This video is an opinion piece on what I consider to be the best Torpedo bomber of WW2. I also cover torpedo bombing in general and the various types of aircraft that did it.

Update, I want to address to common points/questions that keep coming up in the comments.
1. I said in the video "The Japanese were caught down low when the U.S. dive bombers came in and they couldn't defend the fleet, they were out of position down low because they had been dealing with the torpedo bombing threat" That's an exact quote of what I said in the video.
Numerous people have pointed out that in the book Shattered Sword the author makes it clear that the Zeros had plenty of time to climb back up between the torpedo and dive bombing attacks. That's true, but if you read or go back and listen to what I said, nothing is in disagreement with this. I'm not saying the Zeros didn't have the time or ability to reach the dive bombers, I'm saying they didn't reach the dive bombers specifically because they were out of position when the dive bombers showed up and thus were unable to attack them. Why were they out of position? I think the answer to that is obvious. They had incurred at least two torpedo attacks from the US at that point, and certainly knew how effective torpedo bombers could be (Pearl Harbor, Repulse etc.). Had the US torpedo bombers not been there, I think it's much more likely the Zeros would have been up high and ready to intercept the dive bombers.
2. Alternating sides when torpedo attacking a battleship was a common tactic. This was used from the time the Prince of Wales was sunk by Japanese Torpedo planes around the start of the Pacific war in Dec. of 41, and the Musashi was sunk with this tactic in Oct. of 1944. That's most of the Pacific war, the vast majority of sinking at least in terms of significant warships were during that period. Some of you are saying that attacking Musashi on both sides was a mistake and that the US Navy learned from it and attacked Yamato on one side.
First of all, I'm not advocating tactics here, but I'm pointing out a fact, and the fact is that attacking on the up side of a listing ship was safer and was done. What I said in the video is that this was done, and stated the logic behind it. In regards to the Musashi vs. Yamato sinkings there is a lot more going on here than just the side to side issues. The Yamato was attacked on one side to make here more likely to sink faster. However I think people are missing the fact that the attacks on Musashi were spread out over a five hour period giving damage control a lot of time to try to save the ship. Even after the last attack she floated another 4 hours or so.
All the attacks on Yamato leading to her sinking took place over about an 80 mins period in which she was hit by around 11 torpedoes and 6 bombs. In that amount of time, meaning the first 80 mins of the attacks on Musashi she had been hit by one bomb which didn't explode and 1 torpedo. That's vastly different. The next attack which came about 90 mins from the first added another 3 torpedoes and two bombs one of which didn't detonate. It went on like this for about 5 hours. I think the difference in the total number of hits required to sink the two ships had as much to do with time as with the side to side issue, but that's just my opinion. Obviously any talk along these lines is just speculation.

Thanks for covering the Turkey, I honestly thought it may simply be too boring for you to ever do a video on, but 75yr after it was built, there’s nothing boring about them today lol (especially if you can see one up close!)

The Swordfish must have been a roomy aircraft, as they were crewed by real men with balls the size of cantaloupes. Kudos and respect, Gentlemen!

But, if you were including the land based bombers as well Greg, then the Bristol Beaufighter would have to be right up there. Masses of axis tonnage sunk thanks to the Beaufighter, multiple theatres of operation including the north Atlantic, Mediterranean and the Pacific. Flying from Malta alone they sank an average of 54,000 tonnes of axis shipping per month for a 9 month period. That is pretty impressive.

I really have nothing to add here except my sincere gratitude to you, Greg, for making these outstanding videos. As an aviation history buff and current military pilot, it's been difficult to find any channels that really go much beyond a surface level when it comes to the history and performance of warplanes. I haven't found any other channels that go into the pertinent details in such a straightforward, relaxed, and easy to follow manner that yours does. I subscribe to a lot of channels and have been watching youtube for many years, and yours is the first channel I have subscribed to via Patreon. I wish you continued success and hope you continue to get as much out of making these videos as we get out of watching them. Thank you!

The TBF/TBM was such a leap in capability that it took USN commanders some time to learn how to exploit it. Having an aircraft able to search out as far as an Avenger with a relatively high cruising speed plus excellent on board electronics was a revelation. It did take a while for the Mk 13 torpedo to become as good as the Avenger, but they finally had them working reliably and surviving higher speed and altitude drops later in the war...

The Sword Fish.…!!! if you take into consideration tonnage sunk IE the Toranto Raid (that was copied by the Japanese to attack Pearl) the Bismark, U-boats and everything else the "string bag", an out of date biplane with an open cockpit and top speed of 90 Mph sank more tonnage than any other allied plane. Major issue poor range.

Seems the torpedo bomber is the hardest plane to design. The English solved the problem by sticking to simplest design possible. When they build a sophisticated design it was a turkey. The avenger was brilliant but failed by a terrible constricting torpedo.. When that issue was sorted the plane lived up too it's full potential. Love your work...

Minor correction: the time between VT-6 attacking and when the first SBDs started diving was enough for the A6Ms to reach the latter's altitude. The main flaw of the Japanese CAP wasn't their ability to respond to threats at varying altitudes, it was their inability to respond to attacks developing simultaneously from multiple directions. The book "Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway" by John Parshall and Anthony Tully covers this myth fairly thoroughly.

What Greg said about relative ease of egress explained a lot of why George H. W. Bush got out of his Avenger, but his two crewmen did not.

There is one thing that seems to go under the radar, when discussing torpedo bombers. The weapon itself!

When I was in Boy Scouts our troop leader told us one time when he was in the Navy he was flown from the carrier he was on to a different carrier. He wasn't air crew. He was either an electrical or electronics rating. They flew him over on a TBF-3R. When it came time to go back they were already headed for port. He asked if he could just stay on board the rest of the way. The landing scared the heck out of him.

Kermit Weeks has stated that in his opinion the TBF/TBM is the easiest WW2 plane to fly. Which was good for all the inexperienced Ensigns and J.G.'s that took it to war.

That was an incredible revelation of countless factors that contributed to the outcome of the War in the Pacific (PC). As much as I know about airplanes, I always learn more from you, every time you post your excellent content.
