What You Need to Know About Proper Tongue Posture #shorts
You may not know this, but the place your tongue lives in your mouth is REALLY important.
It may sound weird, but tongue position has a HUGE influence on how you breathe, how you sleep and how you swallow.
If your tongue is in the wrong place, you’ll often end up breathing through your mouth. This is seriously non-optimal - it leads to a flabby airway & stuffed up nose, which contributes to poor sleep from snoring and sleep apnea.
Plus when your sleep sucks, your body & brain seriously miss out.
Meanwhile poor tongue position means poor swallowing which means your facial bones don’t get the loads they need to grow properly (or to maintain their shape because you, my friend, are constantly remodelling all your tissues & it’s physical inputs like chewing & swallowing that tell your body how to shape your face bones).
Digestion, spinal hyperkyphosis, TMJD, neck pain & tooth crowding are also affected by this!
This is personal experience for me - I had a tongue tie that really messed up my breathing, sleep & body and I’m still working through the fall-out.
The amazing The Breathe Institute released my tie 4 years ago & things got a lot better for me.
But recently I’ve noticed that my tongue has started thrusting forward again (after several years of good tongue posture).
NOT awesome - so I’m going to see an airway focused orthodontist today! Which inspired this post!
So check yourself:
✅ Your tongue should gently rest on the roof of your mouth with the tip 1-2 cm back from your teeth - where it goes when you say the ’n’ sound in ‘Boston’.
✅ Your lips should be closed & your teeth slightly apart.
If this isn’t your usual tongue position, & especially if you struggle with sleep, TMDJ, or nasal breathing, then consider getting some advice from an airway focused practitioner!

Thanks for your video! You said "get it checked out" - if you have a naturally low resting tongue posture, is this cause to see a doctor?

I’d suggest finding an oral myofunctional therapist (try the AOMT website) and yes, I would get it assessed.
