_________________________________________________
There’s a moment towards the end of Episode 4 of the Season 4 of The Chosen that has left people so confused. As Jesus sees Zebedee pressing olives, he gets deeply emotional. It is almost as if he is suffering.
Now, Jesus has just come from a really intense and painful conversation with his disciples. But this emotional moment in front of the olive crusher seems to be about something more, something deeper.

Even the strongest have moments of fatigue. Jesus certainly demonstrated that at the end of this episode. Looking at the stones pressing those olives symbolizing the enormous stress he was feeling then and in the near future. But I especially liked when Gaius, who doesn't say a single word, notices Jesus is troubled with despair and simply hugs him. Often times in life, it's much more meaningful to simply look and listen rather than thinking of something clever to say. Well done!

Please correct me if my interpretation is slightly different. In the last scene, Jesus is sad and troubled, thinking about the cup of suffering that will come in the future. Then, He sees Gaius, who is a Gentile and yet believes in Him. Jesus is reminded that He is doing this for Gentiles as well, so that those who believe will not perish. This comforts Him. 🥺🥺 Thank You Jesus❤ I love you so much🥺

My words exactly. I think it was about his impending suffering and persecution that nobody understood at that time except him. John and James asked his permission to sit at his right and left but they had no idea what Jesus was going to have to do to make that possible or what they were going to have to go through to be his honored disciples. The emotional pain must have been excruciating to Jesus. His human side was in torment. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities... - Isaiah 53:5

A bit to add - Jesus prayed three times in the Garden...like olives were pressed three times, our savior was pressed 3x in the Garden. From what I understand, the first press of olives was used as priestly anointing oil, He is our King anointed, the second used for food (He is the bread of life!) and the third used for lanterns (He is the light of the world)! That scene in S4 E4 was for me the second best ending of any episode (S2 E3 was my favorite). What a great show based on our amazing Lord!

I think Gaius, in the last scene when he encounters a sorrowful and suffering Jesus, also has some realization of what might be to come for Jesus. He mentioned with Peter and Matthew that Rome wants Jesus gone. He recognized that Jesus also knows this, which is why I think that hug was so meaningful…comforting him for the suffering that is now and to come.

Episodes 4-6 of this season were soul-stirring, as so many episodes are. But in these episodes, the movement toward Jesus' fulfillment of the prophecies seems to create a new pace for the viewer to keep up with and absorb. The range of emotions and quick shifts in those emotions is everywhere in these episodes. And, we see so many perspectives on what is happening. It's outstanding. More than anything, Jonathan's ability to portray the range of emotions is anointed. This is truly one of his callings. And, the ending of episode 4 brought me to tears. What a moment! That was a moment where the need was great, and the comfort came from an unexpected source of faith.

What a perceptive and thought-provoking commentary 👌 It is almost unbelievable the talent that is portrayed by the actors. Obviously, Jonathan Roumie perfectly captures Jesus's character. Especially when delivering lines from scripture, the message in every aspect of his delivery allows the audience grasp the meaning of the words. At the of the emotional rollercoaster of Episode 4, there were handfuls of kleenex all around me. But, my cheeks hurt from smiling. Thank you, The Chosen 👌🙏🏻🤗

Gethsemane means THE OLIVE PRESS. Christ knew he would take upon himself our sins. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He prayed and sweat great drops of blood as he began to take our sins upon Him self. He knew He would do this and His reaction to the olive press is so bittersweet. What makes this scene so wonderful is that He needs a hug and it's Gius who gives it to Him.❤😢❤

That final sequence is so incredibly powerful. For me, with the imagery of the press and Jesus' emotional reaction to what it represents to Him, His suffering on our behalf couldn't be more poignantly illustrated. I know The Chosen team will handle the actual Crucifixion masterfully, but this sequence is enough to break my heart with the enormity of what He endured on our behalf. Kudos to The Chosen team for taking us there even before they more literally take us there.

Hey Brandon. Thanks for your insights about the olive press. The scene that caught my attention was when Gaius arrived home. What caught my eye was his extinguishing of the candles at the household shrines to his pagan gods -- extinguishing the candles is an act of disowning these false gods. He is expressing that he now believes in and worships Jesus, whom he now owns as his God. This could be seen as an extension of his calling Jesus "Lord / Dominus", because his former loyalty was to Caesar as his dominus for Caesar also claimed to be a "son of god." As St. Paul states in 1 Corinthians, no one can call Jesus Lord except by the Spirit of God. Hallelujah! Jesus is Lord!!!

Yes, it took a while, but the moment was very moving. I thought the death of Rameh, not so much, we didn't need that or having Thomas broken after they used so much of the scripts to have the public get to know her and then see her die. That was very moving and being Catholic and hearing the words he says on his knees, before we have communion ,gave me goosebumps.

I knew exactly why Jesus had such an emotional reaction to the olive pressing. Our ladies group had a Bible Study a few years back called “The Rock, the Road and The Rabbi” by Kathy Lee Gifford and Rabbi Jason Sobel. He explained this so well in that study and it is pictured here in The Chosen so beautifully. I recommend that Bible Study because you learn so much about Jewish life and their customs.

Thank you for your explanation of this scene. It is such a beautiful and touching moment. I believe you are spot on in describing what is happening at the end of this episode. It is a foreshadowing of what is coming in the Garden of Gethsemane as Jesus’ intense suffering will cause drops of blood to come from his pores. He took upon himself the weight of the sins and sorrows and suffering of all mankind. It’s incomprehensible to imagine that kind of pain. I loved that Gaius found him in that moment. He was like the Angel that came to Jesus while he was in the Garden and strengthened him. Gaius was also representing each and every one of us who Jesus suffered for and gave his life. It must’ve been a comforting reminder to Jesus that this was who he was atoning for and that we were worth it. He is what makes us worthy. ❤

Right at the beginning of the oil press scene as he was looking on at them working together, close friends, lots of love and how they loved Him. I could swear he murmured something about family and I burst into tears. Jesus was human. He had a mom a dad brothers, sisters, friends, followers and the disciples and He was leaving all that. I just felt the humanism in Jesus at that moment where I thought how sad it had to be to know you’re going to die and leave his family.

Brandon, you're spot on in the olive illustration but you missed something just as big. The embrace with Gaius at the end was mind-blowing. Gaius has just come to faith in Jesus, calling him Lord. His servant/son is healed, and he tells his family about Shalom. Peace has come to their house. His sins are forgiven. Yes, it's wild that the disciples don't get it when this Gentile does, but Gaius coming back to Jesus at the end is no accident. Gaius embracing Jesus while the two of them are weeping is a picture of the profound depths of redemption. Gaius in scarlet, Jesus in white. "Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow" - Gaius' world has been healed, restored, and brought peace, while Jesus is preparing to pay the price for Gaius' sins--the cost of giving him that peace--and be crushed. Gaius weeps with thanksgiving, Jesus weeps at the burden. I don't think Gaius understood the cost of his freedom, but he is thankful. And so am I.

You guys have turned an old house into a home especially when you could bring your kitty home 😍 Shame you have probably had no time to make a few friends in the area so they could help with the heavy furniture 🤗

Would of loved to hear your take on Gaius embrace and moment with Jesus. I think he knew what the Lord is going to do, thus pointing to the gentiles revelation of the Christ ?

My favorite scene in the episode, lots of different Interpretations but what I got is obviously Jesus DREADED the cross, he was human! He knew what he had to do and he dreaded it. The disciples were frustrating him and not understanding and he obviously felt alone watching the Olive press, and then Gaius comes back and reminds him almost the true importance of the reason why he is to die on the cross for our sins, the redemtion of man

I was doing so well, until the end when Jesus tried to fake a smile at Gaius, then him understanding, then them hugging. That was sad😢

I think this is a beautiful and possibly spot on explanation of what Jesus may actually have been experiencing at that time in his ministry. ❤

When I was watching it, I was thinking of the wine press of God, and even the translation of Gethsemane as “The Olive Press.” The wine press refers to the wrath of God upon unbelievers, now although Jesus wasn’t an unbeliever or a sinner, during the crucifixion He (His humanity) was treated as such as He was imputed with the sins of all believers. And the Olive Press is obviously where Jesus began to feel the imputation of all the sins of believers.

When I seen this part of Jesus looking at jebediah smashing the olives and at the Marion the first thing I thought of was he's going to miss them terribly when he's gone. That reality is hitting him that he is going to leave this Earth soon and how he's going to miss them all , and you can tell in other scenes that he's getting a little bit more aggressive in his tone towards the apostles

...but after all that, Gaius was there to let him know at least the message is getting through, and there is hope. This is the division he causes. Some people see it, and some don't. This is how to separate the good fish from the bad.

At the end scene between Gaius and Jesus; this may have been unintentional but here is the Son of God who just explained to his disciples the price that He will pay and they aren’t getting it, then a Gentile who knows what lurks to silence Jesus and understands the importance of His message and gets what price it’s going to be, embraces the Lord not just with thanksgiving for the miracle just given, but with deep agape and earthly understanding of what the price will be. Basically as the Father in heaven revealed to Simon-Peter who the Son of God is, it was revealed to a Gentile the price and the look on Gaius’ face in the embrace at the end may have been a farewell.
