Holy shit I just got to the Japanese Civ portion and my anthro theory professor in undergrad literally critiqued and joked on Ruth Benedict for never meeting any of the people she wrote on. When Whatifalthist said the south was nearly uninhabitable to white people he was referring to malaria resistance conferred the sickle cell gene. From what I've always heard having a single sickle cell gene, from just one parent, makes you resistant malaria. I'm not sure why but I'm sure there's a totally rational explanation. Having 2 genes, from both parents, gives you sickle cell anemia - I don't know what that actually entails.
