What VFL Park was MEANT to look like!

VFL Park, Waverley in Melbourne's outer east was originally intended to be a 157,000 capacity stadium, but ended up 'only' seating 77,000 spectators. Many had often wondered what it may have looked like had those original plans succeeded. Based on the only 'overall' drawing that exists, I have created a 3D model of what the stadium probably would have resembled - with some assumptions and a little artistic license...

The most colossal aspect about this venue is the carpark. Any attendance records would have been accompanied by record time trying to escape the carpark. A key failing for this venue was the lack of public transport connections.

It certainly would have been the largest stadium in the world with timber bench seating. Bring the binoculars if you are in the back row, but at least you would be among the small percentage of spectators under cover.

Terrific 3D design! Imagine if the plans actually followed through and Waverley Park did end up becoming this 157k capacity behemoth of a football stadium that can fit more people than the entire population of Darwin. The amount of records that would have been broken back then and would most likely still last today. Waverley Park would back then, and to this day, most likely be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, stadiums in the world.

The Narendra Modi Stadium in India had a recent redevelopment, and now holds 132,000 people. The Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in North Korea had a seating capacity of 150,000 until it’s redevelopment, and now it seats approximately 114,000 people. The Great Strahov Stadium in Czech Republic has a capacity of 250,000 spectators, of which 56,000 is seating. So at this proposed size, Waverley would’ve been the biggest stadium seat capacity wise. Most worldwide sporting attendance records held are for racing events. The highest crowd for a soccer game was around 200,000 held at Maracanã Stadium in Brazil, I couldn’t see an event at Waverley get near that number unless it was heavily papered. But non racing wise, Waverley could’ve held some record attendance crowds in a few different events.

I was hoping you would make this 3D model since I first seen your original VFL Park video. It would’ve been a monster if it was built to this plan, and would’ve held some incredible games packed out, they could’ve even built a roof on it at a later date similar to docklands to solve the weather issue. It’s a shame nothing really went right for Waverley since the beginning, and to its demise. Thanks for the upload.

A monster indeed. Although the design would require the spectators in the upper tiers to need binoculars, such was the size of the playing surface (very deep boundaries) and the expansiveness of the lower bowl. Still, imagine the roar of 157,000 fans!

Bear in mind that the headline figure of 157k was touted in the mid 60s & included about 45k spectators in standing room; it would only be utilized when the Grand Final was played there. By the time the league wanted to do the enlargements to the stadium in the early 80s, the scope was reduced significantly to about 110k with most spectators seated.

@@aussieboy77 The video is a modern concoction. How many times a year do you think that you'd get 157k people at a footy match. No point having that many seats. Back when the MCG's capacity was 120k, much of that was standing room, perhaps 35k.

What a brilliant 3D design! I have no doubt that one of the reasons why the original design never happened is that because the VFL/AFL didn't have the balls to go ahead with the original plans. An another thing is that the John Cain Victorian State Government never allowed the Grand Final to be played at Waverley, which ultimately prevented Waverley from being extended to 157,000. I think political forces prevented Waverley Park from achieving it's original vision. Now we have a stadium in Docklands that has a capacity of only 56,000!! Just over 100,000 less than Waverley Park's original vision! Go figure.🤔
@aussieboy77
@aussieboy77 Жыл бұрын
John Cain was a member of the MCC and he also had mates in the MCC , who obviously wanted to the GF to remain at the MCG, hence the reason he blocked the expansion plans.
@cameronjones7240

@@aussieboy77 Spot on - it was both sides of State politics that had far too much pro-MCC influence to ever allow Waverley to be fully realised. The original plan also had a spur rail line going off near Huntingdale Station - this is why North/Wellington Road has such a wide median strip, which was to allow a rail line up it. It was to be used on match days only (like the Flemington spur line for the racecourse). Whilst it would have been extraordinary to see a finished stadium, it would only ever be filled once a year, which seemed rather extravagant versus the cost. (Little bit of trivia - there was also a plan for a smaller 25-30k stadium in the SW corner too, for smaller attended games. They started the earthworks in the late 60s but never went through with it.)
@aussieboy77
@aussieboy77 Жыл бұрын
@@cameronjones7240 Thanks, I didn't know about the rail line plan. It would have been useful given that Waverley was not very accessible via public transport and car parking was a nightmare. I don't think it would have cost that much either since a straight 8km line running along a median strip would have been easy to build. I do know the VFL/Allen Aylett/Ross Oakley lobbied the state government for it but their requests were always denied and as you mentioned, we can thank the boys in the MCC for that (although Victoria was broke by '92 so once Kennett was in, any rail line plan would have been dead and buried by then anyway). All that said, I do think the expanded VFL park would have looked amazing in it's day although it would look quite dated by today's standards.

I remember seeing this design in an old football record from the late 1970’s. They should have built the ground in the unpopulated areas of the outer north or outer west. Mulgrave is in a rain belt. The north and west are drier, and are well serviced by train lines. If the ground was built in the north or west it may still be in use.
@sentimentalbloke185
@sentimentalbloke185 Жыл бұрын
Mulgrave was chosen for the specific reason that the geographical centre of Melbourne was nearby & the city's development was moving east. That's how they thought in the early 60s, that the ground needed to be in the centre of the suburbs. Of course we know today that the CBD remains as the true centre of the city but they thought differently back then.
