Hello from Tijuana; my aviary is 4'' from the floor, so their droppings go true the wire net. And every weekend I moved to wash every thing to my plants, the only thing that in on the bottom in a tray whit dirt which I compacted so they could take a dirt bath and a small fountain. For me, it's much better to keep it clean like that. Plus, they get all crazy flying around drinking the water in the net. Some times I put scallion, spinach, and one or two carrots. They love it. I started whit one female that flew into my house. And now I have 84 parakeets. Cheers from Tijuana

Wow! Thanks for sharing 😊 That’s a super handy and practical system! Like that it stays clean much better. Haha yeah, you start with one or two budgies and before you know it you have many 😋

What about orchid, bark and coconut husk? I’m wondering if that would be OK for my indoor aviary. Right now I have a large roll of parchment paper, but it flies up constantly.

I think sand bedding will be a good option.

Yeah, some people use it. Some downsides could be that it’s quite costly and it can get messy.

Could you make a video on how you clean the aviary?

I would love to but unfortunately we do not have the aviary anymore because we moved 😕 Pretty much the only other video about the aviary that I have is this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gN15mKuY0srXm4U.html I can see if I have enough material of when we had the aviary to make a video about how I cleaned it 😊 I can at least share some of my experiences, even if we do not have access to the aviary anymore.

Hi, how about the winter? How do you keep them warm?
@misty_blue
@misty_blue 7 ай бұрын
Our birds managed the cold surprisingly well, even when it was -15 degrees celcius. They had an area in the aviary that was closed on all sides (only with one hole to enter). There it stayed surprisingly warm because of the wood (which maintains its temperature really well). There are some people that use heaters that are especially for aviaries but I’ve never tried that myself. But budgies are quite good at keeping themselves warm because they got very used to cold climates in Northern Europe and even where they are from (the Australian desert) it can get very cold at night in winter.

what if you include some dry leaves from the trees around you..

Thanks for the tip :) In our case, we didn't have dry leaves available because we were living somewhere where it was raining almost all the time. But I think dry leaves can be an option otherwise :)

What do you think about sand? Thank you

I tried it but I personally don’t like it that much. It gets quite messy and is not that easy to clean. With humidity it gets kinda smelly as well.

Never likes the newspaper floor to me. If I got a bird (of which I plan to) I want to give it a good home with a nice floor and pretty decor

Fair enough! For us it’s more about practicality, low-cost, availability, etc. The birds don’t seem to care much about the cage floor anyway. They spend like 99% of their time on the perches, the roof, and outside of the cage 😋

Never tried special sand for the aviary?

We did try sand in a cage, but we didn't really like it. It's too dusty and not as easy to clean as wood pellets.

@@misty_blue ah alright thanks I was thinking between sand or wood I'll be going with the wood floor now thanks for the advise!
@misty_blue

@@SwirlyMite my pleasure! 😊 What I like about the wood is that it soaks up moisture, which makes the aviary much less smelly. The birds also love to forage between the pellets. We live in a wet climate, so sand was not ideal because it stays more wet.

Hm yeah, I can imagine that it gets quite messy with paper in an aviary. I think both orchid bark and coconut husk have potential. Most importantly, they should be high quality and not treated with chemicals. And I think it’s best when the pieces are not too small or stringy (I once had it that a bird’s wing got stuck in thread 😨 Thank God she’s fine though). Our birds were always playing with the wood chips in the aviary, so I noticed it was best when the pieces were medium/large size and they didn’t come with toxic elements. Hope you find a good alternative for your aviary! 😊

@@misty_blue That's really good advice. I'm striving to make things nicer. In my local store they sell apple wood and maple wood chips for kindling bbq advertising that they are non toxic and safe to use for cooking so I was thinking they would be fine for the budgies. Any thoughts?
@misty_blue
@misty_blue Ай бұрын
That sounds like a good idea since it’s also considered safe for humans to cook with 😊 And apple and maple wood are both safe for budgies.
