What is Acorns?
The basic premise is that they’re an app that helps automate your investing. And their most notable feature, in my opinion, would be their “round up” feature - this lets you invest the spare change from what you spend, and you can just “round up” every single purchase to the nearest dollar to invest the difference.
They also give you the option to setup recurring investments on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis… again, the entire purpose of this app is just to help automate regular and consistent investing. They’ll also let you see, real time, what your investments COULD be worth depending on your contributions…so it’s really meant to get you thinking about the long term.
Now in terms of WHAT they invest in, they say “Your investments are then diversified across more than 7,000 stocks and bonds and automatically rebalanced when the market fluctuates.” So basically, they’re investing in broad funds that track the market, very similar to the vanguard index funds I always talk about on the channel.
And when it comes to this, Acorns is what’s called a Robo-Advisor - this has definitely gained some popularity lately with other companies like Wealthfront, Bettermint, and M1 Finance to name a few.
If we go to their pricing tier, we can see that their basic service begins at $1 per month:
With that, you get the Automated investing where they round up the charge and invest the difference
Then, for $2 per month, you get access to all of that, plus Acorns Later - which is their IRA.
And finally…for $3 per month, you’ll get access to their checking account with debit card.
So overall, looking through everything on Acorns and spending way too much time on this…here are my thoughts and what I REALLY think of it:
Acorns simplifies investing and making it incredibly easy, to the point where you don’t need to think about it. The concept of rounding up is clever, it’s gimmicky, and I can see how it works. If Americans aren’t going to think about investment, they can just invest on Autopilot without making any difference whatsoever except for setting up an Acorns account. So from that perspective, I really like it.
HOWEVER…what I consider a negative for Acorns, is that if you just want to straight up invest a small amount of money into an index fund…and what to do it for TOTALLY FREE, you can do that with Fidelity.
If you’re investing with more money, Acorns slowly becomes more and more worth it as the $1 fee becomes a smaller percentage of the total amount you have invested.
BUT…I’ll admit, using Acorns is WAY better than doing nothing. For people who just can’t seem to save and invest any money, or don’t really take an interest to investing…this is BY FAR better than the alternative of just not investing.
Just my opinion, not financial advice.

That is where I'm at. I have been thinking about signing up for the Acorn service. I have tens of thousands that has been just sitting in the credit union, but I don't have time to actively manage any investments. I could easily throw the $3 grand to reach the break-even point for the $1 a month service then let the machine work, or, feel the pinch, the $6 grand for the $2 service to use the IRA function. I'm at a strange financial point indeed. Do I pay off my mortgage? I'm getting sick of it. What I paid to the bank so far now matches what the property is valued at. Do I invest and attempt to get a return higher than my mortgage interest?

How do you get acorns to give you the rewards on gas and grocery purchases? Mine doesn’t do it automatically and I’m trying to figure out why. Do I have to select the icon for the gas company in acorns and search for the location, purchase at that exact location, keep the app open during the purchase, and then I can get the cash back? Idk. I’m using the linked card it’s not recognizing any of my purchases that are eligible for “found money”.

Yeah, you can look at it that way. Or maybe it's just an elaborate marketing scheme because being a successful content creator requires a certain level of relatability. 🤔. But yes, even if the latter is true, it's probably much more beneficial to take financial advice from a person who is wealthy 🤑

There's an option of a premium subscription you didn't cover. It comes with a complimentary 10K life insurance policy. The cost is $9+ a month. Lots of banks offer "complimentary" life insurance coverage. I'd like to hear more about that - life insurance , basic, easy, no tricks. Most of us aren't prepared for death, as we're aren't even prepared for life well enough.

When I started with Acorns three years ago with a $100 deposit, reoccurring $5 weekly, and round-ups. Since then I have increased my contributions and doing great. It was a step in a good directly at the time when I didn't have much savings. Now I could happily say I wouldn't have gotten this far without it. A lot of people will frown at the $1 a month, but if that is all you're spending to get your foot in the door of investment then you should do it. Most of us spend far more on far less important things.

I was the first marketer at acorns when they had 0 customers. Worked there for almost 4 years. No longer part of the company so this is my personal input but I do want to address a few things: 1. Acorns was designed for folks who weren't investing until much later in life. As you all know, time is the best asset when it comes to investing. 2. The average gains in the market is about 7%/yr over 30 years. Hence, Acorns is "break even" at a $200 balance ($14/yr vs $12/yr cost). 3. Just the idea of putting money in every day / every week helps with dollar cost averaging Other than that Stephan great video! Thumbs up to other folks can see.

It is sometimes a bit confusing with how the app tells you how much money you have put in. I have also read somewhere that low money in the account makes the account fees quite high, but if there is 5k in there, its quite efficient. Sorry, i cant remember where i got the information from. Im sure this is going to get lost in the comments but Im a bit confused on why you were so worked up on the $1 fee ($12/yr). For me personally, it's not about the money it cost for the service, it's about just the service of roundups because it's essentially passive saving. 1.2% fee on $1000 is still $988 I would never have saved actively. That interest is negligible to me because the money as a whole is a bonus, I and I'm sure most people that use this are not factoring it into their expenses/ budget and I think that's the whole point. (at least for me)

I've been using Acorns for over a year now and I love it. I have all my CC and Debit cards linked and round up to the nearest dollar, plus I've aded a multiplier and weekly investment into the account. What I love most about it, is you set it up and forget about it. If you don't see the money you won't miss it, you will be surprised on how much your portfolio will grow just off of rounds, it can also show how much you are spending as well, especially if your portfolio has an aggressive growth do to agressive spending. I do also like the family investment option now where you can now start putting money into your dependents own portfolio for their future.

I use the aggressive approach. Their rates now start $3/mo but I'm "grandfathered" in at a $1/mo until o decide to upgrade from the basic feature which I likely won't do until I have kids so ce now they have a family feature and I would want to start my kids saving early.

My real world experience with acorns is this. I have the basic 1 dollar per month account, set to the middle of the road investment profile. I turned off roundups after a short while, have had a consistent monthly transfer and put a bit extra when i feel i can afford it. To date i have invested 866.08, and my current account value is 937.8, 2 dollars of which is found money. So they have made me 71.72 greater than the monthly fee. That seems worthwhile even at a lower balance.

As a counterpoint. While you may lose a percentage in your first year or two. If you were with Acorn for 5 years and put away that $50/mo, then you would be near break even. Plus actually have savings which many people don't. Also, if you could put a lump sum away at the outset, that would help. Flat fees actually become quite desirable if your investments grow large.
