I ran into Bryz at a youth hockey tournament, I was refereeing a game and his son was the goaltender on one of the teams I had. Saw him after the game, he’s a really nice personable guy, was able to get a picture with him.

The league desperately needs more characters like Bryz. So funny.l, honest and just an all around great guy who is obsessed with hockey.

I still see him time to time at my rink I used to work at, helped shoot on his son Vladdy and helped with his skates a few times, super nice people really fun to talk to as well. Bryz taught me how to screen the net and place shots that are more awkward for the tendy as well, if you didnt know who he was he wouldnt strike you as a formerly super talented NHL goalie. Very humble and nice people both vladdy and ilya, vladdy is looking to carry on like his old man he carries his team to wins and gave me trouble scoring even when he was 13-14 hes saving 80-85 mph shots and one timers

Bryzgalov regularly attends Flyers home games as well.

Bryz waiting for his ice time at my rink to do lessons or something and i saw him watching the last half of my game. I made a nice glove save and pointed at him then he waved back and I think that’s a cool thing to share.

I miss Mr. Universe. Bryzgalov's play in Philly (and pretty much every goaltender for years) was mostly a result of that team's inability to develop any kind defense corps after Pronger retired. They're just now getting the best out of their young prospects.

One thing of note. 2009-10 was the season where Tippett started coaching Phoenix. He brought in a very good defensive system that helped the goaltenders a lot.

this was well done....im glad this wasnt a negative video on him as he is still one of my favorite players ever......the flyers traded away all their best defensive forwards and brought in alot of young very green kids still adjusting to the NHL game and lost pronger in november of that first year......along with a run n gun style coach this team would've been a bad fit for any goalie to be thrown into let alone one with the pressure of that contract.....flyers basically ruined him and their team that summer and wer'e still paying for it 10 yrs later........bryzgalov should've never signed here but somehow i feel he got the last laugh as he'll be paid til 2027.

I loved Ilya Bryzgalov ..... he had a bad time in Philly... fans were all over him like we always are .... I miss the guy I really do. It's a damn shame ... I had such high hopes for him.

Whatever happened to Michael Leighton?

I actually remember attending a Ducks playoff game back in 2007. It was game 2 of their second round series against Vancouver at the Honda Center. The Canucks won that game in double overtime, but of course Anaheim would eventually win that series, and the Cup. One player that would be interesting to look into is Marian Hossa. He had quite the career. Even though he was drafted in 1997, and would play a few games with the Ottawa Senators almost immediately after being selected, the Slovakian forward somehow ended up in the junior Western Hockey League. I guess that move was worth it for him, as his team, Portland Winterhawks, would win the 1998 Memorial Cup as Canadian major junior champions.

I'm loving this "Whatever Happened To" series. I just want to take a second to throw out the name Christian Dube as a potential candidate for a future episode. His short career and lack of popularity might render the subject a no-go, but here goes: Back in the 90's, Dube was lighting it up in the Quebec Major Junior hockey league. The guy was an unstoppable force and was truly a pleasure to watch. Think Gretzky. Think Mario. You get the point. Anyway, one year Dube lead his team to the Memorial Cup and was immediately called up to the New York Rangers to help in the chase for the Cup. No training camp; no time in the minors to get up to speed, etc. None of that shit. He went straight to the show, yo. He was immediately placed on the roster of an NHL playoff hockey team. Here's where the story becomes even more interesting. I grew up playing hockey at a high level and am confident when pointing out good players. Dube was one hell of a good player. He was so good that he actually stood out during the NHL playoff year. And by that I mean he had the ability to control a play every time he was on the ice. Seriously, the guy was that good. Then, BOOM! Guy disappears and is never heard from since. The hell is up with that? One can only assume he's in a witness protection plan or something. Otherwise his disappearance makes no sense whatsoever.

Saw an interview with him from last December and he coaches his sons team, does some hockey camps now and goes back to Russia once in a while. He's also fascinated with astronomy apparently.

I thought the Flyers should have brought him back in recent years until Carter Hart showed up. I mean a several years retired Bryzgalov couldn't have been much worse than their goal tending in between 2015 and 2018.

He started that season and wanted starter money. GM Burke thought he was making too much money as a backup goalie and got put on waivers. Perfect example of how the grass is never greener on the other side since he didn't have goaltending Consulting Francois Allaire to help improve his game anymore.

Ahhhhhhh good old Risky Bryzness. I'll never forget his absurd comments and then watching him go out and be part of the Flyers team that worked the Penguins over in the first round in 2011. Lol that was one of the weirdest first rounds ever and it fit Bryzgalov flawlessly. Marc-Andre Fleury was getting shot full of holes and Bryzgalov occasionally did too. So many goals scored and such garbage defense lol.
