It's a trick. Give someone a box, tell them to never open it. Same as placing two people in a field full of fruit trees, telling them that they can eat fruit from all but this one. Obviously, the box will be opened, the fruit will be eaten. Human psychology 101, tell people "NOT" to do, what you want them to do.

i once read a version of the myth that gave another reason for there being "hope" in the jar, and it is that is "false hope"; so it was maybe the worst evil the gods could give a lie that makes you think that there is some reason to continue when there is none. So uou continue to suffer hoping someday things would be better but it will never be better.

@@MystOfMythology Let’s just put it this way. The Greeks’ worship of the Olympians wasn’t one of adoration. The Greeks were, in fact, terrified of the Olympians, who were generally seen as tyrannical. Especially the male Olympians and Hera. Even Athena, normally the sanest of the bunch, was depicted as heartless at times-for instance, turning Medusa into a monster for Poseidon’s rape of Medusa or changing Arachne into a spider for either (a) being a better weaver than Athena or (b) being Athena’s equal in weaving, yet weaving a tapestry that offended the goddess by depicting the Olympians in the unfavorable light the mortals saw them in.

Wait- does it really count as a cautionary tale against undue curiosity if Pandora was set up on purpose to fail? She was kinda just made out of clay- zapped into existence, and Zues set her up to prove a point to other people. I dont understand why the focus of the story is Pndora not keeping the lid on when the game was SO rigged, and she didn't even know she was playing 😂

Actually, from what I've read, this's twisting Hesiod's works to make it sound nicer. That quote actually belongs to Epimetheus. Pandora didn't open the box after days of fighting her curiosity, she didn't even express any curiosity, she just smiled and dumped the jar out the moment Epimetheus said "I do".

Way I heard it, it was reversed: Prometheus decided to prank Zeus by screwing up his selection of sacrifice, then when Zeus retaliated by taking the fire that Man already had away, he stole it back. Then Zeus punished him for the theft, not the prank. Also, from what I understand the "curiosity" part is at best a regional variation, if not a later addition. Hesiod's first description of Pandora had her and women in general as the core curse: charming men, making them love her, acting like an ally when times were good, then quickly abandoning them with nothing when times were bad and leaving them with no one at the end. He admitted that some men found good brides, but only rarely. His next version was the first mention of the jar, and there was no mention of curiosity or of her being given it as a wedding gift. She just had it with her when she arrived, and the moment Epimetheus accepted her as a gift she immediately dumped out the contents. BTW, I'd also heard that "hope" wasn't really seen as a good thing back then. Like, it was seen more as a foolhardy self-deception, so while the world was filled with horror, men would be unable to let go of this idiotic false hope that things will get better. And sure enough, it wasn't long after that that Zeus destroyed that particular age of man and made a new one. I believe that was the golden age, the happiest age, though it might have been the silver age that was killed for their lack of proper reverence. Regardless, no, Zeus was not some merciful deity that "didn't really want to destroy mankind" and gave them hope to keep them going, he was an arrogant SOB who destroyed the human race anytime they displeased him. Kind of fitting for a god who would rape woman after woman, including several of his own granddaughters. Last, I think it's interesting to note the other names and their meaning: Prometheus means "foresight", indicative of his ability to see mankind's potential and try to help them as well as his warnings not to accept anything the Olympians offered, while Epimetheus means "hindsight", indicating his inability to see any sort of dangers or really notice any potential consequences of any action, instead only able to mourn afterward from knowledge of just how much his actions screwed things up.

Hey, thanks for that deep dive into the Pandora story! You're spot on about the different takes on Prometheus and Zeus - it's like every version adds a new twist to their saga. Hesiod painted her and other women as the bad guys, a stark contrast to today's takes. Maybe he was a bitter about a past relationship (well actually I’ve read he was) The jar story's a rabbit hole of interpretations, especially with the old Greek view of hope as more delusional than uplifting. The ethnology of Prometheus and Epimetheus almost made it in to the video, so I completely agree with your point. Awesome insights! It's great to see someone else geeking out over these myths. You sound like someone I’d love to have in my Discord chat. Link in the description if you’re interested.

Hope wasn't any sort of mercy. Hope was the Curse. All evil happens to you from the outside. But Hope is the Evil that gets you from Inside. Ancient Greeks didn't beleive Hope was a good or posative thing. Hope lead to resentments, resentments lead to despair, despair leads to inaction, inaction lead to death. Cultures Outside the Greek Cultures interpreted Hope by their own societal norms, and this interpretation is what is spread today.

False hope. It stops us from seeing our true faults, and possibly fix them, instead of sitting on our backsides hoping for ‘something’ better in the all too brief future. We do this all the time, because ‘hope’ is evil, that’s why it’s in the box. Otherwise it would be inconsistent. Zeus knew it would be a backhanded curse. The gods are cruel and use us as mere playthings and yet we are expected to worship them. Bas bosses everywhere you look.

That fits with what I've heard: in ancient Greece, "Hope" wasn't a capacity to keep going with a belief that things could get better, but more along the lines of a mad delusion that led to stupid choices that'd bring even more pain. Basically, the world is filled with hellish torture, but we're left with a voice inside that keeps egging us on into the next nightmare.

@@AllanMogensenreread that story carefully...it is short. Serpent entered the garden and her presence Asked her"What do you want?" She said we need nothing, for we may eat of anything in the Creators garden. Serpent said ???ANYTHING????...What about that tree over there? Oh if we eat of that we'll die. You won't die (IOW The Creator is a liar) Oh, OK, I want it now...hey Man...give this new thing a try. The snake I've never seen before told me it was good. These are human lessons if they aren't historic fact, they are still psychological and spiritual lessons. The serpent is a duplicitous salesman, and The Woman had no sales resistance. The serpent created a want and overwhelming desire that she did not already have. The Woman then convinced The Man to violate the rules of the estate and steal the forbidden treasure. Remember in the previous chapter Adam was created as a gardener to tend the planted garden. The woman created to aid the man and comfort his loneliness. The garden DID NOT BELONG TO THEM. So go ahead and sit in the boss' chair, put your feet up and drink his liquor....he won't fire you. The devil always asks "What do you want?". If you don't want for anything, he will gladly point something out to you....just like TV.

It is true that hope is a fire. In truth, three things remain: faith, hope, and love. How do we strengthen them? To strengthen hope, keep good secrets. As Prometheus did when he presented the pile of bones to Zeus and reserved the pile of good food for the humans, hope is strengthened by boasting in one’s weaknesses in order to hide one’s good deeds or strengths. This practice of keeping good secrets is called virtue.

If you had a life without suffering then you wouldn't need hope. It probably would be a better life. To analogise it's like the difference between living in the UK and living in the US - if they get sick they have to hope their insurance covers it whereas we have the NHS and as long as the medicine isn't experimental or hyper expensive we don't have to worry. They also have to hope they don't get shot whereas there are so few guns in the UK firearms deaths are barely in double digits, we don't have to hope for it. I know which life I prefer.

If there was no suffering, what need of hope?
@MystOfMythology
@MystOfMythology 7 ай бұрын
It's a great (and massive) question. Hope helps us deal with tough times and gives us the strength to keep going. Even though suffering is hard, it can also help us grow and understand others better. The story tells us that having both hope and suffering is part of what makes life full of ups and downs, and that hope is especially important to help us through the hard times. The point is that we don't find happiness because of a lack of suffering, we find happiness when we overcome it.

Hope is the worst one. You can't have "hell" (as in eternal torture) without hope. You can get used to pain n suffering, accepting that reality, but hope , hope changes everything, you don't adapt you follow hope instead...then hope is demolished & the endless cycle of suffering continues. Sorry to bring it down, but that's your experience right now, welcome my friend, guess that near miss wasn't a miss, n I'd thought I was good too. OH WELL, at least now you know the secret.

I’d have to respectfully disagree. The acceptance of suffering - no matter how bad - leads to both physical and mental defeat. There are examples where war prisoners who could have accepted the defeat, chose instead to keep their spirits high, kept hope in their hearts, and even made the most of the situation such as playing soccer with their keepers to keep there spirits alive. On the other hand we also as a race need some level of suffering. I have a friend who from the outside had “everything“ but was unhappy. I’ve said this before in another comment, but happiness comes from overcoming challenges and struggles, not the absence of them. But I want to say thank you for watching the video and the comment. I love that there are different thoughts and we can debate it here. Thanks for being brave and sharing. 🙌

@@MystOfMythology Yeah, I was kinda speaking from personal perspective n maybe I didn't actually make it outta that car accident n I just don't realise it. One thing after another n another yrs n yrs, n hope only comes along when I've had enough. I go for hope, I root/cheer for hope. N than hope Fs off n it's worse than before (health issues, family,ore health) so combining some philosophy with logic, this is what makes sense to me. My therapist/psychologist can't explain it, no self analysis unlocking things, nope, just "hell", mine, ci assume that most of the rest of you should VERY MUCH follow your philosophy. I'm not a teenager, I've got one, I'm degrees n intelligent, I loved to challenge myself to my max potential. This is different, I'm not in that, used to apply to me but now, not after the accident 6yrs ago. N it was only me in the car so he's good. I guess I didn't think it would be taken as something I was applying to people not in hell...but I'm shite at explaining abstract things or philosophical (for lack of proper words - n not delusion I've the white coats n I'm still here). So I apologise for that. I hate to have inspired good living people to give up on themselves. Not what I'd meant at all.

Hear me out Pandora's box reminds me of the briefcase and pulp fiction when Samuel l Jackson came into the apartment and John Travolta opened it up and Samuel Jackson said hey do we have it yeah we definitely have it supposedly that was supposed to be Marcel Wallace's soul so that's what I look at it as Pandora's box The briefcase from pulp fiction some people might not agree with me that's fine I'm fine with that
