Another awesome update - thank you for the global overview. As residents of Woodland WA we see ships at anchor during low tide & in transit during high as we cruise by on Interstate 5. The 100+yo drawbridge on the 5 needs to be replaced, I suspect you’re already following that. WA is doing several bridge repairs on the 5 this summer, huge impact to drivers.

And THAT's why they say "a picture says a thousand words." Those images really capture the enormity of the size and scope of the damage, and the enormous challenges the salvage team were presented with. It's a shame the work hasn't been highlighted more(really at all) by the mainstream media, because there are a bunch of people who have done exceptional work. Lets hope the team tasked with building the new bridge works in similar fashion.

That's because the men and women who do the productive work of the nation are too busy working to toot their own horn. Only the politicians and their useful idiots have the time to use media to brag about how they think things should be done while the productive members of society have already got the task half done. I have yet to see a career politician on either side do anything more than run for re-election, glad hand and take credit for the accomplishments of others.

Another issue with the Portland container terminal. About 3 or 4 years ago there was a port workers strike which backfired. The container terminal was closed during the strike and most shippers in the area discovered it was relatively easy and cost effective to truck their containers to Seattle during the strike. Once the strike ended, the business never came back.

As a Maryland citizen, I like Governor Wes Moore. I also liked Larry Hogan. I am (and have always been() a big fan of Tugboats. They are the hardest working boats in the harbor. No B.S. just power and reliability, getting the job done, day in, day out with little to no recognition. Mostly taken for granted, but I get it and I DO appreciate them.

About 1956 I was in the Second Grade in San Diego, CA USA. One of our projects was to study our ("world famous") harbor and maritime in general. Our hands-on project was to build a wooden boat, about 8" long by 4" wide. Mine was a tug boat, painted blue with white shoe laces forming the railings.

It's not just that the LCS''s suck, USN keeps trying to start construction on its FREMM Frigates to replace them, but couldn't even settle on a finalized blueprint for what they even want the Constellation class frigates to do, so they changed nearly every part of the original FREMM design to the point that its basically a new ship, causing it to go over schedule and budget. The whole point of buying FREMM is it's COTS, so they can get it cheaply & quickly after wasting so much time and money on trying to resuscitate LCS, but they defeated that point. They always try to blame shipyard workforce recruitment & retention, but that's just a polite way of saying "more money please;" the issue is mismanaging the resources they were already given, which isn't fixed by throwing more money at the problem, its fixed by accountability.
@SVSky

Peeling the onion back more. Selecting an existing design was never going to reduce changes if U.S. gear was to be included and U.S. key performance indicators met. Here is the would never be he same short list: - Radar(s) - Gun - VLS number, length and weight - ASM -Decoys -ECM/ESM -CWIS/Point Defense That would create a different hotel load, likely upping the generator power needed. Surprise surprise we picked the gensets in German F-125 and UK Type 26 / Aussie Hunter / Canadian whatever they call it.

The big trap is that CCP subsidizes almost 100% of the cost and is used as a weapon... so they don't care for selling it for 1$, tariffed at 2$ when other cars are sold 50k+$... they'll achieve their goal of economic destruction of the west... unless there is a ban on weaponized goods exported by CCP Land, KGB Land and other terrorist lands and affiliates, which amounts to all goods not in a properly secure sourcing and manufacturing process.

For a very old guy like me (82) when I think tugboat captain I think of Tugboat Annie (Marie Dressler) and Wallace Beery her husband Terry in the "Tugboat Annie" movies. A favorite of mine as a kid in the 1950's. Television was a new thing and had mostly old movie reruns, most of them old 1930;s and 40's black and white which was fine as TV was all black and white in those days. I'm an old dude, party line phones, B&W TV only 3 stations. Big deal when we finally got a single line Dial your own number phone. Oh, yeah, and a refrigerator that did not have to have Ice delivered every few days. The wonder drugs were Mercurochrome, Vaseline, and Band-Aid's for anything below a bone poling through the skin. We were tough in those days, ridiculed if you were the last kid on the block to break at least an arm or leg. The "Good old Days?" Things are not the same. From my point of view from those days this is an alien civilization I'm living in now.

To me - it is amazing that in rough seas - more containers are not lost. I know they have systems in place to prevent them from tumbling off, but I can't square that up with what I see when looking at the rear of the ship.

Thanks a bunch Sal, you do outstanding work! Knowledge, research and presentation like few others! So good that you are pushing hard for recognition of "Matters Maritime" (and M.N. Mariners) on the world stage (not just in the good old USA!): an under-appreciated group if ever there was one. I graduated from a nautical college many moons ago but was intrigued to watch how they school their merchant mariners in the Philippines! Wow ! There is a u tube on this somewhere and it knocked my socks off to watch it and compare it to my experience! See if you can locate it sometime. You will not be disappointed. Cheers from New Zealand

Everyone, everyone from A to Z, involved in the Dali - Key Bridge salvage operation is to be commended. They've done an enormous and extremely difficult and complicated job at lightning speed with no fatalities or serious injuries so far. Consummate professionals up and down the line. Hats off!!

Those cranes have been reviewed in the last two years because they can monitor more information that we want out there. This has been so interesting that has been currently going on. Thanks for continuing to watch this. ❤

Our product came in through Long Beach (LB), train then via Las Vegas, Utah, Wyoming and then down to Denver. When LB would go on strike our product would come into Tacoma, train across to Chicago, re-train, then through Nebraska to Denver. 😊

On the command structure :: it was good AND fair to put the unified command on public notice that committee blame-shifting as a crap management cover was going to be called out. IF it turns out that unified command is a functional model for these type of cross-jurisdictional emergencies, then maybe we have a study-able template that can be used more widely when needed....
