Think of it more of like looking through a cloud llit by the city lights vs being in a light polluted area or not. Example, I live near the beach in a heavily populated area. Now when I look at the sky over the city I can't see anything except the brightest stars. But If I look out to the beach over the ocean where there are no lights I can see everything. Now If I move far from the beach to the otherside of the city and try to see the stars over the beach looking through the sky over the city then it will be hard to spot anything. So, if you're on the mountains where there isn't light pollution then your target also should be over an area without light pollution. So, for you straight up is the best area as there is nothing to prevent you from seeing

Back in 1999, I was on the USS Boxer LHD4; somewhere between Hawaii and Iwo Jima. We had night flight ops going, so the only lights outside the ship were IR, and it was a new moon. There was ZERO light polution! It was so dark, you couldn't see your own hand in front of your face. It was hard to point out a spot WITHOUT a star. I pray i get to see the night sky like that again some day.

I grew up near Chicago, Illinois so of course with the light pollution you wouldn’t be able to see many stars in the sky. But as my in laws and I made our way to Oklahoma one time and passed rural towns at 2am, I got to see just how many stars there were and saw that Geminid meteor shower! It was so incredibly fascinating! and now I live in Kansas bc of the military and the night time is so beautiful. I see what looks like millions of stars so easily scattered across the sky and I would feel so small, and the emotion I feel while looking up I can’t describe it! Outer space is so so beautiful to me!

Northern Hemisphere, you can very easily recognize Perseus, Taurus and Andromeda which are all northern constellations. As for time it depends. Judging from the position of the Pleiades and Ahlpa Persei clusters, this is looking eastward and the constellations shown are rising. If this takes place just after sunset, then its in October. If its just before dawn, then its June/July, so the range would be roughly June to October

When I was in the army doing training to be a truck driver. One of the classes was at night to train on what's called blackout driving. No lights and all you have on is night vision goggle. I remember when I put it on and looked up at the night sky the whole sky was covered in glitter! It was the most amazing sight and I realized how little of the stars we see in the night sky. It was truly breathtaking

You seeing Andromeda there makes me seem a bit nervous about how it’s coming toward us and all that.

I from NYC, born and raised in Greenwich village and the only time I got to see all the stars was at the Hayden planetarium when I was a kid. Joined the Marine Corps in 1987 and in 1989, was stationed at 29 Palms California. First time I got to stand in the Mojave and see the night sky was breath taking. Not to take anything away from the good people and the technology of the Hayden planetarium but there’s just no way to capture the realty. Great video , great memory ! Thanks for it ! 🤙🏻👊🏻

I remember seeing the seven sisters, both ursas, and so many more constellations clearly from the middle of the city in the 80s and early 90s. Now I can barely see the north star at night
