Imagine tumbling away from your station, knowing that you will not be able to get back, that no one can save you and that you will ultimately float way to your death, on your own, maybe staring at your planet, the planet from which you came from.

The idea of floating away into the darkness of space, is a terrifying thought, a thought that would definitely cross every astronaut's mind while spacewalking. This kind of situation is normally seen depicted on the big screen, in movies like Gravity.
But what would happen if you really did float off into space?
Well Space agency's like NASA do have safety protocols to prevent float away astronaut situations from happening. When an astronaut steps outside of the international space station, for example, they are attached to the spacecraft at all times with a retractable 26-meter braided steel tether, which has a tensile strength of 1,100 pounds. But If this strong tether was to fail, the astronauts can then engage the "SAFER". (Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue).It is a small, emergency jet pack system, worn during a spacewalk and provides free-flying mobility to return to the space station. If however the "Safer" failed or the astronaut wearing it was unconscious and could not operate the jet pack, then the only hope would be that the other members of the space station could start a rescue mission. But this rescue effort would be tricky, as there is currently no spacecraft that could be used to retrieve the float away astronaut. So if the tether snapped, the jet pack malfunctioned and your astronaut space buddies failed to rescue you, then you would float off in the direction according to whatever forces were acting on you when you broke loose. You would be completely weightless, potentially spinning and no amount of kicking or doggy paddling would save you. The Earths gravity would trap you in an orbit around the planet and if your spacesuit was still sealed, you would have to experience this terrifying fate for up to 8 hours, as you wait for your oxygen supplies to run out.
However If your suit had become damaged during the incident that caused you to float away, your trip into space would be massively cut short. Exposure to outer space would cause you to become unconscious within 15 seconds, Your blood and other fluids would boil and then freeze because there is no air pressure. Your boiling fluids would cause your body would swell up, perhaps to twice the normal size and all this would happen within a few minutes.
However, If you floated away from your station at the right angle and velocity then you might even be set for a collision course with Earth, but you wouldn't make it anywhere near the surface because the Earth's atmosphere would cause you to burn up on entry, just like a falling meteor. Thankfully Nobody currently has ever had to experience this terrifying fate of being afloat away astronaut and even though there have been some close calls in the past, the astronaut's safety equipment has prevented a situation like this from happening. Agency's like NASA are confident that a float away astronaut will not happen and I for one, hope they are right.

Are you kidding? With the helmet on, you would eventually just lose consciousness. But consider the view of Earth you would get to enjoy. If I had a terminal illness, and it were possible to die in space, it wouldn't be a bad way to go. It's not the lack of oxygen that would get you. It's the buildup of CO^2 that would actually kill you.

I prepared myself for death when I joined the Navy, I was a Gunner's Mate, If it blew shit up, I was involved in it. My life expectancy was 2 minutes in a shooting war, I was a 50 Cal. gunner on a landing craft off of the USS Spiegel Grove LSD 32. My ship was involved in the Mercury programs atlas 7 return to earth. I am proud of who and what I have become, You shouldn't sit behind a computer and blindly and ignorantly judge someone. It makes you look, well, not so smart. Bravado? I wouldn't call it that. I just overcame my fear of death. that's all. Whatever you want to call it, it's sure not empty, it has substantial meaning to me. Ive dealt a lot with pseudo-intellectuals like yourself, All narcissistic ego and nothing to back it up, the one that's always left face down in the parking lot. Good day.

You would only experience that sensation for a matter of second because remember, the ISS is travel in in a low earth orbit at 17,500 mph. How about this for a idea. A rocket based net which has weights on its corners. When fired towards a float-away astronaut, it opens up, deploying its wide net, and as it hits the astronauts, the weights on the corners continue forwards until they become tough and meet back together. If magnets are attached to it, it can seal it self and then be reeled back to the space station.

@Ehmty

Ryan Power Yea that's what I was implying, Magnets wont work. You need gravity for magnets to work. Magnets are a pulling force used by gravity.
@10kanojias
@10kanojias 7 жыл бұрын
Electric and magnetic forces are very slightly stronger in a vacuum than in air. Air is slightly polarizable and can move to partially shield the forces. But the effect is so weak, you'd need high precision instruments to measure it. By creating a magnetic fields which affect circulating currents (other magnets). These require no material medium for their transmission. So yes, magnets do work in outer space, and im some cases, even better than on Earth. But how about this as another idea. Electromagnets. Power can be run by cables which lead back to the tether's point of origin and can power the magnets. Thus it can work in any part of space, not just around a quantity of mass that generates a magnetic field like Earth.

I remember an old 1950's EC Science Fiction comic in which an astronaut was trapped in space just above the Earth's orbit thinking about his wife and child who he would never get to see again and he started plunging to the Earth going through it's atmosphere screaming in terror and agony as his suit started heating up. At the same time on Earth a mother and her child were looking up at the star filled sky, "Look Darling! A shooting star! Make a wish!" :-D (Pause) "What did you wish for Dear?" :-) "I wished that Daddy would come home." :-)

He's always been my favorite artist. His music helped get me through the bad. He let everyone know it's okay to be different, even better sometimes. Miss him very much, the Starman

I would still sneak some snacks and water into my suit in case I float away and have 8 hours to live. At least I had some Cheetos, gummy bears, and chocolates before I die

floating around the earth in a spacesuit for eight hours doesn't sound like such a bad way to go, at least you'd have something beautiful to marvel at as you took your last breath

+SuperYtc1 not true, if you hold your breath, yes but if you were to breath from a ballon for example, you would fall asleep and not be to bad of a death.
