In Myanmar, we still use the word sasana to refer to Buddhism. When Christianity came, they also used the word sasana to translate the word " religion" to burmese. Now people think the word religion and sasana are the same in Myanmar.

It's been an interesting journey for me. I started out my journey into Buddhism and meditation two years ago basically having this channel and Sam Harris' books as a beacon, I still consider myself a noob but looking back at my past my mental health and my attitude towards others have improved greatly. Buddhism and Vipassana gave me what I was missing living as a secular person. Thanks a lot, dude. Hope you keep up your good work.

I wasn't aware that there was a term known as 'Buddhasasana' which was used to refer to the Teachings of the Buddha. Anyways I think the main problem with lables used to refer to the Buddha's teachings whether it is Buddhism or Buddhadharma is that some people tend to fixate on it too much rather than giving attention on their practice of the teachings

Second chapterEdit The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad starts the second chapter as a conversation between Ajatashatru and Balaki Gargya on theory of dreams, positing that human beings see dreams entirely unto themselves because mind draws, in itself, the powers of sensory organs, which it releases in the waking state.[14] It then asserts that this empirical fact about dreams suggests that human mind has the power to perceive the world as it is, as well as fabricate the world as it wants to perceive it. The 2nd Chapter of Brahdryanka Upanishad is involves King Ajatshatru.. He was the king of Magadha and conversations with him are heavily mentioned in Jainism and Earliest Upanishads too.. The Buddha's primary goal was to help people end suffering no matter what cast they where part of. The Buddha does seem to belive in some metaphysical realms of existence. He mentions it . Also paranormal phenomenon brought about by meditation. However that was cultural norm in his day. Yoga had been around in some form for quite some time

In indonesian ancient empire of Majapahit (13-15th century), buddhism was called 'Kasogatan', from the word 'Sugata' (one of the sanskrit epithet for Buddha Gautama meaning 'one who has gone to goodness'). Ka-an prefix in malay realms is just like -ness prefix in english. In the same way, Hinduism was called 'Kasyiwan' from the word 'Shiva'.

Edited for spelling corrections: Mister Doug, Sir, I respect your interest and information on Buddhism. I myself have had an interest for some time now after being raised in a Catholic Family who dodged all serious life questions I had with riddles and taunts as though they knew the boss and I had to speak and obey them for them to talk to him and pull strings for me. .. Without turning this into a 5000 page essay, here are some of my concerns after a lifelong exploration into religions and peoples psychology and their actions through history and present day.... How can I put this in point form? Do understand that each of these points are heavily condensed and there is a vast array of further information which should be included and scrutinized. Egyptian pharaohs, global information hub, library of Alexandria. Roman involvement and relationship with Egypt, Julius and Cleopatra. Burning of Library of Alexandria, Information is power, Egypt Exodus, Hebrew Jewish. Romans hunting down and Crucifying Jewish Leader then creating Catholicism and writing their version for all to obey. Hunting down and killing everyone who didn’t agree or obey, the crusades. [insert a few centuries of such activities here] Catholics persecuting Christians. (Catholics persecuting and executing and throwing to the lions for all to witness at the coliseum of anyone who supported the Jewish leader/profit) Present era, (Last few hundred years) ALL World leaders ordained and approved and supported by the church. (Otherwise they would not have such status. The status bestowed on them by the Roman Catholic Church.) Monarchs, Presidents all report back to the Church otherwise would not have such titles. Hitler Supported by the Catholic Church. Catholics in every country that WW2 was involved in, coincidently around the time Film and Camera became popular and easy. Roman Catholic communications established long before TV, Radio and Telephone. Mussolini Gassing Africans before WW2 (1920s) British, Monarch close ties with Church. (History of torture and Witch Trails, Executions, Slavery) The suppression of Science and facts, Hiding truth, (Against anything the Church couldn’t argue against and twist in their favor) Galileo imprisoned for last 20 years of his life for proving church wrong then CHURCH using his story for profit and their own gain long after his death like they do with everyone else. 1980s Famine appeals for money, Italians selling emerald mines to the Elon Musk Family in the 1980s while they are in western countries collecting billions for famine relief. (Media ownership and scripted emotionally aimed marketing. Literally "Give us money or they will die" Hostage campaigns.) British owned India and Hong Kong, Roman Catholic owned British. Dividing of Israel and India right after ww2 in 1947 while weapons factories still in operation and no market for weapons. Indians in upper governmental and other official departments in Australia and Hong Kong. (Permanent British representative Indian seats in Hong Kong Highest courts. Hong Kong being the Main Office of China production and Business.) The above sets the stage for the point I wish to make. Chinese attack and slaughter of Tibetan Buddhist Monks... :( "We have a problem."

Hi Doug, You probably already know that in yoga there is a posture (asana) that is called the Buddhasana. In fact, I think there are several. Fantastic! I had always hedged by using BuddhaDhamma, so your scholarly sleuthing disabusing me of my hedge is much appreciated. But to have a replacement with BuddhaSasana is a major event for me. Actually being sure of the pronunciation is another bonus- I've almost adopted the ''rule'' that with Pali words, my first natural tendency is ALWAYS wrong! I'd always loved Watt's distinction between religions and ''Dharmic paths of liberation'' - but that term is too broad. So BuddhaSasana it is. I'll surely think of you whenever I share it with my Kalyanamittas. When, in that beautiful poem, reference is made to the ''three knowledges'', do you think that refers to dukka, annata, and anicca? Thank you, Bhante!

This video is quite late, but what about "Sons of the Sakyan"? “Vāsettha, all of you, though of different birth, name, clan and family, who have gone forth from the household life into homelessness, if you are asked who you are, should reply: ‘We are samaṇas, we are sons of the Sakyan.’ “He whose faith in the Tathāgata is settled, rooted, established, solid, unshakeable by any samaṇa or brāhmaṇa, any deva or māra or brahmā or anyone in the world, can truly say: ‘I am a true son of the Blessed One, born of his mouth, born of Dhamma, created by Dhamma, an heir of Dhamma.’” Another sutta - "Now at that time, when the king's assembly had gathered and was sitting together in the royal palace, this topic of conversation arose: "Money[1] is allowable for the Sakyan-son contemplatives. The Sakyan-son contemplatives consent to money. The Sakyan-son contemplatives accept money." and On one occasion Ven. Ananda was staying near Rajagaha, at Tapoda monastery. Then, as night was ending, he got up & went to the Tapoda Hot Springs to bathe his limbs. Having bathed his limbs and having gotten out of the springs, he stood wearing only his lower robe, drying his limbs. Kokanuda the wanderer, as night was ending, also got up & went to the Tapoda Hot Springs to bathe his limbs. He saw Ven. Ananda from afar, and on seeing him said to him, "Who are you, my friend?" "I am a monk, my friend." "Which kind of monk?" "A son-of-the-Sakyan contemplative." and "See, masters, the handiwork of the Sakyan-son contemplatives. They're shameless, these Sakyan-son contemplatives: unvirtuous, evil-natured, liars, unholy, though they claim to be practicing the Dhamma, practicing what is harmonious, practicing the holy life, speakers of the truth, virtuous, fine-natured. They have no quality of a contemplative, no holy quality" What do you think?

@@DougsDharma I'd recommend a very scholarly book on this question: "The snake and the mongoose: the emergence of identity in early Indian religion" by Nathan McGovern (2019, Oxford University Press) Quotes from the book: I will argue that instead of understanding Buddhism and Jainism as metahistorically opposed to a preexisting Brahmanism, which later then reacted to their challenge to create Hinduism, we should understand all three traditions as having emerged out of a period of dialectical identity formation. My critique forces us to rethink modern discourses in India that are predicated on the naïve acceptance of “the Brahman” as a stable and self- evident agent in Indian history. It also forces us to rethink our understanding of religion more broadly, since the model of Indian religions is inextricably intertwined with the modern construction of “world religions,” predicated as it is on the Western category of “religion” itself.

Well all I can say is that I share a deep disappointment with the ruling, which is based upon a conservative Christian understanding of the origin of personhood. Many religions, not to mention secular beliefs, do not associate the origin of personhood with conception. Further, many medical conditions require abortion in order to save the life of the mother. If these are outlawed, it will condemn actual persons to death.
