I'd add the judge from Who framed roger rabbit. Not only that it was completely unexpected as there were no other toons posing as human, he was so horrifying in contrast of the cheerful animation tone of the other characters that it was truly an horrific moment

Technically he's not unmasked since he continues to wear the Judge Doom mask until he's dissolved with just a couple of toon characteristics popping through the mask to give it a jarring effect.

Never thought of it as a rip off but Scary Movie did it better. You know all along in The Usual suspects that there had to be more than met eye to the character who is the entire focal point of the movie. In Scary Movie Doofy was always in the background allowing us to fixate on the other characters, this made his transformation something we never thought about til it happened.

There are so many things the movie did well, satirize its genre while being creative and new at the same time. The sequels, we will ignore them because there really is no way Scream could do the same magic again. The beginning with killing a huge star, it really is a great movie. No honest person could say they saw that reveal coming. Everyone expected one person. Yet it gave us two, while at the same time still being a satire of the genre!

I agree about Spiderman II, it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thumb for this vid...also, I would give an honorable mention to Neve Campbell in "Wild Things", more of a twist ending than an actual unmasking, but through the course of the movie she's just seen as eye candy, then revealed in the end, as an evil mastermind who planned the whole thing.

When I was a teenager, I went to a horror Marathon at a local theater. It was an almost empty show. A little old woman asked to sit near me because she wanted to talk during previews and intermissions. She told me a story about The Phantom of the Opera. She was old enough that she went to the local premiere of the movie. She said the reaction to the unmasking scene was as wild as you could get. There were screams, faintings, people throwing up, and people running out of the movie. Two people sound up leaving in ambulances. It startled her but she was. expecting it, and enjoyed it. My mind of person.

Honestly, as a non-comicbook reader, the one that shocked me the most, was in Iron Man 1, when Tony Stark said "I am the Iron Man". After having watched so many comic book movies where keeping the heroes secret was the most important thing, that sentence was truly was not expected and was what got me super excited for what was to come for the MCU.

Keeping that in mind, although it wasn't an "unmasking", the revelation of the true villain in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" was a bigger shock than the revelation of Bucky as TWS----especially when you consider the actor who played the villain normally DOESN'T portray bad guys.

there can't possibly be 20 years between New Hope and ROTJ, that doesn't make much sense. Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder. His character unmasks and with each detail he removes from his make-up, he channels and exorcises all of his past characters. A great and hilarious moment in the film and a tremendous comedic performance. The acting in that scene in particular was a master showman's trick. He really deserved an Oscar for that moment alone, so naturally, he didn't win. It's fine though, the Academy Awards lost all credibility when Dances With Wolves beat GoodFellas for Best Picture and Best Director.

Cape Fear has a lot of shots that ended up becoming key to other, later “slasher” movies. Literally, Cape Fear (1962) has cinematography that is iconic and ahead of its time (rotating camera tracking shots for example). I just watched Cape Fear (1962) for the first time the other day... it is INCREDIBLE and has had massive influence on later films

Peeping Tom and Psycho both 1960. Not sure which came out first. I would say they both definitely had influence on the genre in some ways. But I think the "start of the slasher genre" would have to be A Bay of Blood (aka Twitch of the Death Nerve) 1972. It has all the main ingredients.

Anyone who has picked up a comic book in their life knows that Bucky is the Winter Soldier. The way the internet works that means everyone knew Bucky was the Winter Soldier years before the movie came out.

People where talking about him being Winter Soldier almost as soon as Cap's first movie ended. Basically the comic book fans did the whole "he's not really dead" back then. As I said stuff like that spreads like wildfire online.

A movie from my childhood, late '80s if I remember correctly... perhaps along the lines of the 'How To Host a Murder Mystery' game... shocked me when a character was unmasked -- twice. That is, was shown to be wearing two masks. That one shocked me, but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of the movie. If anyone out there knows it then I shall be thankful if you told me. Thank-you!
