The future is an idea I’ve always had a fascination with from a very young age and with the popularity of Paul, Eren and Anakin at an all time high I thought it would be the perfect time to explore this topic. I hope you enjoy the video and thank you for watching!

Hey guys, thanks for watching the video I just want to point out two things 1. I realised after making this video that I completely mispronounced Frank Herbert’s name throughout the entire video and I’m really embarrassed about it😭 (I’ll start practicing names before recording from now on) 2. Like I said at the end of the video I’m new to making video essays so if you have any criticisms or things that I can improve please let me know. I’ll try my best to take it on board Once again thank you for watching and have a good day❤

You know something else I’ve thought about. Paul saw into the future to hear Jamis’ words, “life is not a problem to solve, but a reality to experience”. Well Paul has already experienced said realities through his foresight. So does that mean that Paul isn’t truly living then, just merely existing. Pretty sad when you think abt it

Finally another guy who understands Eren. Eren was a slave to freedom, but the freedom he wanted meaning he was a slave to his own expectations. I don’t see why that’s so hard to understand. Exactly, sometimes i loose hope, when i see people justifying Eren choices. All the dude had to do was following Armin's plan. Use the Titan powers to buy Eldia enough time to develop a strong military and catch up in technologically. Then try the diplomatic approach.
@niamhmaloney8750
@niamhmaloney8750 Ай бұрын
@@edouard9867 You assume it would have worked tho. There were three unknowns with the pacifist route. 1) Whether Eldia could ever catch up to an equal position with Marley and the outside. Just because they had rare resources didn't mean they had the ability to use it. 2) Whether Marley would wait. Which, they obviously were not doing even before Eren declared war. They NEEDED to declare war on Eldia and nothing would stop that. Willy and Magath both agreed on this 3) Whether people would even care. Becuz lets be real, they wouldn't. Paradise might have persuaded some of the captives (only like 10% btw) but how would they convince the whole world. Chances are Humanity would have just attacked them the moment the heard the "spawn of the Devil" was growing stronger Eren told Armin that the Rumbling was the only way forward and that his visions failed to show an alternative that didn't result in Eldia's destruction

@@lain5858I think you misunderstand Erans character, cause while he is complex, he is no hero. He has a sick obsession with freedom, which is partly what drives him towards the rumbling. You see, AOTs world is deterministic, which means that the future includes him seeing the future. There is no future where he does not see it. He does not kill the world because he has too, but because what he experiences, combined with his character, only has one result which is the rumbling. He can't make other choices, cause the world has already concluded what choices he makes in that circumstance. This is quite different from Paul, who only sees possible futures. Dune does not have a deterministic world. Therefore, Paul's ability to see the future, gives him the power to choose the future, and to get the golden road, he has to become something he cannot accept (but his son can). Both are very interesting, but completely different, and has different effects on the characters
@lain5858
@lain5858 Ай бұрын
@@arthurnielsen4066 Its not a "sick obssesion for freedom" He IS literally opressed for being Eldian and living caged just to die by a pure Titan sent by Marley. His people are literally put in concentration camps around the world and used as biological weapons. Eren though his problems was only Titans taking his freedom then he discovered the entire World wants to take his freedom way. So his search for freedom is 100% justified because he is opressed. Its like saying for a concentration camp victim "ho you want to leave this Camp? Such.... obssesion for freedom..." That's the problem with AOT. The story is simple...Very simple but fans want to make It more "deep" than actually is

Fantastic video man. I also drew the surface level parallels between Eren and Paul like most people did but I never quite realized how much they foiled each-other in how they engage with the future. Eren’s torment came from the fact that the horrific future he saw was a direct reflection of what he wanted deep down. Everything from protecting his friends, to recreating his childish expectation of the world being a blank canvas. On the flip side, Paul is left with a lack of any genuine agency over his own life because of the situations he’s thrust into and the roles he’s forced to play. Paul’s power robs him of his humanity while Eren’s power allows him to act on the worst parts of his.
@angeldoe1229
@angeldoe1229 Ай бұрын
Hope this doesn't get lost but wanted to share my perspective of Eren. The tragedy of eren is that while he could make his own choices, he couldn't go back and change what led him to ultimately make the choice to start the rumbling. The future is deterministically bc no matter what eren can't undo the cause and effect dynamics that forged him from a stubborn and angry child into a violent and selfish man. It was always going to happen because eren jaeger, the worst person possible to be given any kind of power was given all the power in the world. And despite his sense of morality and false heroism he couldn't become anything other than what he already grew to be, the devil of all earth. A man who only knew violence, who could only concieve of violence. He could fantasize about some future with Mikasa but it never would have happened because it was just an attempt to escape himself. Even if he did go with Mikasa to the countryside he would still be the man who *chose* to do the rumbling.
@mosesmm5473
@mosesmm5473 25 күн бұрын
Part of why I love AoT is the world while making it clear Eren is in the wrong, great an great job in explaining and showing us why Eren and his supporters could get into that mindset. As his first meeting with Mikasa happens after her parents were killed and they were both confronted with how evil exists even within the halls, then we see regularly fighting to protect Armin, though he rarely won without Mikasa there. His struggles through those first 3 seasons highlight to him that he's not special-yes, but that the only way to save anyone IS to fight, to destroy their enemies whether they be Titan or human, within the walls like the King that refused to defend his people, or beyond the waters towards a world that thanks to actions outside his and any other person on Paradis control, hates them. When he travels, he learns that his people were both being victimised and villianfied by Marley, whose actions keep the sins of the dead alive in the collective conscious, even when he was listening to Willy's speech, the man left out key details on WHY Paradis was now a threat. I'm of the mindset that if Willy had not done that, and rather then call for war, called for peace, Eren would have backed down. Heck, we know that part of him wanted peace as in alternative timelines, such as the one where Mikasa asnwers his question differently, he leaves and doesn't start the rumbling or a violent takeover of his own government. But that wasn't the main timeline, and because of that, he can ONLY see the bad in humanity, he can only see violence as the option because for the longest time, that was the only option as you can't reason with a Titan, they couldn't reason with the true royal, they couldn't reason with Marley either. But he forget that he could reason with the people, they they could forge new bonds and put down the swords. Like you said, he become a slave to this future-but it was a future that was created by the present him.

I actually haven't seen any of these franchises (I didn't watch the prequel trilogy when I was younger, so I'm catching up) and yet I still got every point. What I really liked about running into this video is that I'm planning out a story idea with a protagonist who's a prophet and didn't know much about heros who see the future. Really put things into perspective for me and now I have a clearer picture of it. The nuance and thematic potential for these kinds of stories is pretty cool, so it should be fun to flesh mine out! Would like to add Handsome Jack to this discussion of characters seeing the future. Handsome Jack’s downfall didn’t necessarily start when he saw the future, (his downfall was already happening throughout the story of Pre-Sequel with everyone betraying him) but it was seeing into the future and seeing his death which completely put events into motion. Jack is a tragic character and although in the end he becomes unhinged his intentions were good, he wanted the betterment of Pandora by ridding it of the bandits that plagued the planet, it’s just that to stop his death and make sure his plan would succeed he’d need to kill the Vault Hunters by any means necessary. Innocent lives end up getting brought into it but in Jack’s eyes the end justifies the means, because he truly sees himself as the “hero”, and everyone else as the villain. And he’s actually right, in the Borderlands series no one is truly good, Vault Hunters are glorified grave robbers and are murders themselves (and even cannibals *cough* Salvador *cough* ), Jack was the only one who truly wanted Pandora to be better. In the words of Handsome Jack himself “he’s the goddamn hero”.

So unlike Anakin who was told a prophecy, Yeagar who foresaw his path & accepted it, Atreides who chose best path(like Detroit become Human), Kvoth had no choice. Creature already knew what he would accept so he tailored his conversation aptly & there was no escape whatsoever.

God Emperor would have to be dramatically changed to make it adaptable, and even then it probably wouldn't even be worth it. God Emperor, in theory, is one of the most interesting Dune books. In practice, though, it's downright oppressive to read. It isn't as bad as Heretics, but I had to take several humongous breaks when reading it.

Always liked the idea of fictional characters seeing into the future and like all fiction and mythology it based on real world truth. If you ever find yourself sitting and thinking about these characters and how cool it would be to be able to see the future just remember that you can! Sort of… with the right amount of planning and determination almost anything can be brought to existence. Just remember all these cool characters are based off of you not the other way around. You may feel inspired by some of them and their stories but they were inspired off of you or us actually. Create the vision and focus on the now. Now is eternal for as we can perceive anything outside of it. With lots of practice keep making yourself aware and present of the now and align it with your vision. You don’t need to be confident that you’ll succeed in the future you just have to do your best now to make it happen

I wasn’t going to make a comment but thinking about it this actually reminds me of the project I’m working on My character doesn’t “see” the future or know it’s definite outcomes, per say, but does use examples of the past as his key to doing so He’s a character that, looking at his current state of society and then comparing it to the past, see it will be doomed to collapse again and likely cause the death of many in the near future, both physically and metaphysically, and because of this he w a sort of messiah-complex where he doesn’t care what happens to him or anything like that not trying to be egotistical but is trying so hard to fix as much as he can through himself alone; while he tries to look good it isn’t because of peer pressure or wanting to fit in but rather to gain the respect of the people and then use that respect as a “stadium” to express and change society towards a better life. The thing is that he fails to see, while his intentions are just and good, the thing he fails to do is to actually care for himself other than to look respectable; he’s a bitter, self loathing perfectionist that has no love for himself, which in turn may cause him to implode or collapse into himself and potentially bring others with him In a sense, he’s a character that uses the past to “see” the future but also sees an urgency in doing so while also having an unhealthy obsession against himself, which in turn affects him in seemingly slight ways that may add up

Dune is the epitome of how to not follow a tired trope. Paul is not a white savior and even a savior in general. He lead the Fremen because he did it for himself in a sense.

Isayama said it himself Eren is the worst part of ourselves The world is cruel but beautiful Eren only sees half of it That’s the whole fucking reason why he didn’t see the sea shell and enjoyed the sight seeing but only focused on killing his enemies People thought this is cool thing but it’s not LOL It’s not your normal anime stuff where mc will do these type of things for no reason other than the reason he is the mc and armin isn’t

If eren didn't do genocide his people get genocide, Eren is begging to hange about other plans than rumbling, there no option for eren, You can say that eren decision is wrong but he isn't evil. In the end of aot eren said there no other option than rumbling. And when eren in Marley he is talking about hope in future, show sempethy towards his enemy than suddenly he wanted to distroy the world, that is illogical for his character, what I think is writer didn't show true ending of series.

@@jacobmills-nu3jv eren has two sides Humanity and dark side Obviously he apologised to ramzi that’s his humanity side battling Obviously if eren didn’t genocide then world does but that’s besides the point That’s the whole reason why armin also shared responsibility of him lol Armin didn’t just told ‘Eren you are evil and we will have no sympathy for you ‘

@@jacobmills-nu3jvthe problem isn’t if eren hadn’t genocide the world would have genocide on them The thing is WHY eren did genocide In the end he literally said I WANTED TO SEE THE SIGHT And he couldn’t tell why because before he told that line we are shown Grisha telling baby eren that he is free Concluding the fact that it was in his nature to be free and nobody forced him into it

@@AM17titan it means eren was lying all this time, when he said that he was doing rumbling for people of paradoy, he also said to Armin that there is no other option than the rumbling. Eren didn't give the proper reason for rumbling, maybe eren was a slave to his fate.

@@jacobmills-nu3jv NO he didn’t said there is no option other than the rumbling ….he is lying at that time when he said he tried different possibilities because you can see eren isn’t even talking eye to eye to armin And then right after that armin told that he it’s not possible and then in the end you can see eren realising that he did it for himself As he said ‘I wanted to to see the sight ‘ and then he said he don’t know why he wanted to do it because before this line we are shown Grisha telling to baby eren that he is free basically concluding the fact that being free was in his nature nobody forced that thing onto him

In watching this video, the LAST thing on my mind was a lack of script quality. I think you did a fantastic job in conveying your ideas and points, expecially considering my lack of familiarity with both Dune and AoT. I can't begin to describe how pleasantly surprised I am to have found such a fascinating topic discussed so engagingly from a random video on my recommended page. Well done across the board, and here's hoping your essays for college are as good as this one.

Its not your seeing the future that dooms you, its your will being excircised against what you see that defines you. I.e. the more you fear to lose control the less youll ultimately have, and worse, become what you fear. Its only through accepting that things will come as they do, and letting go of all fear that ine can really be free. Enjoy the moment, and strive to be a good man without letting wilfulness get in the way.
