What to Practice Ep 8: Matt Garstka's 5 Levels of Displacement

Today we practice some beat displacement. I've seen this video of Matt Garstka a while back and decided to give it a go. Shifting the beat around while still hearing the click can be quite tricky.
But, it's a GREAT exercise for ear training!

I love how you put your practicing into the video itself, It really helps people get a look at what it takes to actually nail tough skills like these. Also in a world where it's so easy to quantize/sample/replace/over-produce audio, I really appreciate you staying true and honest. Cheers Brandon!

I've thought about this many times. The concepts are there in our minds, but they're so hard to implement! It will literally take a full 8 hours a day for a number of years to get as fluent as Matt Garstka! That's exactly what he did! Every subdivision and their displacements are so second nature to him, he can create all manner of grooves on the fly!! This is just my conjecture. I'm basing this statement on the sole fact that when I finally understood a concept so simple as triplets and six stroke rolls, my chops and fills actually improved because they came more naturally! It was that time when they became second nature that I found myself really improving and getting creative. It took many hours to get to truly understand them, I can only imagine the hours spent by Matt. For Matt, he's reached a point where he understands it all! All he relies on is unbound creativity! His countless hours, determination, and persistence are responsible for what brought about what you see in him to this day! Pure orchestration! He has ALL the necessary skills to do whatever his creative mind conceptualizes!

Brandon! Bro! Thank you! Drumming requires so many thousands of hours of tedious, hard, repetitious work, and sometimes... ya just don't wanna. This is such a great channel, because you have become, essentially, a practice buddy, someone with whom to commiserate, and ultimately to work through the challenge with, which makes it easier to make the choice to do the hard work. Well done!

Your listening skills and overall musical awareness just went up in one day. That makes you a better drummer, but most importantly, a better MUSICIAN. Training yourself to hear the relationship between what you are playing and what´s being played around you will help you lock in better and serve the music in any genre. Your number 1 task as a drummer is to provide a steady pulse in relationship to what the other musicians are playing. Feeling and stating that pulse depends greatly on your ability to adapt your beat placement to what you are listening to ( bass lines, guitar riffs, keyboard parts etc). When you displace your beat, you are back in the driver´s seat as far as CREATING THE PULSE, because when the click is on quarter notes you are just FOLLOWING the pulse that the click is providing for you. Keep practicing this at least 5 minutes a day, KZfaq drummers might not notice, but MUSICIANS will, specially on the bandstand! Peace&Groove!

For the "e" you can try a phrase of 3 16th notes(Ta Ki Ta) or (radio) on count 4 of the bar you're trying the switch from. a phrase of 5 16th notes (Ta Ti Ki Ta Dum) or (university) for the "a". Great lesson as always Brandon.

Frank Briggs has a great approach to this. He uses a 3 and 5 note groupings to displace the downbeat to the "a" or the "e". The idea is to "feel" the new downbeat and use the regular click as your checkpoint, otherwise is never gonna sound grounded. Good stuff for your ears!

Imagine yourself in tour doing 2 or 3 sets of 1h30m weekly of this displacement modulation polirhytmics oddtime shit, plus the rehearsals, plus the writing, plus recording sessions, and couple years of studying this material. yo man check out gavin harrison’s rhythmic illusions if you haven’t already. also, for triplet displacement (the third one you did) when i originally was trying to learn it, it really helped for me to count out load the triplets while playing (tri-pul-it) and it helped me a lot more, not really much for you because you got it right away, but for anyone trying to learn it.

Whats super funny is I find the displacement on the e to be easy to catch onto, however that first one really throws me for a loop. The bass just siunds so strange on the reset lol Ive found it helps to basically "upstroke" when switching for the dp in the first segment

No, thank yewwww sir. So here’s a thing I’ve been trying to find out - What style of music exactly would you call that outro track? I need a more specific genre than ‘soul’ or ‘groove’ or ‘r&b’ if there is one. I think of it as: it’s 1978, you’re driving a green Lincoln Continental with wire wheels, wearing a fur coat and a hat with a feather in it. There may or may not be coke in the glove compartment. What do you call the music on the radio? It’s a certain kind of funky, grooving soul music but I’d love to narrow it down to a term I can search lol.

Hip hop instrumentals
@DZNTZ
@DZNTZ 4 жыл бұрын
Brandon Terrill No, that’s not it at all. The style pre-dates hip hop by a long shot. I’m talking City Champs, Vulfpeck, Budos - it’s jazz, it’s funk, it’s soul, it’s all those and more than those. Yes, some of it is very hip hop relevant, but hip hop has sampled these sounds and been influenced by them, not the other way around - the sound is pre hip hop. There’s just gotta be a sub-genre here - urban groove funkjazz, idk. It’s hard to dive deeper into the tunes when you can only find similar tracks by accident. I’d love to have a search term that produced better results.

This stuff is hard to get, but it is a fun challenge .albeit aggravating to get there . But you’re correct you’ll never use it, well maybe if the band knows it’s coming, or you’ve worked it into a solo. this is the kind of thing you just don’t throw in there.. Imagine sitting in with a band that doesn’t use a Click and you go to modulating / displacing the 16th note triplet on them ... 😳 boy that get everyone’s attention... and not in a good way.
