My sand wedge is a 56 and it’s my fav club in my bag. Even over the years whenever I’ve gotten new irons I keep the same SW because it’s so versatile. I can use it in every way from 85 yards in. From the fairway, rough, sand, lob, bump and run…whatever, I know I can get it within 3 feet of the hole 🕳 💪🏽

I use my 52 degree around the green. I have PW is 43, AW 48, GW 52, SW 56, LW 60. I feel comfortable with the 52 as I can hit it normal, close the loft for bump and run or open the loft up. It’s one of my most used clubs

I prefer using one setup and one swing feel, different clubs for different shots. I also see the benefits of using one club for different shots, increases touch and feel. However practice, practice and more practice. Simply is always best👍

Excellent explanation of how to use a single wedge for different situations when chipping around the green. Pretty much use the same techniques. I use a 56° Vokey and my Taylor Made P-790 PW with a 45° loft for all my work around the green. This has improved my one-putts drastically.

good tutorial. For 15 years, I've used a simple approach with only one decision required between 2 clubs - 56/0 for chipping (low flight) and 60/12 for pitching (high flight, incl bunkers).

That's all we had when I was learning golf, a PW and a SW. I learned to use them both and find this four-wedges scene confusing. Loft adjustments are made by grip position. Heck I have no idea what my PW loft is (as if I play it square ever). I'll go look it up. It's 50 or 51. The modern version of the same iron has a 46 degree face, I suppose if I had a modern set of clubs an extra wedge would do. As it is I'll just keep my 2-iron in the bag.

Great video Matt love the simple explanation as I’ve always been confused as to which wedge to use when and where and yes I need to practice this more but oddly when I go to either putting green ( which has a chipping area ) or the driving range which also has 3 greens 10,30&50yards away and a sand trap I do okay but on the course I’m more inconsistent , I may not concentrate as much for whatever reason 🤷‍♂️

I like hearing this from a pro. I think learning to deal with just the one wedge to begin with helped me improve my game faster. I played that way for years and thought myself pretty good around the greens. Today I still want to default to the gap wedge (a Mizuno 50°) but I've done my time on the practice range with all my wedges now so I'll choose the one I think best suited to the distance and trajectory/spin I need now.
@golfmetrics5088
@golfmetrics5088 Жыл бұрын
Matt’s way is the best way here, Holmer. Choose 1 club around the green. Trust us! We guarantee it will improve your green-side scoring. Btw, Ben Hogan did this VERY thing. In fact, I think his preference from 100yds in was to ALWAYS play his sand wedge.
@holmer9413

@@golfmetrics5088 Seve didn't. lol And neither did Annika Sorenstam whose advice I've followed for years. She advocated we practice hitting shots to a specific distance with at least 3 different clubs. I make a special point of following that advice where my short game is concerned. And because of that, not many will bet against my short game. I'm a regular Phil according to the guys whose money I keep taking in our nightly skins game. But I believe I mentioned before I have our communities short game sized range just outside my back door. From 80 yards and in, I'm deadly with any wedge in the bag and a few more clubs for good measure. But also like I said, I still default to my sand wedge. It's my go to and for good reason. I keep a 60 with 5 degrees of bounce. A 56 bent to 55 with 10 degrees of bounce and a 50 with 8 degrees of bounce. Each of those clubs does something better than the others. The lob is a dream in a soaking wet bunker. It can cut through wet sand like it's nothing. The sand has more bounce making it more forgiving when faced with an uphill lie into the grain on our Bermuda grass we have here in Florida. So if you do the work, do your research, I have to disagree and stick with Annika on this one. Ultimately it's the best option because it brings more options to the table. But that said, learn on well first is never bad advice.

Before seeing this I had already pulled my lob from the bag because I never used it and my 50* became only for full swings with it matching my iron set. I started doing this and people said I was weird and to just use the correct wedge vs changing the face angle. Thanks for the confirmation that I can do this and it not be weird

I go 54 which some days felt like my handicap index when trying so many different ideas. A golf teacher echoed your sentiments in a short game lesson. Use the 54 (or 56) for all the chipping/short pitch shots to get confidence then once you’ve learned it well feel free to work in a Lob or Gap or Pitching wedge for any yardage situations that seem appropriate. The sole on my lob screams sand club while the grinds on the PW and GW scream full shots. Cleveland CBX2s (46, 50, 54) although the lob is the 58 degree Smart Sole 4 by Cleveland. It sees the sand and maybe thick grass situations. Practice! Yep, I’ll try the same shots off the mat or green side with all the wedges to still see what each does reaffirming that I need to simplify and become a beast with one wedge when up close.

Great video. I used to play a PW and only 2 specialty wedges (52 degree gap / 56 degree sand), using the gap wedge for predominantly full swings and the sand wedge for everything else. At the beginning of last season, went to 3 specialty wedges (added a 60 degree lob wedge), using each as all the instructional videos tell you, and totally destroyed my short game. Plus, I've looked at my stats and found that I might only use that lob wedge once per every12 rounds or so. I'm going back to PW-GW-SW and NOT looking back!

Hear hear. I truly don't care for the 60° - it's a speciality club that requires a ton of practice to see practical benefits. Opening the face of a 56° is good enough to get the job done. The only time I've ever used a 60° or seen it being used is when trying to get cute. I replaced it in my bag with a 18° 3h to fit the gap between my 3w and 3i.

I put together a set of four wedges SW, Gap, Ptiching and an older series Lob wedge. I hate the lob wedge. It throws wild in my hands. Good loft but over a 45 degree dispersion. Now, it is a Callaway X-12 vs. all the rest of my Rogue X irons . . . but I don't think that is so material. It may be that it is so alien in feel to all my other irons that I get wild shots.

Had a scratch handicap for over 20 years. My wedge cane was the reason. My short game was dominated by a PW or 8 iron. I modified a 2 iron to be the same exact length and lie as my 8. Used it to put from around the collar . I’m currently a 9 because I’m 71 and much shorter with every club. Still using clubs made in 83 but with a senior flex shaft and a 12 degree driver and 20 degrees fairway wood

I do what you just mentioned... 8 iron to lob wedge. Always the same exact chip swing, then let the loft control the height and distance. I know the distance for each club with that swing. Seems easier and more consistent than learning multiple swings. I do use my 8 iron, kind of like a putter, for all shots just off the green, for bump & runs. We all learn what works for us.

I would imagine the basics all apply. I do all of these with a 60* lob wedge. Just practice, practice, practice. I got comfortable in college just taking a putter and lob wedge to the practice green because it was free :)

Are use three wedges only-my pitching wedge, my sand wedge and my lob wedge. Ball position and opening or closing the club face dictates the degree of the club. I don’t need 4 wegdes. Slope and speed of the greens and my type of lie determines which one I use

I want this one to feel like my 8 or 9 iron? Use your 8 or 9 iron for it then. You'll still use a 54º more commonly, but forcing your 54 to do something better done by a different club is a mistake. Use the one you want. If you choke down, do it. But don't restrict yourself to manipulated shots.

If you could only afford one wedge at the moment, which loft would you suggest?

if your set has a pw & sw already, then i'd look at a lob wedge.
