The secret police of Russia’s Soviet era was the infamous KGB. With the collapse of the USSR, Russia’s intelligence landscape also changed. Today, there is the FSB, the SVR and the GRU, and they each play different roles.

Simply put GRU is military intelligence and special operations forces. sVR is foreign intel (like the CIA). And FSB is similar to the FBI.

They kinda got it wrong the fsb usually if never operates out side of federation territory, they're the successors to the second chief directorate of the KGB aka internal security and the secret police. The svr is the successor to the first chief directorate of the KGB foriegn intelligence/ino. The rest of it's powers I think either went to the MVD like border guards etc.
@valeryval6840
@valeryval6840 4 жыл бұрын
No, border guards are still an FSB wing. They were briefly its own agency after the fall of USSR, but were reattached to FSB in 2003. That's why the number of FSB employees is so inflated in this video, the bulk of them is in border guards, and considering the length of Russian borders there are a lot of them. The FSB main body is around 30-60k according to different sources. But calling all of them a secret police is quite a stretch, they have a lot of facets. To be fair the division of responsibilities between agencies in Russia is pretty unclear, FSB is kinda like FBI, but with less police stuff and more CIA overtones.

@de Alcântara SVR is foreign political and technical intelligence, it's the remants of the old KGB first chief directorate which handled the above stated areas, where as the GRU now the GU is military intelligence and is subordinate to the general staff of the ministry of defense

GRU can't compare to anything America has. Except for maybe a more militarized version of the CIA. They are responsible for both cyber attacks, espionage, and large-scale covert military operations both domestically and internationally. I don't believe America has anything that covers so much at once.
@G4x5da
@G4x5da 3 жыл бұрын
@@Thor.Jorgensen the militarized version of the CIA is the DIA. And both (and more) have way more capabilities than GRU. GRU is a very amateurishly organization judging by recent operators getting caught everywhere due to beginner spycraft mistake ls

@@seyahznarf sort of the mvd has control over the civilian law enforcement, anti corruption agencies to an extent, fire departments and some customs and border control, anything that doesn't essentially affect state security because if it does it goes to the FSB as they are the state security organ.

@ljones121

@@seyahznarf kind of are, they used to also control the non-political prisons in the soviet union, the KGB controlled the political prisons. Now there's an independent agency that runs most of the prisons. But yes the mvd is the over arching administration for alot of things it used to be the nkvd, and controlled the secret police as well.

God is a little strong. He's just a money man with intelligence training, in a world leader position, who happens to control a vast feifdom. He deliberately manipulates his image to project power and command respect, using disinformation, delay in communication (translation from English to Russian for time to consider how to respond), and machismo in order to appear superior to his peers. Edit: over reactive auto correct :)

The crimea is historically and mostly ethically Russian territory, though i suppose that the Crimean Tartars have a good argument that the territory is technically theirs, as they lived there till the 1940s when they were deported to the far east by the NKVD under orders of Stalin and Beria. But I digress, Kruschev did gift the Crimea to the Ukraine but at the time it wasn't a big deal, United country and all, no one foresaw the breakup of the soviet state so...that collapse creates the current situations and conditions we see now

@Yoshimitsu Keke Gorbachev thought he could reform the unreformable, the Soviet system as created by Lenin and perfected by Stalin was not able to be changed ever, Nikita did some surface changes mildly curbed the MGB/KGB and the MVD's powers but not really and he moved Crimea, well because Krushev never foresaw the collapse of the USSR. I'm not against Crimea joining Russia, as long as they willingly voted to join the Russian Federation and the election results weren't tampered with or intimidated in to voting pro Russia.
