Joe lived and worked at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station over winter (it was dark 24/7!).
Nelly lived and worked at McMurdo Station on Antarctica over summer (it was light 24/7!)...
....and they've got lots to say about the fun, weird, quirky, unique, isolated, fully dark slash fully light, absolutely freezing life living on Antarctica!

I remember in WW2 they talked about forest marriage. Seen a movie with that reference in it. I think Liev Scriber was in it.

Love this! My Dad spent 30 years with the USAP and made over 30 trips south and still works for Leidos.

Thats awesome. Does your dad go to mcmurdo? What role? Curious if i know him.

@@SavedByGrace1987 He was/is in QA.. started with ASA back in the early 90s, through Raytheon, LM and now Leidos. Technically he retired about 5 years ago but he still does consult stuff. He was through McM, Palmer and South Pole numerous times :-) but he did his last full trip in 07 before my Mom got ill- after that he was office based in Denver.

Thats so cool! Yeah i might not have run into him. My manager is the health and safety and quality manager so he might know your dad! I worked safety at McMurdo this past winter. Was a blast. I had actually talked to a woman that worked quality probably around the late 90s i think she was airforce and her name was jessica i can't recall her last name. The quality folks are usually just there for main body it seems. We didn't have anyone on station last winter.

The chefs that josiah is referring to were executive chefs. I know the one dude and yes i gained 30 lbs last winter from how good that food was. Haha

South pole runs on the honor system with 2 showers per week. then mcmurdo has no limits.

Sheesh really disappointed that out of the 150+ comments I read through and the top comment that there would be answers and the fact that these two people obviously had more to say in their responses to the questions that you only posted 6 minutes of what they actually had to say. I almost feel cheated but then again this is KZfaq so thanks for what you did share✨
