When I realized what medicine was all about, after graduating from med school I decided to try postgraduate for research opportunities. I feel clinical research is less stressful, because I realized that one thing is being good in studying medicine and another thing is actually being able to take the responsibilities of being a Doctor. Clinical research is a good way to interact with patients and still have work life balance. So if you ever got tired of practicing medicine, you can try research, you might like it.

I’ll have that at the back of my mind. Thank you. I’m not really aware of the non clinical part of medicine but I’ll do more research on this and the opportunities available

Very informative video. Thank you! I am not a doctor, but I was accepted to medical school many years ago. At first, I then agreed to go to medical school, I think with similar motivations to your own.. However, I was also accepted to graduate schools to study biochemistry and pharmacology. Finally, I decided to become a research scientist instead of a doctor. For several years while working as a research scientist, I was a Red Cross volunteer who visited patients at lunchtime once a week to (hopefully) help them to eat despite being sick, and to brighten their stay in a cancer ward by listening to to them. It was all good. However, I was always paid for my research work. I could not have lived if I had not been paid. For you, Doctor Martina, I want you to be paid for your work, and I want you to be safe at work.

Wow this is an interesting career background. Hopefully one day I’ll be paid for my work. It is part of the downsides of living in Nigeria but I believe better days are ahead for me. Thank you much ❤️

I’m looking to study anesthesiology in Nigeria and later go to the abroad for my masters. If I do so can I find work in countries like Canada and USA and will I be paid the average salary they give others in the USA or Canada

You cannot just study anesthesiology. Anesthesiology is a specialty program. So you must first study medicine get your medical degree and depending on the country want to go to there are different pathways before you can become an anesthesiologist. In Nigeria you’ll have to do one year compulsory internship (house job) after medical school then 1 year NYSC then you write an exam to get into anesthesiology training. Which is for 4 years. For the US, after medical school, you write all the US medical licensing exams, and fulfil some other criterias before they accept you into the anesthesiology training program which is also for 4 years. If you are already an anesthesiologist and you want to work as that in the US or Canada you still have to write their licensing exams and start the training all over again.
