Very clear and concise explanation. My bus started to 'buck', miss, et al. My mechanic checked it out and told me to run high octane fuel. You explanation confirms. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Cheers.

91 all day and night long. Chevron is my first choice, then Shell, and finally Mobil. Great informative video as usual.

Premium fuel all day long! Great explanation of why it’s important. I run 95 minimum, or 98 octane ideally. These may not be available depending on where you are in the world, but always go premium. Thanks Mike!

Mike I run 91 octane fuel in my car and 20w50 oil with a zinc additive and I change my oil every 1000 miles in my 67 I’ve done this for pass 20 years and I drive my 67 as a daily driver
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
that is the way to do it. easy dump and fill I dont usually change the screen out very often either always clean change the oil enough and your good to go. ZDDP is great stuff. STP has lots of it. Stay away from Quaker state and Pensoil too all good advice.

In the 70s and 80s I worked at an airport and before the company’s aircraft flew, part of the preflight we had to drain the petcock valve of any water in the fuel. I would collect this 100 octane fuel and ran it in my bug along with the leaded regular gas. It ran so sweet. I have never heard said that lead gas was for cooling. But I understand what you are referring to. For others just in case, in the early days the engine combustion which heated up the engine would cause the fuel to reach its ignition temperature during compression, the fuel would auto-ignite at the wrong time due to fuel being compressed past its ignition temperature. This would cause loss of power and damage to the engine. So, lead was added to combat fuel being compressed past its ignition temperature (cooling). Lead also reduced engine knocking (pinging), wear and tear on the exhaust valve seats, coating them with lead.

Exactly the same thing I was told back in 1990 when I bought a 1200cc 40h from car craft in riverside, Ca. Great info. Wish I never sold that car.

Unfortunately, I live in NJ and we can not get non-ethanol gas here. The gas station I go to only has 87, 89, 93. The 93 (premium) is what I put in my 2017 Jetta GLI. I'll give the premium a try in my 74 Super (1600 DP) and see how. it goes.
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
yea that is good stuff. wish we had 93 lots of ethanol in CA gas too. pretty soon I think they will make every one put in electric motors ha ha. Screwed up state I live in.

Our 1500SP had 1641 barrels and pistons fitted by the previous owner. I suspect it has higher compression than stock.. We only use it once or twice a month so paying a bit extra for some 98RON is good peace of mind.

should be good to go on that. keeps those heads a little cooler.

Lead also help protecting heads and valve stems

yup for sure the coolant for the exhaust valve was lead.

Premium gas and regular oil (not synthetic) for me. Am I correct on the oil? Thanks for the video!
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
yea synthetic is a bit thin for the engine because of leaks. castrol or kendall is the best for vw engines. in the old days we used valvoline racing but it breaks down more than castrol or kendall.

Mike, here in Brazil we just have gasoline with ethanol (27%), regular or premium. Do you think the ethanol mixture could cool the combustion chamber? We already use timming set in 15° to help to burn the 27% of ethanol.
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
usually ethanol makes your car run lean I would put a large main jet in there. If you are running stock carb about a 135 or maybe 140 main go rich and back it till it runs ok. A little on the rich side will keep the engine running cooler. you just loose a bit of MPG
@ANDRE-VW4 жыл бұрын
@@Mikefngarage I agree with you, I'm running a stock 28PCI carb, in a 1200cc engine (VW Bus 1965). The mais jet is a 117.5. What do you suggest to this main jet?
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
@@ANDRE-VW probably on a 1200 36 hp I am running 120 here and its perfect. but if it is a 40hp 1200 maybe a 122 or 125 would be better. for our fuels. In brazil maybe step them up at least 1 more. so 125 for 36 and 130 for 40. If it is too rich bring it down till it runs ok. then leave it there. if it runs sluggish and has any black smoke it is too rich.
@ANDRE-VW4 жыл бұрын
@@Mikefngarage thanks. My engine bus is an 36hp. I'll 120 and 125.

Do i have to adjust the setting on the mixture or change jets on the carburetor when i change the octane on the fuel?
@jonasthies22634 жыл бұрын
george goody no
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
no you are good to go. but you should have it richened up for the fuel today. usually 125 to 135 main jet depending on what size your engine is. Original was around 115 to 120 and that was for the non ethanol leaded fuel back in the day.
@georgegoody70644 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike, any way is a 1970 convertible 1600 original engine single Port, and I’m using an aftermarket EMPI carburetor
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
@@georgegoody7064 Oh ok those carbs are good if it is the solex replacement. your main jet should be a 127 to 130 on that engine roughly. easy to pull out it is inside the carb drain plug you pull it out and check it. Look at the number. Just to be safe. I would start with a 130 then get a 127 if it is too rich.

Lead is a lube not a cooler.
@adrianvasile4683Ай бұрын
Lead is having a cooling effect? I never heard such a thing before. Lead is increasing octane number and is protecting the valves, sealing better. For this engine with a compression ratio of 8:1, the lowest octane number is perfect. Wrong advice! If you use high octane fuel, you'll have problems starting the engine in cold weather. Very bad advice. Amazing is nobody disagree while is a well known piece of knowledge. Premium doesn't mean a better fuel, but a fuel with high octane number. Oil industry was many times criticized for using the name Premium for marketing purposes, making people believing they use a better product for their beloved cars.
