and the cook spent idle time playing darts and smoking.

Been to London a couple times now, and this all checks out. The one thing I struggle with--as a solo traveler--is how to order food for my table. Ideally you leave your stuff at a table so no-one sits at it while you're ordering (since you have to tell the bartender where to send the food)--however, if you're traveling solo, you'll see a lot of signs warning you /not/ to leave your stuff unattended. So that can be fun--at least at the pubs that don't have a dedicated restaurant section.

Pubs are beautiful in London, the atmosphere at tines is great...especially in Central London at 5pm-6pm when the after work crowd shows up and the pubs are packed with atmosphere. However it's true, like many things in the city, they aren't open that late, it's normal for most pubs to close at 11pm...some midnight, if you think your going to do a pub crawl night out starting at 10pm you won't get to far....you'll end up needing to find a club to keep drinking for a later night. I found people go out much earlier for drinks in England then I experience in North America, so if you do a pub crawl, your night out starts a lot earlier then you might be use to in USA for example.

Great video. We don’t always say cheers tbh, but it is something people can do, especially for the first drink. Queues at a bar are often along the line of the bar. You can join anywhere along the bar where there is space, but you’re expected to know who was there before you and who came after so you don’t jump the queue. I would add to this real ales. I’m not personally a beer drinker, but the best pubs (as in atmosphere, aesthetic etc) do seem to serve the best ales. If you like different types of beers, definitely worth checking out if the pub sells beer from local breweries too.

Yeah on this: don’t queue up to the bar like a pleb. Get to the front, know who is in front of you, smile and be courteous. Queuing for a pint in a line is fucking ridiculous. Enjoy the pub for what it is and don’t make it staid x

Actually, I've been in pubs before, just here in Montreal and one in Toronto (and I've been to the Bull & Finch Pub in Boston, which the exterior was the setting for Cheers!). I'm happy that point #9 answered my question for me. My wife and I will be travelling to Paris for two weeks in July and we're going to London for a short, almost 48 hours trip via the Eurostar. We will also have our son who will be turning 15 next month, so I'll push to have dinner at a pub for the first day. Second day we have to be at St. Pancras for 4:30pm for our train back to Paris at 6:01pm to pass security and customs. Cheers!

The Windsor Castle where the host visited has pretty solid food, but many other better pubs for food if you need recommendations. I’d imagine with just 48 hours you won’t get to Nottinghill or East London where I think there are better pubs for food, but I’m sure you’ll find something at least decent.

@@gmnewlook, Sure thing, just write and I’ll see if I can think of any easy ones to get to for you. Actually, a friend will be in London with his family, including two kids a little younger than yours, this summer and I recommended The Prospect of Whitby and Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese- both amongst the oldest pubs in London and both have solid food (not the best, but definitely decent). They’re both relatively close to tourist attractions too. Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is near St. Paul’s and The Prospect of Whitby is nearish to Tower Bridge. The idea was just that with kids they would be more interesting spots since they have a certain atmosphere and some history compared to a pub that would have better beer and/or food selections. You should be able to find all of the traditional pub dishes at both and, given that you’ll be there in the summer, The Prospect of Whitby has two nice terraces on both levels. If you’re looking for places just for the food though, I’d recommend The Harwood Arms (probably out of the way for you unless you’re staying nearby) and The Anchor and Hope (more central, especially if you’re on the south side of the Thames to see The Globe Theater or The Tate Modern). Note, neither are cheap for a pub and you’d have to make reservations in advance for both.

@@geoffreyk9164 I'll keep that in mind, thanks. Yeah, ours is 15 now and we'll be staying overnight a few minutes walk from Pimlico station on the Victoria, on Belgrave Rd. We're arriving on the Eurostar at 10:39am and departing the next day for Gare du Nord on the 18:01 train. But, like I said, our itinerary isn't done yet, we'll do that all three of us together probably in May so we can reserve tickets for some places like Château de Versailles and such. Cheers from Montreal, QC!

Fun fact: Historically, pubs were open early and all day, and people would have a beer for breakfast. This was restricted during morning and afternoon times when World War I came around, to not interfere with the war effort. Eventually laws were loosened again in 1988.

As a Brit I really enjoyed Jess's video. She mentioned that 45% of households in the UK drink cider. That isn't the case. If you go into a pub in most locations in the UK, including London, very few people will be drinking cider. The vast majority will be drinking some type of lager or real ale/IPA/Bitter. A much smaller proportion will also drink stout/porter like Guinness. However, there are markedly more cider drinkers if you go into a pub in Somerset or Herefordshire as that's where most of the cider is made. Also, if you aren't eating in the pub and receiving table service, don't tip the bar staff when you go to the bar to buy your drinks either per round or at the end of the night. The bar staff aren't expecting a tip and I've never seen it done.
@Lenbo29
@Lenbo29 Жыл бұрын
@@rosslogan4154 She said 45% of households drink cider not that 45% of drinks sold in pubs were cider. Crucial difference- a small group of people are very regular cider drinkers but a larger number drink it more occasionally. Agreed though re tips- big groups and people who are awkward should offer a drink to your barman. Nobody else needs to.

Something Americans in particular should note when visiting the UK is that our pints are bigger - 20oz, not 16oz. And for everyone - the best beers will be served by hand pumps or gravity feed (the barrels on high shelves behind the bar), and most traditional UK beers are brewed to taste best at cellar temperature - cool, but not cold.

London is very lucky as it still has plenty of pubs to choose from, and I think all the pubs featured in your video are in London. However, the situation in the rest of the country is not so good. Very true so many of the old traditional pubs have closed in recent years. I'm from Pompey(Portsmouth) and what I have noticed is a lot more micro breweries opening up with a bar attached which is cool. At last count Pompey still has around 160 pubs and bars which is the 2nd most in the UK. Greater London is No1 of course. Would definitely recommend a visit to Portsmouth for a pub crawl😀

@@ian_of_glos my pleasure. I'll try and keep it short but there are so many great pubs. The No1 place in my opinion to visit is Old Portsmouth which is on the seafront and steeped in history. The dolphin is Portsmouth oldest pub still going 1740 I think. The Still and West, Spice island inn and The Bridge Tavern are all very close together in Old Portsmouth. They're also next to the dockyard so you can just sit with a drink watching the boats going in and out. Albert Road in Southsea is another good place to go. It's got independent pubs and shops as well as some of the larger chain pubs. I'd say in total Albert road must have about 20 pubs and bars and even more off the side roads. Away from the touristy areas in Portsmouth I'd recommend The Rose in June which is a Independent pub with a good mix of real ales and lagers, it also has a outside bar in a large garden which is great in the summer. Staggeringly Good is a dinosaur theme brewery which also a large bar. It's right next to Fratton park. Great beer and it's holds different gigs and events throughout the year. Lastly I'd recommend The Churchillian. Not sure what chain it is but it's a bit more of a foody place but you can still go in just for a drink. It's on Portsdown hill which over Looks the whole of Portsmouth so it has great views and it has a big garden. Hope this is helpful.
