@arun2794 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that he wrote all three books as one big story, start to finish over 10+ years. He took out one short story from it to enter into a writing competition and won which got him a publishing deal, and since then, he's been re-writing and re-editing the original story. But any addition or deletion he made in book one cascades to book two, and changes in that leads to even more changes in three, so re-writing becomes more and more complex. I'm guessing that's what's delayed the book so much, he would probably be writing quicker if he was starting fresh. But he does not talk about how well his writing is going or how much he's completed, so it's hard to say when it will be released, which is frustrating to us a little.

He admitted that yes there is a woman the character in question is based on, and told an anecdotal story about a local eccentric his dad knew. The important point is he didn't name names or put a target on anyone's back. Even his craziest fans only have a nickname the townspeople made up for some guy who liked to cosplay as a mole. The answer he gave was entertaining, and elaborated on his writing process, while keeping everyone anonymous enough that Rothfuss's craziest stalker can't latch onto a real life person.

@svensorensen76933 жыл бұрын
"He didn't answer the question!" Except that he did, just not directly. The entire point of Tunnel Bob/Auri story is about how they may share some key characteristics, but they are completely different people. The woman Denna is based on (who he confirmed exists) is not Denna, doesn't act like Denna, and for all we know is his wife. If he said who it was, people would assume that she was Denna and would contact her with the intention of "white knighting" for an author they barely know.
@eivind2610933 жыл бұрын
Well said, sir and/or madam! I agree completely. It's important to be able to separate real life from fantasy - even if some part of Denna, even the parts that a lot of people dislike, is based off of a real life person, that doesn't mean they're the same person. Could be he cherry picked traits from a whole bunch of different people, or could be he chose one key, interesting trait of a person, only to build his own, brand new character around that trait - like with Auri.
@LadyLocket3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. all it takes is for him to know a woman whos looks or mannerisms makes the writer think 'what if someone like her was evil or crazy or heroic or a goddess'. The writer could also have a character who they have fully written out what they will do, their motives and impact on the storyline but just can't pin down how they will move, speak or dress. Then at a dinner party meets a person and boom their voice or looks fit the character the writer has been struggling to picture. Rabid fans hating on you is already bad enough for actors who actually sign up to play evil/bad characters (look at Joffrey's actor), could you imaging just being an ordinary, quiet, private office worker and suddenly the internet hates you.
@jacobvardy3 жыл бұрын
Just to hammer this home. If Denna is based on someone in Rothfuss' life, then Rothfuss is Kvothe. Kvothe is a self obsessed teen who doesn't understand the subject of their affection. Fair enough, understanding people is hard, and teens have less experience. What Rothfuss is saying is that he fucked up his relationship with "Denna".

A lot of people seem to hate Denna and it baffles me. All I see is a hurting, confused person whose life is a tragedy, whose interactions are botched. The idealisation that Kvothe has of her reminds me of myself in my early teenage years, where you kind of forget that the counterpart is a real human being, flawed and all. To finish this train of thought, Denna seems to be a trauma-survivor of some sort. Her actions are frequently self-destructive, she has trust issues, and has a very low self esteem. Why people find it in themselves to hate such a character, I don't want to know.
@azmyers68515 жыл бұрын
Probably because Kvothe is the character we relate to the most, as he's the protagonist. We want to see him happy and successful, and its plain to see that, for whatever tragic reason, Denna is a source of pain for Kvothe.
@mariusdesu16334 жыл бұрын
maybe because most of people reading kingskiller chronicles are adults, so we see kvothes mistakes as well as dennas and can relate to them as we did similar mistakes as teenagers too, but the problem is that kvothe is main character, we can see his thoughts, but in denna's case we cannot, we can only see a foolish young girl who ensnares and leads or main character, we are invested in, astray, we unknowingly are taking it personal;y.

It really says a lot about Rothfuss' character that he didn't name names in this rambling story. The closest he came was repeating the name that the townspeople gave to a local eccentric that liked to cosplay as a mole. It'd be easy to accidentally say too much and then 1 or 2 crazy fans would take things too far and start stalking some random woman. A woman that he might not have seen in years and may not even remember that she once knew Rothfuss, or that her odd mannerisms have been morphed into a character from his books.

Patrick Rothfuss is the author of a series of books, The King killer Chronicles (1. The Name Of The Wind, 2. The Wise Man's Fear, and a spin off called The Slow Regard of Silent Things, depicting a day in the life of the character he mentions in this video, Auri) The third of of the series, Doors of Stone iirc, hasn't been released yet, and as you could probably tell from the immature levels of toxicity in the comments, people aren't happy about it because he isn't dedicating every moment of his waking life to finishing it. Dudes a perfectionist who spends a crazy amount of time ensuring his books are exactly how he wants them before publishing (averaging over 10 years of drafts iirc) and some people get salty because hes not going at their pace. Just to give info on the dude and why there's so much toxicity around him. Tl;dr - an author most known for two books and a novella (which qre genuinely quite good imo) with a very entitled and impatient fanbase.

So basically, yeah, Denna is based on someone, but like Tunnel Bob’s transition into fiction you wouldn’t be able to tell who this “Denna” was in real life if set side by side with her fictional counterpart (it isn’t lazy photoshopping). If he said too much more he might get himself into hot water with the real life Denna (or at the very least embarrass her and maybe even himself). He still managed to address the question as much as he could without giving up too much of his own private life to a room and world full of strangers (like us here in KZfaq land). I don’t think we should demand or expect to know all of his private life and how that translated into his books (Wanting it, and demanding/expecting it are two different things).

Denna is not evil as the question suggests. She's a woman who survived alot, the streets, the abuse, and she always walks a fine line (survival) between pride and whoring herself..as she is in a society as a whole clearly patriarcal, and she is economically dependent on men, who say they ''love'' her, but their fascination does not garanty her safety nor dignity, as they quickly think they own her because of that dependence. Her social statue makes any relationship with men start with her at an inferior or weaker position, so she has to mantain a position of control by staying aloof and unatainable and fascinating. Because they already think they own her, but if she becomes a conquest, they'll discard her. Her attitude is of self preservation. she shows her true self to the hero, mostly because socially they are equally poor, and so she does not feel too threatened..and also because, he accepts her dissapearing act and does not act like if he owned her..she also tests him by those dissapearances to see if he'll do like her other men. And at the same time, when she does not find him, she ''pouts''... It's the typical behavior of prideful, strong willed and yet insecure women.

@hallouminati34227 жыл бұрын
I agree with you completely, she is a great character with many different layers. We don't know much about her origin, her and Kvothe are both very secretive about their past, only we hear the story being told by Kvothe. It could very well be that a great tragedy befell her in her early years as well. What we do know, is that if times are this hard for a young intelligent, musically gifted, (apparently) good looking young fella such as Kvothe, they're gonna be atleast double as hard for Denna, who is all of the above and more, but as a woman a popular target for people who want to take advantage of her. Potential spoilers ahead: I am talking about her patron, who's into some troubling shit and treats her poorly. She resists giving away his identity But also the fact, that almost every time Kvothe recalls seeing her, he mentions her astonishingly white teeth, which to many are a dead give-away for a denner resin addiction. Perhaps she got hooked the first time, when she accidentally consumed it in the forest of Trebon and her nomadic lifestyle is a result of this. What I am absolutely sure of (to finally conclude this train of thought..) is that Denna has definitely seen some shit.

I think the way Denna just appears everywhere Kvothe goes is not natural. For a while I homestly thought she was sent by the Chandrian to keep an eye on Kvothe, but then I realised that it didn't make any sence. If they thought he was a threat to them, they would just kill him...
@darkdragon70996 жыл бұрын
I remember reading some theories that she was actually one of the Chandrian, not just sent by them.
@Mintlicious5 жыл бұрын
Wow! I never actually considered that theory. I personally thought Denna was following him when she could, making money where she could, meaning that her ability to follow Kvothe was consistently fragmented.

Doesn't add up. With her making a factually incorrect song about Lanre and all. Doesn't sound like something someone related to The Seven would do.

@Avenus1125 жыл бұрын
I think I get what he's trying to say. Even if it wasn't directly transferrable he still amalgamates interesting experiences into interesting characters. So even if he never had a Denna he would still make a Denna because she's an interesting, dramatic and identifiable component that fits the story.

The most interesting fact I learned from this video is that the KZfaq algorithm is scary. I read the Kingkiller Chronicles like three months ago and have searched some background info about the release of the third book afterwards and got some chuckles from memes about book three being in the works for ages. Also, I read a comprehensive chapter by chapter analysis and mentioned it in the series in a KZfaq comment. I haven't thought about or googled anything about the book afterwards as far as I remember. And suddenly, today, KZfaq recommends this video. I am a little confused and scared and Patrick, please finish book three before KZfaq is bought by Disney and the monopolise fun.

I found Denna annoying, she is always swinging between "please come and help me cause im scarred" and "Dont come close cause im scarred" and is tiring, specially because we saw Kvothe going through so much shit and then screwing up left and right but he actually does move past his problems... even if he causes new ones, *but he does something,* there are also other women who do stuff to solve their problems, there is Devi who manipulates people and leverages favors to get access to the magic she was denied because she is a woman (but she is a badass bitch so she may as well be lying to hide her actions), there was Kvothe's mom who ran away to leave her restrictive life behind, the aunt who may be misguided but also proactive on her goals of kicking gypsi's asses, or that rich girl who fell in love with Kvothe and made her moves on him but moved on when it was clear he was not interested There are plenty of other characters that are as fucked up as Denna but they do something to get out of it or keep trying, she us just too much of a damsel in distress and Kvothe goes after her cause he has hero syndrome Yeah, thats it, she is annoying because she is passive on her suffering but active on meddling with others, and also hinders the main character's development, she is the character that makes the story drag on

It is after all a heroic fantasy, that aside i do agtee but i would love to add that we dont know her exact position nor circumstances. Meaning she could still be caught up in a mental battle. Nor do w know what possibly is held against her, taken from her, etc etc. We can so far only speculate.
