I think this scene is a triumph of writing, performance, directing and it all coming together. The dialogue is brilliant, with the killer line at the end and for a sitcom, they aren't afraid of using awkward pauses and stretches with no humour to deliver the story. Nick Lyndhurst gives a brilliant performance that screams the characters feelings to the audience without having to say them, required to make the scene work and is the reason all the jokes are funny even though he isn't delivering any of them. And when the line drops that moment where Del hits Grandad with the newspaper gives the audience a sense of being "in on it"

The best thing about this episode - though I don't know whether John Sullivan intended it or not, was that Del arguably proved he was _better off without_ Rodney! Indeed, Del seems to soar without his "dopey kid bruvver" whilst their 'partnership' is temporarily dissolved. Well, at least until he gets Young Towser to buy the consignment of broken lawnmower engines back that is (though that's technically Rodney's fault as well!). Still, their contrasting experiences are ironic considering Del had previously accused Rodders of "holding me back" in an earlier episode...
