The use of veneer was not motivated by the need to make the piece cheap. The actual reason was that the woods with the best figure and chatoyancy was rare and to use it in solid furniture would have been a tremendous waste. The veneer substrate would not have been necessarily cheap wood, but rather sturdy and stable lumber that would ensure the piece would not distorted over time. Your piece looks very nice. I hope you were successful in restoring it.

This was so helpful. Just got a vintage pair of dressers and did not realize they are covered in veneer. I guess I have to paint and not sand in that case

Great info. One thing I always look for is if there are dust panels in between the drawers. I usually won’t buy a piece that doesn’t have them.

Most of the time they are English when they have dust panels.

A couple things: Veneer furniture has been around for centuries (hundreds of years before the 1930's). Some of the best, most expensive furniture ever made, was made using veneers. The piece in the video would have been a good candidate for a restoration, given the "figuring" and book matching of the drawer fronts. Just a suggestion- take some time to learn how to do that instead of defaulting to painting. Thomas Johnson has some great videos explaining how to do it. The top of the piece would have been an easy fix. Sanding, (especially with a machine) should again, not be the go-to default. A little time, effort, research, and skill will overcome and help every DIY'r to sustain estate quality, heirloom furniture instead of covering something with paint that will be condemned to the dump in ten years.

Hey, great video. Thank you! I'm curious about your channel(s) for selling the stuff you restore. Have you made a video about selling already? :) Best wishes, Dave Ferreira

This was so helpful, thank you! For drawers that have a hard time coming out, how do you make it smoother when opening and closing it?

Thanks Racheal. I have brought several vintage dining room sets with china cabnets or servers. For every set, the door of a cabinet (usually it is one side -right or left of the dresser) usually rubs against a side (bottom will have a gap, and top will be tight against the frame as you close). My husband thinks you can just sand the part that is getting rubbed, but a contractor (who sold me his mom's dresser) said he would recommend unhinging the door of the sticking cabinet, placing a toothpick on the top and bottom to make sure the door is level , and then reattaching the hinges. I guess to tighten them correctly. Your thoughts? Also, what glue do you use to reattach a veneer that is starting to peel?
